Chapter 36
Inuyasha and Shippo stood on the balcony railing ready to jump; Inuyasha smirked at the sight. He was grateful that he didn't have to carry Hiten. “Make sure you hold him tight,” he snickered, hearing Shippo growling.
Inuyasha was the first to leap, Shippo followed closely behind. Once safe on the ground Shippo placed Hiten down. They were in the back parking lot of the building and quickly hid themselves behind a car, incase Naraku had his minions spying on them. “Come on, we're wasting valuable time.” Inuyasha said in his normally gruff voice. He felt uneasy, something was defiantly wrong however, he couldn't pinpoint where, or why he had this feeling. It reminded him back on the island with Kagome and the storm, then the murder of his parents. It was the same foreboding feeling.
Inuyasha stopped. His ears attuned to the loud noises that surrounded him. All he could hear were people, cars, and the soothing sounds of the ocean. Hence, he shrugged off the ominous feeling. He lifted up the luggage as they headed west.
A thunderous roar ripped through the surrounding area. Inuyasha's hair suddenly stood on end, when he could see the building rupture. “Run!” He flattened his ears as he screamed, but his warning cry was too late, as debris flew around them.
The explosion was quick and devastated the surrounding areas. Red brick and other particles of the building imploded, as debris flew in the air like a rupturing volcano. The intensity of the blast sent the trio hitting the pavement hard, while glass, which shattered from the surrounding cars, was scattered around them. What remained of the building collapsed, causing a hot thick cloud of black smoke that consumed the surrounding area.
Inuyasha moaned as he came to after the initial shock. He was lying under a slab of drywall, and crawled out from underneath it.
Standing up, thankful he came out unscathed; he suddenly and frantically looked around for his friends. He needed to find them, before they would suffocate. He scanned the area but he could not see anything. The grayish cloud was thick and the area grew dark. The ash burned his eyes and lungs; he coughed trying desperately to breathe. “Shippo…?” he called out gasping, desperation lingering in his voice.
Shippo shook his head as the white ash fell from his red hair. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, also his ears were ringing, and surprised the blast didn't cause him to become deaf. He glanced around as he scooted next to Hiten whom was rendered unconscious, with the thick cloud of smoke in the air rendered his visibility. He tried to sniff the air, but all he could smell was the suffocating smoke and a small amount of blood. Thankfully, Hiten was close by, and he could feel his limp form. Picking him up he managed to find Inuyasha, as he clumsily stumbled over the rubble.
Inuyasha found the suitcase covered with dust. He frowned when the handle had been damaged. “Shit,” he cursed aloud. He contemplated on leaving the damn thing, and finding his friend who was more important. He cursed again, as he picked it up. Then he searched for Shippo.
Inuyasha heard something not to far from him, and quickly headed in that direction. Inuyasha smiled, as Shippo emerged from the cloud cover.
“Thank god you're okay! Are you hurt?” Inuyasha asked. Shippo shook his head `no'. “Good! Let's get the hell out of here!”
It seemed like they've been running for a good ten minutes.
They both visibly sighed when there was a clearing. “Shit, that cloud must be a least a mile wide.” Shippo coughed violently as he tried desperately getting the burning sensation out of his lungs.
Inuyasha placed the luggage down, and then glanced over at Shippo, noticing that Hiten wasn't moving. “How's Hiten?” he asked, shaking the debris and other remains off himself. He didn't want to think of what the ash consisted of.
Shippo laid Hiten down on the ground softly. “He'll survive, he's unconscious. He suffered a deep gash to his forehead.”
Inuyasha snarled baring his fangs as he wiped his face off. “That Bastard…! Wait until I get my hands on that scrawny flea-bag of a wolf!” he snarled. He immediately thought about Kagome and frowned. `If she saw or heard the explosion then she must think I'm dead.' He growled loudly at the thought, while he caught the curious glances from Shippo.

Sesshomaru closed his eyes, concentrating. He took in deep shallow breaths, only to confirm his suspicions were correct. Inuyasha was still alive, which pleased him a great deal. Unfortunately, he couldn't tell anyone, and badly wanted to let Kagome know. It killed him to see her in such anguish.
