2) Rebirth
Fifty years have passed since Kikyo's death, yet she walked the lands of Feudal Japan once again as she had been brought back to the grave and part of her soul placed inside a body crafted from her ashes and a generous amount of clay. Now, alone save for her Soul Stealers, she wandered the land as she collected numerous souls just to keep herself alive. Kikyo snorted as this crossed her mind.
'If one can call this living,' she thought as she stopped in her tracks and her Soul Stealers did the same. She then looked down at the ground and closed her eyes as she breathed a heavy sigh that made the Soul Stealers thrill as some of them nuzzled up against her out of worry. Kikyo looked at them and smiled softly as she petted a couple with both her hands. Once her pets had been soothed, she moved her hands so as she could look at them. She stared silently at the open palms before she slowly open and closed her hands a couple times.
'This body...it is mine...and yet, it is not,' Kikyo thought as she pulled back the sleve of her right arm with her leg arm. As she pulled back the white fabric, she revealed a human elbow but when she flexed her arm a couple times there came a faint clicking noise that was characteristic of a hinge. For you see, though the woman's craftmanship of her Soul Doll's was extrodinary, there was still the fact that she could never replicate a convincing set of human elbows and knnes, so they would always end up being hinged like on a puppet. The woman actually preferred this for many reasons, but the reason above all else was that it reminded her that she wasn't a goddess and merely God's tool. So, she never perfected her skills beyond that and put all her love into each Soul Doll that she crafted.
Now, when a Soul Doll finds love right way, it becomes a real person right way. But, when a Soul Doll slowly falls in love, it slowly becomes a real person. This is the case of Kikyo as her love for Inuyasha blossomed, her slowly transformed from that of a Soul Doll to that a human. When she died, so she was close to being human that her knees and elbows had fused togther but the hinges were still there under the flesh. Yet when Kikyo was brought back, one would think that she'd have a false human body. But, since part of this body was crafted from her ashes, she regained the body she once had. It was like being thrown from one shell to another, and the worst part was that she couldn't for the life of her remember what it had been to be that girl...to be Kagome...to be...truly alive...
Kikyo's thoughts though were interrupted by a sudden noise. Kikyo looked and was surprised to see the very person she had been thinking about. Kagome walked through the forest at a brisk pace as she kept her left arm down at her side with her hand in a fist as she carried a basket full of bath supplies in her cocked right arm. Kikyo watched her for a moment and knew that the young woman was in a foul mood, most likely from having gotten into another one of her famous arguments with Inuyasha. Normally, she would have let the girl alone and gone about her own way. But tonight was different as her feet seemed to move of their own accord and she began to follow Kagome through the woods as she kept a healthy distance, one that kept her far enough away yet she wouldn't loose sight of her prey.
Before long, Kikyo came to the end of her journey as she came across a clearing with a fairly large hot springs in the middle of it. There, she found the young woman already undressed as she stepped into the warm waters and let out a sigh of relief as the warmth spread fast through her body. Kikyo stood there in the shadows for a moment there, as she watched Kagome sit and relax in the water before she reached over and grabbed something from the basket to wash herself with. Kikyo wondered what she was using and frowned as her brain failed the yield the information she desired. So, this left her with one of many options...and she decided to make the most passive of all of them. She gave a silent signal to her Soul Stealers to stay amongst the trees and she herself stepped out into the clearing. She probably would have made it all the way to the spring itself undetected if it hadn't been for the fact for one tiny twig on the ground that her foot found and snapped as her weight came down upon it. At the sound of the snapping, Kikyo stopped in her tracks as Kagome let out an audible gasp as she ducked down to cover herself and whirled around to see who it was at the same time.
"Kikyo!?" Kagome gasped, surprised as all nine Hells to see the reborn Miko less than five feet away from the very spring she herself was bathing in.
"I do not wish to harm you, I merely wish to join you," Kikyo stated in her usual cool and collective voice. A look of surprise painted itself upon Kagome's face and she was caught in a moment of mental debate before she finally made a decision.
