Sunrise

A steady, foreboding beat throbs from the lone drum in the center of the village. I just smirk. Look at them, whispering quietly among themselves, wondering why this child looks so damn confident at his own execution. It's because I am to die at sunrise.

I shouldn't have tried to steal some food during my human night, but I'm ten years old and I was fucking hungry! And don't think they couldn't spare the tiny helping I took. I don't steal from people who don't have enough to feed themselves. There, I already have more honor than these heartless bastard who would rather slay a child than offer him something to eat. It would be a hundred times worse if I was hanyou right now, but then I've never been caught in that form. Not that there haven't been a few close calls…

The drum goes silent.

“Do you have anything to say?” the guy with the sword, my would-be executioner asks me. I just grin maliciously, even wider as a visible chill goes through him. Even now the first tentative shafts of sunlight bathe me in warmth, and I can feel my blood heating.

I hear the sword come down, and stop the descending blade with my hand. Shocked gasps surround me now, turning into cries of fear and outrage as my transformation runs its course. A thin line of blood trickles from my palm, but I don't care. I snap the sword in two, thoroughly enjoying the terror in the man's eyes before I leap up and punch him in the face as hard as I can. He goes flying, and I take the chance to make my escape. I stop for a moment on my way out, to turn their precious drum into kindling.