Kagome stared into the passing jungle. Tears falling freely from her face, due to her hysterics. She couldn't believe that Inuyasha was gone. However, she wasn't certain. She glanced over at Sesshomaru. His visage was unreadable, and yet his posture felt calmer than his expression. Did he know something that she didn't. A rush of hope entered into her heart. She wanted to ask, but she remained silent. Instead, she would observe him further.
Koga gripped his hands tightly on the wheel. He glanced in his rear view mirror staring at the broken women in the backseat. He smirked with satisfaction. He had hated Inuyasha since the airport in Miami. He felt no remorse for his actions and kept glancing in his rear view mirror. “He wasn't any good for you anyway.” He chuckled, “besides you are much better off with Naraku. And maybe when he's done with you, then I'll be aloud to have a turn!”
Kagome cringed hearing that disgusting thing before her. However, she didn't expect Sesshomaru to intervene.
Sesshomaru turned and glared angrily at the wolf. “If it wasn't for Rin, I would've enjoyed killing you slowly and taken great pleasure tasting your blood on my claws.”
Koga laughed, “All over that whore sitting in the backseat!? Come on…like I'd let you ever touch me.”
Kagome began to feel a rise in her temper, and started to growl, “How dare you!” Flying forward in her seat, her right hand formed into a fist, and then let lose on his face. “How dare you talk to me like that…?”
Koga's eyes narrowed when he felt the first punch. He gripped the steering wheel tightly, trying not to lose control of the vehicle. He growled loudly, hoping that she would stop her tyrant. However, she didn't and the more she hit him, the volatile he became. No woman under any exception would feel a promising punishment if they hit him. Kagome was soon to be no exception even though he would have to explain to an angered boss. Therefore, he just continued to snarl.
Sesshomaru knew what Koga's growl meant and he unbuckled his seat belt and crawled into the backseat, grabbing a Kagome during the process.
“What the fuck?” Koga turned his head staring at the defiant demon. He was supposed to be the one in control. Yet, he knew that he was no match for Sesshomaru, so, he bluffed and snarled loudly. “Get your ass back up here!”
Sesshomaru smirked, “I am just doing what you asked me to do earlier. Don't you remember? `Keep her under control.' Now how do you expect me to control her when I'm sitting up front?” He answered logically.
“You can do that up front!” Koga yelled. “Besides, if she pulls another stunt like that again. I'll just simply call my boss.”
“You won't make it to the phone.” Sesshomaru growled leaving Koga with a challenge. Sesshomaru wrapped an arm protectively over Kagome and pulled her closer to his embrace. He could feel the warmth of her tears on his chest. God he hated that he had to be dishonest with her. He knew the consequences though, if they found out the truth.

Hiten began to rouse, “What the hell happened? I feel like shit.” Hiten put his hand where he felt the most pain and that was on his forehead. He heard a slight growl and Shippo shoved Hiten's hand away.
“You took a nasty fall and hit your head on the concrete. You'll survive.” Shippo said. “But you do have a nasty gash and I'm trying to fix you up, and I don't need extra hands in the way, man. I think I can manage on my own.”
Hiten pushed the fox away, and tried to stand. However, his head was killing him and he felt dizzy. “How?” he asked drowsily. “I don't remember shit!”
Inuyasha approached him, “Rest…just tell me where your damn plane is?” He was growing restless and didn't have time to stand around doing nothing. He was on a mission, and Naraku and Koga were his targets.
Shippo ignored Inuyasha and answered Hiten, “The building exploded and we barely made it out alive.”
Hiten groaned, his body ached and his lungs burned. He closed his eyes. “Naraku did this….” He could feel the dry cloth pressed against his head and cringed with pain. “He's making sure that we're out of the way….so there'll be no complications. Damn! Did he have to go through such an enormous extent to get there though?” he remarked snidely, and tried to stand up again. “Inuyasha, after this stunt, I'm positive he'll betray Sesshomaru and Rin as well.”
Inuyasha snarled, “Shippo carry Hiten. Let's go!”

