I can't stand to cry, I'm not a sissy
I'm just out to find the stronger part of me

"Gah!"

Inuyasha growled as he was thrown back through the air and landed with a sickening crash onto the ground. He sat up, ignoring the pain that the wound on his stomach was probably causing him, and glared at the rat youkai that dared to challenge him.

Giving a mighty snarl, Inuyasha pushed himself up and continued the fight.

I'm more than a man, less than a youkai
Like to punch my enemies right in their eye
But it's not easy to be me

The rat youkai snickered as the dog demon swiped a clawed hand at him, only to have it miss.

"Sssstupid hanyou! You, a dirty little half-breed, ssssshould know better than to challenge a great youkai like me!" it boasted, its beady little eyes watching Inuyasha carefully. Inuyasha snarled angrily and leapt at the rat youkai with a speed born of anger, driving a fist through the eyes that were still watching him.

Inuyasha stood there, watching the youkai squirm with a grim expression on his face. "Kagome, look for the shard," he said in a tone that seemed to demand respect and obedience. Kagome watched him with a dazed expression, before scrambling to her feet and pointing out the shard embedded in the youkai.

Wish that I could fly
Better than being 'half-breed'
Find a way to lie about parents I'll never see

"Otou-san! Come here!"

"Hurry up, okaa-san!"

"Yuki-chan! Keitaro-chan! Slow down!"

Inuyasha watched the happy family in the field. The little boy and girl were running around, playing a chasing game with their father while their mother watched on. His golden eyes flicker slightly, a hint of emotion managing to get past the hard barrier he had set up around himself.

It may sound real sad, but don't be naïve
Even hanyous face reality

Inuyasha would never admit it to anyone, but sometimes he would wish that he had memories like these. All the memories he had of his parents weren't very clear. He could remember his mother - her long, dark hair, her shining purple eyes, the elegant kimonos she would always wear and her warm arms enveloping him in a tight embrace.

His father was even blurrier to him. In the far recesses of his mind, he could vaguely remember a tall figure that looked somewhat like Sesshoumaru, but with much more warmth. But other than this one very vague memory of his father saying something to him, that was basically it.

He remembered his mother telling him that his father was a kind, gentle soul who was devoted to protecting and loving both him and her. He had died protecting them from the humans that disapproved of their relationship shortly after he was born. There was always a great sadness in her eyes everytime she talked about him...

I may be stubborn, but won't you concede?
Even hanyous have the right to weep
And it's not easy to be me

Inuyasha shook his head to rid himself of the memories that had suddenly resurfaced. Looking over at the family one more time, Inuyasha snorted and leapt off, never once turning back.

Run, run, far away, away from me
Well, it's alright
You can all sleep sound tonight
I'm not youkai, or anything

"Youkai! Youkai!"

"Save the children!"

"Run for your lives!"

"Oi! Get back here, ya stinking humans!" Inuyasha snarled, one hand poised at the Tetsusaiga. The group had just entered the village as a rest stop on their way to slay yet another youkai that possessed one of the Shikon shards. The villagers had welcomed them quite warmly upon seeing Miroku, Sango and Kagome. Even a few of the villagers smiled happily at Shippou and Kirara.

But one look at Inuyasha and the whole village was thrown into chaos.

Inuyasha growled angrily. The stupid humans had fled upon seeing him. His youkai half had immediately wanted to rip these mortals apart for the foolishness. Pathetic things were scared too easily. But his human half had felt ... hurt. Hurt that these people would run away just because he had youkai blood in him.

Kagome noticed her hanyou companion's obvious anger. But there was another emotion flickering in his amber eyes. Sadness? The girl blinked in confusion. It was extremely rare for the hanyou to show his emotions like this.

Inuyasha started at the feeling of strange warmth covering the hand that rested on the Tetsusaiga's hilt. He turned to see a small, pale hand covering his clawed one, recognizing whom it belonged to immediately. Inuyasha looked up at Kagome, who was smiling gently at him.

He frowned slightly, shook his head and gave Kagome a rare, small smile before turning back to the humans, who were warily coming back at the insistence of Miroku and Sango. At least Kagome wasn't scared of him ...

I can't stand to cry, I'm not a sissy
Men weren't meant to fight their half-brothers, you see

"Inuyasha!"

Kagome's scream sounded through the clearing, as Inuyasha was slammed into a tree by the force of Sesshoumaru's poison whip. Blinking the blood out of his eyes, he turned to gaze up at Sesshoumaru bemusedly.