"Ok then," Kagome said as she forced herself to relax and sat back up in the water. Kikyo smiled at this small truce and began the task of removing each article of clothing and folding them up neatly before she placed them on the ground by Kagome's strange cloths from the future. As she did so though, she took a moment to look at the green and white outfit from the future. Even being this close to the garments brought back no memories of her second life and it quietly anguished her. She pushed this anguish aside though and resumed the mask of serenity as she slowly slipped into the spring waters. Once in the waters, she sat down and let out a similar sigh to Kagome's as she enjoyed the warmth of the waters. At the same time, Kagome couldn't to noticed and smiled quietly as she scrubbed her head with shampoo.
"Tell me," Kikyo said as she distracted Kagome from this scrubbing and she looked at the woman she once was, "What is that substance you are using?"
"Shampoo, it's used to clean hair," Kagome explained.
"I see...is it all right if I use some?" Kikyo asked.
"Sure, why not? Hold out your hand," Kagome said. Kikyo nodded and held out her left hand. As she did so, Kagome leaned over and poured some of the Shampoo into the Miko's palm. Once Kagome had given her the Shampoo, Kikyo looked at the small blob of pink gel in her hand. As she felt it, it felt cool. As she sniffed it, it smelled like flowers. As she rubbed it between her hands, it felt slick. As she rubbed it through her hair as she saw Kagome do, it transformed into bubbles. Yet as she did all of these things, it brought back no memories for her and she let out a small sad sigh.
"Something wrong?" Kagome asked as she turned to the Miko at the sound of the small sigh. Kikyo looked up at the young and was mildly surprised to see concern on the young woman's face. Even so, some small part of her told her that this was a characteristic of Kagome's and Kikyo smiled softly at this small piece of information.
"I envy you," Kikyo finally said after a moment's silence and Kagome's concern was washed away by a sudden wave of surprise.
"You do?" Kagome asked and Kikyo nodded in the positive towards this question.
"Why?"
"For many reason, such as you are loved and hold many friends close to you...also the fact that you are human," Kikyo explained as the shampoo sat on her head and slowly began to fall down her scalp and began to come dangerously close to her eyes.
"Kikyo," Kagome gasped as she noticed and quickly jumped up. Kikyo gasped in surprise and started to move back as her reincarnation came towards her. Yet she was surprised when the girl did nothing more than wipe her hand across her forehead.
"You have to be careful, you can let this touch your eyes or else it will burn them," Kagome explained like a mother to a child as she rinsed the foam off her hand in the water. Kikyo recovered from her surprise as a wave of sadness washed over her.
"Kikyo?" Kagome asked as she looked at the Miko filled with a mixture of surprise and concern.
"Kagome, I'm...not like you..." Kikyo said.
"I know, you..." Kagome began.
"<b>DON'T</b> say that you know!" Kikyo snapped angrily and Kagome jumped out of fright.
"I'm more than just clay and ashes brought to life. I'm a Soul Doll," Kikyo confessed passionately.
"A what?"
"A Soul Doll. It is a life-sized puppet brought to life when a soul is placed inside its shell. If it finds love, it can become human. It is neglected and abused, then it will die of sorrow and a broken heart," Kikyo explained. Kagome wasn't sure what to think about what Kikyo had just told her. With all the things she had been through already, she shouldn't be surprised by this new piece of information. Finally, Kikyo lost her patience and lunged forward to claim her reincarnation's right hand. Kagome gasped at the sudden movements as her arm was yanked and her hand placed upon Kikyo's left elbow. Kikyo flexed her arm and as she did so, Kagome's jaw dropped as she felt not the gliding motions of a joint but the clicking motion of a puppet's hinge. Kikyo flexed her arm a couple more times before she finally stopped and released Kagome's hand. As she sat back down in the water, a sad look painted itself upon her face as she stared at the steamy waters.
"Before I died, I was <i>so</i> close to becoming. Now, I'm right back where I was and I'm stuck like this," Kikyo said sadly.
"Are you sure?" Kagome asked, some small hope evident in her voice.
Kikyo nodded, "I crossed paths with my maker and she's unsure if I can progress any further than this," Kikyo said as another tear rolled down her face. Kagome saw this tear and she felt her own heart panged by sadness. After a moment's silence though, Kikyo looked back up at Kagome.
"Now you see why I envy you. You're what I always wanted to be and what I'll never get to be...but most of all. I envy you because you have Inuyasha," Kikyo said sadly.
"But...he loves you," Kagome said as the very words she spoke pained her heart.
"He loves you as well, I've seen it in his eyes. Because of that, he's torn between the two of us," Kikyo said.
