Chapter Two

A Welcomed Reunion, An Unwelcome Guest

Kagome climbed up the ladder Gramps had placed on the side of the well. Man, she thought, I hope he didn't make up another bogus story of my ailments. Last week it was rheumatism, what'll it be today?

Only her family knew of her excursions to the Warring States Era of Japan through the Dry Well. Unfortunately, her grandfather liked to exaggerate some things. Instead of saying that she had the flu or a bad cold, he would make up some unruly explanation, claiming that she's contracted some sort of terminal illness. And her group of friends, which includes Hojo, actually believe him! The nerve of that man sometimes!

Kagome hurried up the steps and held her hand up to shield her eyes to the bright light from the sun. Ah, home at last! she thought. I can't wait to get some hentou. With that thought, her stomach growled, confirming her appetite. She only got as far as four steps when she heard a familiar voice behind her.

"Man, wait till I get my hands on her…"

No, she thought, oh, no no no NO! Why did he have to follow me back home! He won't fit in here, especially with those eyes and ears. She turned around to see her silver haired, dog-eared companion standing in the doorway of the building concealing the Dry Well.

"Kagome, can we talk?" he asked with a slight hint of agitation.

"InuYasha, I'm staying here for a few days. That's all there is to it! I need to make up some of my school work, and it won't help if you're here bugging me to come back to your time!" Even though, Kagome thought, if I get my work done, my attendance may keep me from getting into high school. Why did all of this have to happen to me? Kagome was just a regular girl until her fifteenth birthday. It still seemed like a dream that she couldn't wake up from.

"A-hem…" InuYasha placed his hands in his sleeves waiting for her to say, "Okay, InuYasha, if you insist, I'll come back with you." Ha, he thought, like she'd really come with me. She isn't one to be pushed around. After a short pause, he started, "Kagome, if it wouldn't be too much trouble, and since you're not coming back with me…"

Oh, man, don't say it, Kagome thought. Don't you DARE say it! You're not staying! That's final! No "if's", "and's", or "but's" about it! Although, it would be nice to have him around her house in real civilization instead of having to sleep in the forest on the cold, hard ground. She'd even be willing to share her-no, wait, no she wouldn't! And her mother would never let her sleep in the same bed with a boy. At least, not until she was married. And besides, she didn't like InuYasha in that way anyway.

"I thought I'd stay here with you until you're satisfied with your work in this world. And I don't want any backtalk about it." He didn't have just one reason for staying in this time. He had quite a few. For one, he couldn't stand to be away from Kagome. Secondly, he knew that she had a space reserved for someone here in her time, so he wanted to find out who it was and kick his ass. His third….well, he just didn't want to go back just yet.

Kagome's world fascinated him. They had buildings almost as tall as mountains, and their modes of transportation were remarkable. He had learned what a "car" was the last time he had visited this time of technology, and he wanted to learn more about this alien world.

"Kagome! About time you came home!"

InuYasha turned to see Mrs. Higurashi running towards Kagome. She and Kagome embraced, and when they separated, Mrs. Higurashi spotted InuYasha and walked over to him. Naturally, her first course of action was to touch his canine ears.

InuYasha silently fumed, even though the feeling was kind of nice.

Kagome could tell he was getting annoyed, so she distracted her mother. "Mom, you remember InuYasha, right? He's the hanyou that I'm working with to collect the Shikon shards. Would you mind if he stayed while I was busy with my schoolwork? I promise, he'll be too busy exploring to be a pain around here." She glared at InuYasha as a warning, which was "DON'T SCREW IT UP!!!"

InuYasha just stared blankly at her, as if he didn't interpret her glance correctly. Was that an extremely icy cold stare? He felt himself blush with anger and embarrassment, but quickly recovered, determined to be a "good dog" while he was here. He really didn't feel like sitting here. He shivered at the thought of Kagome screaming, "SIT!!!" and his face slamming into this extremely hard, cold surface he was standing on.

