Author's note: This is the fifth chapter and I thought you might like to have a bit of background information about Tatsuyoshi. The character was first created in an unpublished fanfiction of mine called Cat and Dog. I integrated parts of that original fanfic into this one. Strangely the character of Tatsuyoshi hasn't really changed that much. He was always a white haired dog demon, and he started going to Kagome's school. Oh and he behaved exactly the same too. Anyway enough of the boring stuff. I'd like to thank those who have reviewed my fanfic especially loretta537 her continued support.

 

Chapter 5-Grandparents

 

“Where are we going Lord Sesshomaru?” asked Rin as she rode on Ah Un

She was looking towards the west, watching the sky turn orange as the sun started to set. Sesshomaru was silent as he flew next to her on his cloud.

“Be slient Rin. You ought to be grateful that Lord Sesshomaru is bringing you along” said admonished Jaken, who was riding with Sesshomaru

“I am Master Jaken but I want to know everything about Lord Sesshomaru”

Sesshomaru started descending into a forest far below them.

“I can smell the stench of that half demon Naraku” said Jaken

“Jaken”

Yes Lord Sesshomaru?”

“Be silent”

They landed in the forest in front of Inu Yasha and the rest of the group.

“Sesshomaru what are you doing here?” yelled Inu Yasha, putting a hand on Tetsusaiga

“That is none of your business. Be glad that for once it not you I have come for”

“What do you mean?”

“I smelt Naruku in this area”

“Its too late. I tore him to pieces with my claws” said Tatsuyoshi

“You. What is your name?” asked Sesshomaru, pointing at him

Tatsuyoshi remained silent.

“I demand to know who you are”

“My name is of no concern”

Sesshomaru drew Tokijin and held it horizontally across his body.

“Dragon Strike”

A blast of blue light flew from Tokijin and struck Tatsuyoshi square in the chest and kicked up a large cloud of dust. The dust quickly disippated, revealing an uninjured Tatsuyoshi, a sword held loosely in his hand.

“He blocked the Dragon Strike” said Kagome amazed

Tatsuyoshi leapt at Sesshomaru. Their blades met sparking as he landed. They pushed against each other's swords, each trying to gain the upper hand. Tatsuyoshi suddenly leapt back. He stood shaking before falling to his knees.

 

“Never underestimate your opponent, Tatsu”

“I won't”

“Instead make him underestimate you. Deliberately make yourself look weaker than you are. Then when he strikes, launch your attack.”

“Yes sir”

“Never attack to kill unless you have to. Instead make your opponent respect you and concede defeat.”

A young white haired boy looked up at the white haired man. The man smiled and patted his head.

“If you can do that then you will a truly great warrior”

 

Tatsuyoshi smiled to himself.

“Die” said Sesshomaru leaping at Tatsuyoshi, swinging his sword

Tatsuyoshi quickly stood and stepped to the side, kicking Sesshomaru in the back as he flew past. Sesshomaru bounced along the ground and into a tree.

“Lord Sesshomaru!” exclaimed Jaken in surprise.

Sesshomaru stood up groggily, pushing Tokijin into the ground for support.

“Jaken we're leaving”

They climbed into Ah Un's saddle and flew off, Sesshomaru holding onto Ah Un's reigns tightly.

Tatsuyoshi smiled sadly.

“Hey Tatsuyoshi why so sad? You defeated two strong opponents without getting hurt” Sango told him

“Yeah I guess I did” said Tatsuyoshi, slipping his sword into his belt

“So which of your grandparents do you think you're more like?” asked Kagome with a smile as they started walking

“My grandmother I guess. We both like being free and unrestrained. We're definitely free spirits.I definitely look more like my grandfather though”

“Which side of your family are you talking about?” asked Sango

“My mother's. I don't know anything about my father's side of the family” he replied sadly stopping and looking down

“It's ok my friend. I know nothing about my mother or her side of the family” said Miroku, putting a hand on his shoulder

“Thankyou monk” said Tatsuyoshi quietly

“So you're a dog demon?” asked Sango, sensing that Tatsuyoshi didn't want to discuss his family

“Technically three quarters dog demon. The other quarter is elemental demon”

“Elemental demon?”

