Chapter Six

"She's been like that all week."

"You mean she hasn't eaten anything?"

"Nothing. She just sits there and stares at the window."

"How long has it been since she spoke?"

"Not a word since she blacked out. When she came to she said 'Inuyasha' and that was it."

"We need to get her to eat something. It's been a week! Her family will need to be notified if this keeps on."

Kagome showed no sign that she had heard the conversation so obviously about her. Sango and the headmaster were standing at the door studying her. She kept her eyes trained on the window. She could feel tears prickling her eyes, distorting her vision. She let them come. Felt them slide down her cheeks as she gazed at the sunset. It always suprised her. The tears. They would dissapear all day, but at sunset they always returned. The darkness enveloped her, reminding her of the one night she had with him. Inuyasha.

Her walkman blasted music through the speakers that lay at her side. One song played over and over. Inuyasha's favorite song.

Your words to me: just a whisper
Your face is so unclear
I triy to pay attention
Your words just dissapear

She tried not to think about it. Tried not to think about that night. Tried not to think about that one precious time they had shared. She tried to forget the years she had known him, never knowing how he truly felt about her. Tried to forget about the moments she would live through without him.

Cuz it's always raining in my head
Forget all the things I should have said

The tears kept coming, long after the suns last rays touched the earth. Long after she was left alone with her thoughts. All the things, all the moments they had shared. She pulled them all close to her heart, telling herself that she would remember him.

So I speak to you in riddles
Cuz my words get in my way
I spoke the whole thing to my head
I feel it wash away

She remembered when she had first met him. He had tried to tell her his name and had ended up messing up everything he said, turning his words into a jumbled mess. She had smiled at him and handed him a cookie from her lunch. After that they had been the best of friends. Years later he still had trouble saying what he meant, but somehow she had always known.

Cuz I can't take anymore of this
I wanna come apart
I'll dig myself a little hole
Inside your precious heart

Tears dripped from her chin as she listened in anguish to the song. He was always listening to this song, always singing along to the heartwrenching words. The beat pounded in her head as she cried out in her mind. 'Why Inuyasha? Did you somehow know? How could you? You never knew that I would be listening to this. Never knew that you would die, my heart crying out to yours. Why aren't I with you? Why can't I be with you? Just when we found each other. Why did you leave me behind my love...'

Cuz it's always raining in my head
Forget all the things I should have said

The wind slid through the open window, blasting the hair from the silent womans face. She didn't move. Her pain so deep that outwardly she knew nothing.

I am nothing more than
A little boy inside
That cries out for attention
Yet I always try to hide

Her thoughts tortured her. 'You were so much more. Why did you have to die? I need you! I've always needed you! My life is worthless without you here beside me. Why have you hidden from me? Why have you not come for me? I want to see your face. I want to feel your skin against mine. I want to hold you close. I want to listen to the steady beat of your heart.'

Cuz it's always raining in my head
Forget all the things I should have said

The moon slowly rose into the darkened sky. She watched, but didn't see. Rain splattered against the glass above the open window. It soaked through the red shirt and black boxers of the lone woman sitting on the bed. The rain intermingled with her tears, bleeding down her cold face. She sat under the window wishing for the impossible. Hoping that her hanyou would climb through it and tell her everything had just been a bad dream. A reality she needn't face. She never turned, never moved to look behind her, oblivious to the tall man that stood in her doorway.

Sesshomaru watched the woman on the bed. Her back was straight, her chin raised as she watched the moon through the open window. He recognised her from his brothers childhood. When they were younger the two had been inseperable. He had tried to ignore it, knowing what it meant. His hanyou brother was more like their father than he was aware. Choosing a human for a mate even as early as he had. Inuyasha may not have realised it but Sesshomaru did.

Coming here to gather his brothers belongings, he had been told to ask Kagome about what was Inuyasha's and what was Kouga's. When he walked to her room he had known before he ever entered, the remorse, the deep pain, radiating from the small woman. Her tears were evident in the air. Her scent held traces of Inuyasha's and something Sesshomaru recognised immediately. The wind whipped her hair up, exposing her neck. He wondered absently if she knew she had the silvery mark of his brother etched at the base of her neck. He stood silently for a moment longer before walking quietly into the room. The girl showed no signs of acknowledging his presence. Her attention was solely on the window and what lay beyond.