His half-brother glared stoically at him before turning on his heel, calling for that human girl that followed him around, the two-headed dragon and his toad-like minion. Inuyasha regained his senses and glared at Sesshoumaru's back, before Kagome came rushing up to him, asking if he was alright.

I'm only a man in a red haori
Looking for Shikon shards in Musashi
Only a man in a red haori
Looking for special things inside of me

Inuyasha sat on the banks of a river. It was already dark, but the hanyou's sensitive eyesight helped him to see clearly.

The hanyou looked at his reflection in the water, sparkling in the moonlight. A young man with long silver hair, piercing amber eyes and furry dog-ears stared back up at him. Inuyasha's expression turned sad as he remembered when he was still a young pup.

His mother was a lady, and a very beautiful one at that. A warlord's daughter raised the way proper ladies should have been raised. But because she had fallen in love with a taiyoukai, only this title saved her from being cast out of the palace along with that half-breed son of hers.

Inuyasha closed his eyes, remembering the taunts of the other courtiers about his appearance and his 'dirty blood'. His mother always stood up for him, but the pain was still there.

Inside of me, inside of me
Yeah, inside of me, inside of me

Inuyasha snarled again, opening his eyes again and splashing the water angrily. His reflection faded as the ripples spread out across the water.

Inuyasha growled lowly, still glaring menacingly at his reflection, which had appeared again. But as his anger faded, Inuyasha felt the pain slowly come back to him. His dog-ears drooped sadly as he stared back into the water. His reflection was now that of a broken man, one that had lost all the things important in his life.

"Inuyasha?"

The hanyou whipped his head around, ready to fight, but relaxed as soon as he saw the raven-haired girl staring curiously back at him. "Whaddya want, wench?" Inuyasha grumbled, his stubborn facade returning as he crossed his arms huffily and pretended not to care.

Kagome frowned back at him. "Well, I just wanted a drink from the river, and you were making such a racket, splashing all that water around," she replied, crossing her own arms over her chest. "Keh!" Inuyasha just snorted, still pretending not to notice the girl as she walked over to sit next to him.

I'm only a man in a red haori
Only a man who’s ex is a zombie

After a few moments of sitting in comfortable silence, Inuyasha opened one eye to look at the girl sitting next to him.

Kagome Higurashi. The 'reincarnation' of his old lover, Kikyo, who walked the earth once more, resurrected with a body of clay and bones.

Kagome and Kikyo. The two were quite alike, but also very different. Both were quite beautiful, but each in their own special way. Kikyo was more of a serene beauty, kind to people, her aura ever calm, her pale face always schooled into a peaceful expression, while Kagome was ... Kagome.

Inuyasha didn't know how to describe Kagome. She was a fiery girl, always standing up for what she believed was right, but kind and caring at the same time, always taking care of her friends and even complete strangers, regardless how 'dangerous' other people seemed to say they were. She always seemed to find good in everyone, even in that 'Jinenji' guy that they had met up with a few months back.

She was a unique little thing, like those 'pah-zels' that she brought for Shippou. She wasn't one of those people who you could figure out just by glancing at them. Kagome was a person that needed time for you to figure out. Even Inuyasha, who had spent the longest time with her compared to the others in their little group, still hadn't completely worked her out.

Both Kikyo and Kagome were special to Inuyasha, each of them holding a part of his heart. But for some reason, Inuyasha felt differently about Kagome. Even though he had promised to protect Kikyo from Naraku, he always felt like he had to take care of this strange girl from the future.

This had always confused Inuyasha. He didn't like being confused. So Inuyasha had turned to pushing Kagome away, always arguing with her and fighting over silly things, just to tamp the confusion down. But he had always taken care of her, always putting her ahead of him in everything that he did, just to make sure she was happy.

Kagome turned to Inuyasha and caught him looking at her. "What is it, Inuyasha?" she asked innocently, cocking her head to the side. Inuyasha snapped out of his momentary daze and resumed his grumpy facade. "Keh! There's nothing wrong with me, wench!" he snorted.

Kagome just smiled good-naturedly at him, used to the hanyou's irritability. Inuyasha relaxed a little, until he was comfortable enough to sit next to her without crossing his arms or acting grouchy.

I'm only a man in a red haori
And it's not easy ... ooh

Inuyasha then turned to Kagome. "Oi, wench, you'd better get some sleep, otherwise I'll have to lug you around tomorrow," he told her gently. Kagome turned to look at him pleadingly. "Aw, come on, Inuyasha! Just a few more minutes?" she cajoled.

It's not easy ... to be ... me ...

Inuyasha shook his head, but smiled softly.

"Okay, just a few more minutes ..."
