Awestruck
The sun is setting, and with every tiny sliver that slips below the horizon I can feel my strength wane. I am running, Kagome on my back, a horde of monsters in hot pursuit. I wish I could turn and fight, but Tetsusaiga will not transform for me, and the youkai are too numerous for my claws.
Finally, the last of the sun vanishes, and my pitiful transformation completes itself. I put Kagome down, turn to face her. I will tell her to run, to leave me behind. Perhaps I can buy her enough time to escape.
And yet, I can't even say the words. That look in her eye…I have never seen such raw determination, such intense, burning resolve. She pushes past me, placing herself between me and our foes. I can only look on dumbfounded; our lives are in her hands now.
How is she doing this? She is unskilled with a bow, but her arrows fly straight and true, her aim perfect each time. Her miko powers are untrained, yet she wields them with incredible vigor, both hands aglow with purity. I cannot take my eyes off her, this warrior goddess. And even though I am a sitting target, she does not let any harm come to me. Twice arrows whiz past my ear, slaying unseen enemies trying to take me unawares.
Finally, it is over. All the youkai are dead, and Kagome stands amid the carnage, breathing heavily. She turns to me and…smiles, the kind that expresses joy at just being alive. I can't help but smile back.
In the morning we will rejoin the others, and perhaps never speak of this night again. But I will never forget the moment where, for the first time in my life, I was truly, truly awestruck.