Later, after getting their unexpected guest settled in, the Higurashis sat down to dinner. After Gramps finished asking for blessing, everyone helped themselves to a plateful of food. When someone started slurping loudly, everyone stared at InuYasha.

::Blink blink:: "What?" he asked stupidly. Everyone stared at him with exasperated expressions.

"InuYasha," Kagome started, "do you know your table manners?"

He stared at Kagome with an innocent look. "What are table manners?"

Everyone about fell on their faces with this statement. Even if he came from the Warring States Era, he should still know about proper manners at the table!

"It looks like you have a lot more to learn about this era, InuYasha."

After helping with the dishes, InuYasha and Kagome headed to the girl's room to discuss their schedule. Once their, Kagome shut the door, looked at InuYasha, and had to suppress a laugh. He looked so uncomfortable when she shut the door. What did he expect her to do? She wasn't that type of girl, and he knew it. Then a thought hit her. What if he was afraid of what he might do? "InuYasha, are you okay?"

The hanyou grumbled an incomprehensible word, and settled on her bed pressing his feet together and shoving his hands into his sleeves.

After about a half hour of discussion, it was time for bed. Kagome went to her closet, dragged out her sleeping bag and laid it on the floor beside her bed. "Okay, which would you rather sleep on? The bed, or the sleeping bag?"

"It doesn't matter to me," InuYasha grumbled. I'd like to sleep wherever you're sleeping, he thought. He loved the smell of her raven black hair. Usually it smelled of some fruit or herb, and sometimes she even wore some sort of perfume that drove him crazy! Sometimes, back in his time, he'd sit there and inhale her scent just so he could fall asleep. It was like that was the only way he could fall asleep.

"Tell ya what," Kagome said, breaking InuYasha's train of thought. "I'll sleep on the sleeping bag, and you sleep on the bed. It's a lot more comfortable than the floor."

InuYasha just stared at her. Had he heard her right? Did she just think about him before herself? Was she offering him to be more comfortable than her? Usually, she'd take advantage of the opportunity for a comfortable bed, but… He didn't have time to think about this.

Kagome said she'd be right back, and came back with a shirt and pants. "These are Gramp's pajamas, but they should fit you just fine. I'll leave while you put them on."

He stared at her blankly. "How do I put them on?"

Kagome gaped at him. Did him expect her to show him?! Did he expect her to help him undress and get into her grandfather's p.j.'s? Well, better get it over with. "You're wearing undergarments, right?"

"No, I don't think so."

Kagome sighed. I guess it's kinda like dressing my little brother, except that I didn't have the same feelings for Sota that I have for InuYasha. She blushed and started to take off his kimono and gi. She was surprised to see his chest wasn't as big as she thought. It was lean and sexy, not bulky and ugly like the body builders of her time. She slipped the p.j. top over InuYasha's head and pulled his hair out from the collar. The instant the shirt was on, InuYasha unbuttoned the front, claiming it was uncomfortable and too tight with the thing buttoned. Kagome asked InuYasha to slip off his pants while she closed and covered her eyes. While he did that, Kagome couldn't resist looking at his butt.

Man, he's got a nice butt! she thought, resisting the urge to reach out and grab it. She handed the pants of the p.j.'s and told him to put them on. At least he knew how to do that. When he was fully clad, she uncovered her eyes, but kept them closed. She'd never been so nervous in her life. When she opened her eyes, she was greeted with InuYasha's golden youkai eyes. She squealed softly and backed up into her door. Her heart was pounding, but she didn't know why. Had he….had he tried to kiss her? No, no, that wasn't possible. He didn't love Kagome. He didn't love her like she loved him. She mumbled a short good night to her friend, and crawled into her sleeping bag.

"'Night," he responded. He laid down beneath the covers and placed his head on the pillow. It smelled intensely of Kagome, and he thought about taking the pillow back with him when he went back to his own time. After a few whiffs of the pillow, he fell into a content sleep, dreaming of Kagome in that little outfit she wore to bath.