The road had ended and now they had to hike the up to the falls. Naraku stepped out of the vehicle, listening to the noises of the animals that surrounded him. He bent down, and looked at Rin, “get on,” he ordered. Pleased that she obliged and got on his back, with one hand tightly around her leg, he dug through his pockets and pulled out his satellite phone. He then dialed Koga's number as he began to race the steep slopes of the mountain, leaving the forest behind them, his men would have to catch up later. Naraku smirked, `soon Kagome….'

Koga smirked as he read his caller id. “Hello…?” he answered confidently.
“Is it done?” Naraku asked, clenching his hands tightly around the phone.
“Yea,” Koga replied, “you won't have to worry about dog shit anymore. None of them knew what hit them.”
`Inuyasha was dead.' Kagome flinched not only hearing the conversation, but she could also feel her heart splitting even more. The pain was unbearable, and she began to cry silently. She turned her head and just stared at the scenery, trying to tune out the conversation. She couldn't bare to hear anything else about his death. However, a firm hand grabbed her hand tightly squeezing it. She turned and looked at Sesshomaru. Her eyes opened wide with delight conveying the silent conversation. Inuyasha was indeed alive. There was hope.
“Good. Put Kagome on the phone.” Naraku demanded.
Koga glanced in the mirror and reached back to hand the phone to Kagome. He smiled, `so, that's her name.' he thought with recognition. “Here Kagome,” he smirked, “my boss would like a word with you.”
Kagome again felt Sesshomaru squeeze her hand this time she didn't look to know that was a warning. She was supposed to be acting like she had just lost the love of her life, and now she had to prove it to Naraku.
“What…?” Kagome answered emotionless. This bastard would pay for toying with her emotions. She felt so much anger inside herself, and wanted to lash out at anything, yet she couldn't, at least not until Rin and Sesshomaru were safely away.
Naraku stopped running, and set Rin down and quickly snatched her wrist. He grinned when he heard her voice on the phone. “Kagome you're upset?” Naraku snickered as he dragged Rin roughly behind him. “I am not sorry for what happened today, actually I am quite delighted. Our acquaintance should be fun…wouldn't you agree?”
“You disgust me!” she remarked callously. She took a deep breath, sounding more like a sigh, when she felt the squeeze again. She listened and became silent.
Naraku chuckled darkly, “This should be interesting indeed.” He hung up the phone and grabbed Rin roughly. “Get on!” he growled. `Something's not right?' He thought. He would have to ponder at it for a while.

Naraku had reached the top of, The Salto Cuquenan falls and chuckled dryly, overlooking the 2000-foot drop. He knew that Bankotsu and the rest of his men would be in position high in the trees. He had this planned out right. He knew to get camouflage, and a simple element as mud to cover their scents. He glanced over at Rin and smirked. “Soon, you'll be able to go home.”
Rin looked away from the evil stare coming from her captor. Instead, she found herself glancing across the river and into the mouth of the forest where her mate would be stepping out.

Sometime had past since Koga turned off a bend in the road and went up a dirt road. The drive was bumpy and Kagome felt her stomach tighten it was an unsettling feeling. She wasn't sure if it was because of the road, or because she was coming face to face with Naraku again.
“This is the end of the road.” Koga said as he stopped the jeep. “Now we walk the rest of the way.”
Kagome didn't have time to register, as the front seat was pushed up and Koga roughly yanking her out of the vehicle. “You bastard!” she hissed.
This time Koga didn't hold back and he slapped her across the face watching her fall onto the road. He knelt down, ignoring the demon's presence behind him. “I would stay where you are at… if I were you!” He turned his head with a sardonic grin and said, “Unless, you want me to inflict more pain upon her?”
Sesshomaru held his head down, controlling his urges to kill the wolf, then go, and find Naraku. However, there was something amiss with the trail they were currently on, and knowing that Kagome was safe against the wolf's wrath. Sesshomaru decided to take advantage of Koga's distraction, to observe their location. He coldly narrowed his eyes as he swept the surrounding treetops. `Naraku, do you think mud would honestly mask a human's scent.' He scoffed at the thought.
“A bitch needs to learn her place,” Koga snarled, and grabbed Kagome by the arm pulling her up. “I thought Inuyasha would have taught you that.”
