Let It Rain

Kagome marched down the sidewalk toward the school, her step resembling that of a confident soldier heading off to a war he thinks will be all triumph and glory.  She was well-studied, and fully prepared to kick this math test’s ass back to wherever it came from.  Her mental umbrella was strong; nothing could dampen her spirits today!

Or so she thought.

The first little wrinkle was when the history teacher sprang a pop quiz on them, about the Meiji Period, no less.  That was in between her two eras of historical ‘expertise,’ modern and feudal.  So she flunked that, but it wouldn’t count for too much so she didn’t let it depress her.

One of the flimsy skeleton ribs snapped, leaving a main rib unsupported, hanging only by the piece of cloth it was attached to.  Minor damage; the umbrella’s structure remained intact.

Next it was slipping and falling in a mud puddle during gym class.  A couple girls at school didn’t like her because, well, because they did like Hojo, and they hated how he was so hung up on her.  And of course, those girls had been right there to laugh, make fun of her, and generally enjoy themselves at wet, soggy Kagome’s expense.

Now the unsupported main rib flapped in the wind, exerting pressure on the adjacent skeleton ribs.  The entire structure began to shake and rattle dangerously.

Then came lunch, where bumping into one of the school jocks who wasn’t watching where he was going resulted in her meal being deposited on the floor.  Not particularly feeling like floor bento, and not having any money to purchase lunch, Kagome went hungry.

Now the wind began to pummel the un-aerodynamic umbrella, twisting and pressuring until it was only half functional.

Finally, it was time for her math test.  She looked at the first problem…and laid her head on the desk.  Why did it look like Swahili?  She had studied all night, hadn’t she?  Oh, that’s right.  The class had fallen behind the syllabus, so this test was on material she hadn’t studied for.  The stuff she crammed in her brain all night wasn’t going to be tested for another month.  Kagome somehow forced herself to make an attempt, barely able to read the questions with eyes blurred by frustrated, unshed tears.

The wind gusted one final time, snapping the umbrella inside-out.  Kagome looked at it, a useless amalgam of cloth and metal.  She tossed it in a dumpster.

She slogged out of the main entrance after last class, shoulders slumped, feet barely leaving the pavement.  Her eyes didn’t leave the ground in front of her until she heard the dreaded pitter-patter of raindrops falling upon the earth, growing in intensity until the schoolyard was beset by a near-torrential downpour.  And she hadn’t brought a real umbrella today.  Perfect.

Kagome didn’t bother to walk home quickly, or find shelter, or even go inside to avoid the cold.  She just didn’t care today.  Suddenly, the rain stopped falling on her, though it was clearly still falling.  She sensed someone behind her, holding an umbrella over her head.  Her first thought was that it was Hojo, and she was going to have to politely tell him to buzz off.  But as she turned, not even bothering with a false smile, she discovered that it wasn’t Hojo at all.

“I-Inuyasha?”

“Keh.  What’re you doing out in the middle of a rainstorm, wench.  Trying to get sick?”

“I…” she started, then gave up.  She didn’t have the energy to argue with him.  Instead, she resumed walking, trusting he would keep pace.

“Shitty day?” he said after awhile.

“Mm.”

“Wanna talk about it?”

“Nope.”

“Do you…want to stay here tonight?”

Now that got Kagome’s attention.  Inuyasha had specifically granted her three days in her time, and had been very adamant about it too.  She was supposed to return to the feudal era as soon as she got home from school.  That was most likely why he was here in the first place, and her mother had probably sent him to bring her the umbrella.  Truth be told, she really wanted a hot bath, but hadn’t been planning on asking for more time.  To hear Inuyasha make such an offer, just because she’d had a bad day…it made the misery of the morning and early afternoon seem not so severe.

“You…really don’t mind?”

“Nah.  Just make me some ramen and we’ll call it even.”

He grinned at her, and Kagome was faced with the sudden urge to hug him.  She settled for ducking under his arm and looping her own arm around his waist, nestling close to his side as they walked.  He tensed, but didn’t pull away, eventually relaxing somewhat.  Kagome didn’t need to look at him to know he was blushing as red as his haori; her own cheeks were nicely pinked as well.  But it was a pleasant feeling, this sudden warmth.  How could a single word of kindness from Inuyasha make this otherwise wretched day seem wonderful?  How could he bring out a rainbow even though it was still pouring outside?  She didn’t know, but she was grateful for it, grateful for his presence, grateful for him.

Let it rain.
