Green and Gold

Kagome sighed, breathing deeply of the warm spring air. She was sitting in one of her favorite places, a peaceful meadow buried in the forest near the hut she shared with her husband. But neither the cloudless sky nor the joyous chirping of the birds could chase away her melancholy.

It was about a year ago that she returned to the feudal era for the final time. This world was dominated by green. It was in the grass, the trees, so common that it was nearly impossible to look somewhere without seeing it. Green surrounded her, and occasionally she found it suffocating. She missed the dull colors of brick and tar, the sounds of car horns and hundreds of feet pounding the pavement, and even the faint smell of pollution. The city of her youth was inescapably foreign to the green world in which she now resided.

She heard a faint rustle of feet in the grass, and a warm body appeared next to her. Her husband's arm settled around her shoulders, and she leaned into him wordlessly, accepting his comfort.

“It isn't like your time, is it?” he asked after awhile. She shook her head, blinking back sudden tears. Shifting, Inuyasha brought his hand up to her cheek and gently turned her to face him, though her eyes remained downcast. He placed a tender kiss on her forehead, then leaned his own against it.

“I'm glad you're here,” he said. Finally she raised her eyes, seeing gold shimmering in love and gratitude, and managed a small smile. She was happy here, and despite occasional bouts of homesickness, she loved this green world. And whenever she forgot that, Inuyasha's golden eyes would always be there to remind her.

“Me too,” she replied, leaning in for a sweet kiss.