Kagome glared at him, ignoring the stinging sensation across her face. “Inuyasha isn't like you! You will never amount to him! By no means!”
Koga chuckled, amused by her temper. “No, but I guess you'll never know…. Since your boyfriend is now in pieces.” He let go of her arm. “Hmmm, I wonder Kagome?” he asked puzzled. “I wonder, when they do find him, will they be able to find all his remains?”
Kagomes eyes instantly filled with tears. Frustrated she did her best Inuyasha growl. She was about to retort when she heard a dark humorous laugh coming from Sesshomaru, and it frightened even her. She immediately began to back away from Koga, when he had turned his attention off her.
“What the hell is so funny?” Koga said growling, as he turned and faced his opponent, while extending his claws. He suddenly shivered in fear, when Sesshomaru smirked.
“I was thinking that exact same thing, only it was about you.” Sesshomaru clenched his fist tightly. “I wonder if Naraku would approve, if I sent him up with your remains.”
“I would kill Kagome, before you'd ever lay a finger on me, then you'll personally experience the wrath of my boss.” He smirked, not realizing that Kagome was not behind him. “I know he would have great satisfaction killing your mate before your very eyes.”
Sesshomaru smirked, “I am willing to test out this theory of yours.”
Koga's eyes widened in fear.… `Why is he so confident?' He quickly glanced behind him and Kagome was gone. He realized too late his mistake, as a fist landed him square in the face. Koga knew three things before he became unconscious: `For starters, the punch felt like a brick to the face. Secondly, he would survive, and finally, Naraku would kill him.' He prayed that he was wrong, as he hit the ground, then his eyes closed.
“Let's go…” a baritone voiced called out to her. Kagome emerged from behind a tree nodding her head `yes.'
Kagome stepped over the lifeless demon and grinned. `Sweet dreams…asshole!' Approaching Sesshomaru, she looked up with a sad smile, and then hugged him. Hoping that he could now confirm to her what she hoped she read in his eyes earlier. Her heart raced in her chest, when she asked. “Inuyasha? Is he…?”
Sesshomaru looked over at Koga. He growled in frustration. A part of him said she would be safer to know a lie. “I'm sorry Kagome….”
Kagome began to cry into his shirt. “No! You are wrong…!” and began hitting his chest. “I don't believe you…” she was in hysterics now. “Your eyes…I read it in your eyes!”
Sesshomaru hated the betrayal he was causing, and hoped she would forgive him when she understood the reason, why. Right now, in her state, she would be safe. Naraku would be convinced that Inuyasha had died in the explosion, and would not question her. He hugged her broken frame in his arms as he walked up the hill. “I'm sorry….” He whispered.
Sesshomaru stopped; he walked a good distance and glanced down. Kagome had fallen asleep crying in his arms. “Kagome…” he said nudging her. He needed her awake and alert the scent of humans grew stronger. He felt uneasy, but stayed calm. He continued walking as Kagome stirred from her slumber.
A soft growl vibrated in his chest when she began to speak. In addition, she could feel his arms tighten around her waist. “Can you walk?” he spoke softly. He was pleased when she nodded her head `yes'.
“Good! Stay close to me, and do whatever I say.” Sesshomaru said sternly, he left no room for argument. He continued walking at his leisurely pace, noticing Kagome was falling behind.
By the time, he stopped and waited for her he had already scouted the area, and concluded that this trap was for after Kagome was delivered. He growled with annoyance. As soon as Kagome approached him, she was out of breath and glaring at him. He held in a chuckle and kneeled down next to her. “At this rate, we won't meet Naraku until sundown.”
Kagome huffed at his comment, but complied. Feeling his arms wrap around her legs and in his speed and agility, she was lost in a reminiscing moment when Inuyasha was doing this with her, not so long ago. She frowned, as she rested her head on Sesshomaru's shoulder. A sudden stir pulled Kagome out of her trance. She tried to see but couldn't because of his long hair. They were out of the wood and on a high rocky cliff. She could hear the roaring of water and cringed. However, it suddenly changed when she heard Sesshomaru say his name.
“Naraku!”