“There are many types of demons but most can be sorted into one of two groups” said Tatsuyoshi

“Group one is made up of animal demons” continued Tatsuyoshi holding up a finger

He brought up a second finger

“Group two is element demons. These are demons that appear human but control things such as lightning and fire”

“What element do you control?”

“What's with all the questions?” said Tatsuyoshi surprised

“We're just interested” said Sango “We've never met anyone else from Kagome's time, let alone a demon”

“So how are you and Yuka going?” asked Kagome

Tatsuyoshi tensed up and stopped walking

“Tatsuyoshi what's wrong?”

 

“Yuka can I talk to you?” asked Tatsuyoshi as he spotted Yuka outside her locker

“Sure thing Tatsuyoshi”

“Yuka I'm thinking about leaving school. There's not much reason for me to be here”

“What about us?”

“I'll still come see you. I love you” he told her, putting a hand on her cheek

Yuka closed her eyes and pressed her face into his hand as tears ran down her cheeks

“Tatsu I love you too”

“You're crying”

“Tatsu I love you I do but I don't think I can do this”

“Is it coz I'm-“
“No its coz you're so much older” she whispered softly

“I see”

Tatsuyoshi bent down and kissed Yuka passionately. She stopped crying as she kissed back. Tatsuyoshi pulled away a little and rested his forehead on hers.

“Love you”

“Love you too” said Yuka smiling at him

“So I guess this is goodbye”

“Yeah”

Yuka watched silently as Tatsuyoshi left the locker room.

 

“Tatsuyoshi?”

“I'd rather not talk about it”

“That's what happens when you mess around with mortals” said Inu Yasha smugly

Tatsuyoshi raised a fist and smashed Inu Yasha in the back of the head. He went face first into the dirt. Tatsuyoshi started walking again, making sure to tread on Inu Yasha. Kagome sighed and knelt by Inu Yasha

“You really should be more careful about what you say”

“How was I supposed to know he would be all sensitive about it?”

“It's obvious that Yuka dumped him. What you said just rubbed salt into the wound”

“Why don't we set up camp here for the night?” asked Sango

“It's not like we're in any sort of hurry” said Miroku

“I'll go hunting for food then” said Tatsuyoshi as he leapt away

“Inu Yasha you should go join him and say sorry. Shippou why don't you start a fire for us?”

Inu Yasha looked up and down the river. He followed the scent of Tatsuyoshi this far but he couldn't see him. Inu Yasha's ears twitched as he heard

“Dammit!”

Tatsuyoshi suddenly appeared chasing after a wild boar. It jumped into the river hoping to escape from the demon. Tatsuyoshi leapt and grabbed it. There was a sickening crack as he broke its neck.

“Hey Tatsuyoshi. Need help?” said Inu Yasha grudgingly

“Yeah. Can you help me gut this? I can't use my claws coz the poison will mean the others can't eat it”

“Ok” said Inu Yasha, dropping out from his tree

He walked over to the river bank where Tatsuyoshi had dragged the boar carcass.

“So where do you want me to cut?”

“I need you to cut along the stomach and pull the guts and everything out”

“Ok”

Inu Yasha smiled as he cut it open, not caring about the blood.

“My grandfather's brother was the one who taught me how to do this” said Tatsuyoshi in an attempt to make conversation.

“Really?”

“Yeah. He took me when I was about 10 and taught me how to survive in the wilds. I learnt how to fight from him too”

“He must have been pretty strong. You beat Sesshomaru pretty easily”

“Yeah I guess so” said Tatsuyoshi with a smile

He wiped at a tear that rolled down his cheek but missed it

“Is something wrong?”

“Feh its nothing. It's just that I haven't seen him in years. I miss him alot”

“Well I think I got it all out. We should take this back to the others now”

“Yeah”

Tatsuyoshi hoisted the carcass onto his shoulders. They walked for a while in silence.

“I'm sorry for the comment I made” said Inu Yasha awkwardly

“It's ok” said Tatsuyoshi after a while “Human's have short lives and find it easier to be with other humans. This isn't the first time I've lost someone I love”

“My mother died when I was young so I sort of know how you feel”

Tatsuyoshi nodded and they walked together back to the camp.

“What a feast!” siad Misoku excitedly seeing the boar “Did you catch that Inu Yasha?”

“Not me. It was Tatsu”

“I learned form an expert” he said with a nervous laugh