He sat beside her and spoke in the same even tone he used with children. "Kagome. You were Inuyasha's mate. You need to eat and grow. His child will not live without nourishment." The woman stiffened then slowly turned to face him. Her hair moved into her eyes, shifting again until all he saw were the dark glossy orbs set in pale skin. She didn't speak. Didn't move. He had to admit to himself that he had never seen grief so deep. Her pain was a burning thing. Something that touched and engulfed you, simply by looking into her eyes. She nodded and turned back to the window. Intercepting the sick look on her face he lifted her frail body and strode towards the bathrooms he had been directed to earlier. People were giving them odd looks. One male in paticular looked ready to kill. The human glared daggers into his back as he brushed past them.

Sesshomaru sat her beside a toilet then went and got a wet paper towel to press to her forehead and the back of her neck. Pregnancies were hard on youkai females. The fact that this female was human and had to deal with the grief of losing her mate also, didn't set well with the Inu no Taisho. He knew what he had to do. He didn't have to like it though. He kept his face bored as he brought the wet towels and placed them on her cold skin. Inwardly he was cringing. Her tears had stopped but her stomach seemed to be revolting. She groaned as her stomach tried to heave with nothing in it. The tall youkai lord picked her up again and went back to her room. Two couples followed him, all smelled slightly like his brother. He assumed that they were his friends.

Once he had layed the now sleeping young woman down he shut the open window, closing out the wind and rain. She whimpered slightly but otherwise kept silent. He turned to the group and directed his bored look to the females. One was a full youkai while the other seemed completely human. "I need to finish my business with the school board. Kagome needs to be fed regularly until I get back. I don't care what she eats as long as she eats. Understood?" Both of the girls nodded. Seemingly satisfied he looked at the monk and wolf, recognizing the wolf as an alpha male of his tribe. "You. Watch her. Do not leave her alone at any time. Lesser youkai will probably try to attack her in hopes of killing the pup. I will not have it." A grunt was his only answer as he dissapeared into the hall.

The group crowded around her bed and watched her sleep. All of them had understood what he hadn't said. Kagome carried Inuyasha's child. And if Sesshomaru never mated then the child would be next in line as the heir of the Inu no Taisho title, hayou or not.

Kouga grimaced as he looked down at the huge clothing covering her tiny frame. The choice of clothing was not lost on him. Inuyasha's old clothes. She had surrounded herself with as much of him as possible. She loved him so much, so deeply. It pained him to think of what he would do if he lost Ayame. He shuddered when he thought of how Ayame would take it if he died. He looked up at her from his knelt position beside the bed. Ayame looked down at Kagome. Her eyes shifted to Kougas and held. A silent understanding went between them. Both understood the pain she was feeling. They knew what would happen if one lost the other. In either scenario it would be devastating.

They watched over her all that night and part of the next day before they saw Sesshomaru. Kagome was sitting up eating ramen when he entered. Kouga growled and stood until he sensed who it was. His defenses went down as the youkai lord stepped over to the now conscious woman. Styrofoam cups were littered on the floor. Sango handed the cup to him as Kagome dished huge mouthfuls out. She looked at him but still didn't say anything. He resisted the urge to tell her to slow down. He looked over at the others but they simply shrugged.

"How many of these have you eaten?" Her eyes narrowed. She didn't answer, instead she dished out another huge mouthful and stuffed herself with it. He wanted to growl in frustration. Humans were so stubborn sometimes. Especially this one. "You need to eat something other than Ramen. Something healthy perhaps?" His sarcasm was not lost on her. She pulled the cup from his hands and downed the broth before grabbing another off the floor. He found it interesting that it had already been fixed to eat. Once again he turned to the group behind them. One lifted brow was all it took to get Sango talking. "She's now on her fifth cup. It's the only thing she can eat without throwing it up."

Sesshomaru snorted. Something that was very unusual for him. He noticed that the woman had stopped eating to stare at him. When he glanced her way he saw the tears welling in her eyes. They threatened to overspill but she blinked and they dissapeared. He guessed correctly that snorting like he had was something his baka brother had done. That was something he would have to watch out for. Family mannerisms were going to have to be montiored. He tapped her cup as her eyes glazed over. She snapped out of her daze and started to eat again. Never saying a word.
