A Lesson in Appearances

Inuyasha sat quietly with his eyes closed, arms and legs crossed. Today they had rescued some kid from being devoured by an oni, and it just so happened that the boy's family was the wealthiest in a nearby village. The grateful father offered them a free place to stay for the night and served them sweet-smelling tea in the finest china Inuyasha had ever seen. He wasn't surprised that he didn't get a teacup.

Oh, they gave him a small wooden cup that was nice enough, but the message was loud and clear. They didn't trust him with their prized porcelain. The brutish, unrefined hanyou wouldn't know how to drink from the delicate china, and would probably end up breaking it if he tried. That was what they thought. So Inuyasha determined to ignore them and refuse to partake in the tea at all. He had almost convinced himself he didn't care when a soft clunk caused him to open his eyes.

There before him sat a porcelain teacup, filled almost to the top with Gyokuro.* Twin gasps sounded from their human hosts; husband and wife stared at him with wide, frightened eyes. Kagome was gazing at him expectantly, favoring him with a grin of encouragement. Swallowing, he slowly reached for the teacup. The husband started to protest, but Kagome silenced him with a positively livid glare. They could only stare in shock as the crude hanyou picked up the cup and sipped the contents in a very sophisticated manner before gently setting it back down on the table.

Forcing shut his gaping jaw, the husband motioned to his wife, and the latter rose to fetch a new cup for Kagome. So a hanyou drank tea that evening, and two humans learned that some things are more than they appear.

*Mod-sama says Gyokuro is regarded as the best tea in Japan, a rare and luxurious commodity. Hey, I learned something today!
