Chapter 9: ...Did This Happen?
Rosuto snapped back to reality first when she heard the person lying on the ground groan in pain. "Sesshomaru-sama," she gasped as she ran to his side.
Kagome was in a daze. She couldn't understand how something like this could happen. Sesshomaru was lying face down with his armor completely destroyed, his shirt in tatters, and blood seeping out of numerous cuts and gashes. She came out of her daze enough to run to his side, opposite of Rosuto. Kagome slowly reached out a shaky hand to his back to feel the slow, shallow rise and fall of his breathing.
"If Sesshomaru-sama is here, then where is Jaken?" she asked, worriedly.
Kagome looked around in the dark, trying to find Jaken. She saw a small movement in the dark and went over to it. Lying on his side was a battered Jaken, looking worse than after anything Kagome had ever done to him.
"Rosuto, I found him," she called, while picking him up as gently as she could. She then went to where she had left Rosuto and Sesshomaru. "Can you carry him in, or do we need help?" Kagome asked while shifting Jaken in her arms.
"I can carry him," Rosuto replied without looking up. She then gathered the injured demon lord in her arms and headed towards the castle at a speed she knew Kagome could keep up with.
Rosuto and Kagome went to an empty room once they got inside the castle. They got out some futons, laying them on top of each other for extra cushioning enough for both of the injured youkai.
"We need some water to clean the wounds and something to stop the bleeding." Rosuto looked at her like she was crazy. "I don't care if they are youkai, the bleeding needs to be stopped." she said interpreting the look for what it was. "And stop by my room and get my big bag. There's some stuff in it that I need." she ordered.
At once, Rosuto bowed her head, realizing Kagome was right, and left to do as she was told as quickly as possible. Kagome started removing what was left of Sesshomaru's armor and clothes so she could see his wounds better.
Once she had a clear view of his chest, she gasped at the severity of several of the cuts. She picked up the remainder of his shirt and used it to try to stop the blood coming from his chest, trying to avoid applying too much pressure directly to the wounds.
Rosuto came back within moments with everything that Kagome had asked for. She set everything down by Sesshomaru's head and took over applying the pressure, so Kagome could get stuff she needed together.
When she got everything ready, Rosuto went over to check on Jaken's wounds. She found they weren't as severe as Sesshomaru's, but still needed to be tended to.
Rosuto turned to Kagome. "I need a cloth for Jaken. His wounds aren't as bad." Kagome nodded, rinsed out the cloth she had been using and handed it to Rosuto and got another one to work with on Sesshomaru.
After they had gotten the wounds cleaned up and the bleeding slowed, Kagome took some salve and gauze out of her bag and gave some to Rosuto so she could put it on Jaken's wounds. After the wounds had been cleaned and had the antibiotic salve put on, Rosuto and Kagome wrapped the cuts up.
After they got that done, Rosuto went about cleaning up the mess they had made with all the dirty rags and gauze. Kagome went to the closet and got out some blankets to keep Sesshomaru and Jaken warm. Only when she was putting the blanket over Sesshomaru did she notice the state of dress, or rather undress, that he had been in, causing her to blush darkly.
Kagome wasn't sure why she had undressed Sesshomaru so completely and hadn't noticed it until she put the blanket over him. She stayed up most of the night, sitting in between Sesshomaru and Jaken, watching both of them for any signs that there was something wrong. She had sent Rosuto to bed so that at least one of them would get some semblance of rest.
The next morning, Rosuto checked on Sesshomaru and Jaken, and was slightly surprised to find Kagome curled up in a ball, asleep, cuddled up next to Sesshomaru. She smiled at the scene and decided to take advantage of the situation and see what she was dreaming of.
She sent out a mental probe into the young miko's mind and was only mildly surprised with what she found there. Kagome was having a pleasant dream about her and Sesshomaru watching Rin and Shippo play in a field of flowers. She sensed the girl waking and withdrew her probe.
Rosuto went to check Jaken's wounds and, upon finding them mostly healed, decided to move him into his usual sleeping quarters. When she had returned, Kagome was awake and checking Sesshomaru's injuries. She looked up when Rosuto re-entered the room, with traces of a blush still evident on her face.
"They aren't healing as fast as they should." she said, sounding worried. "And Jaken is no longer here."
"I have moved Jaken to his quarters and he is resting there. Sesshomaru-sama had lost a great deal of blood, even for a youkai, and it may take longer for his body to recover." Rosuto explained with a hidden knowing smile. Kagome nodded, though not thoroughly relieved of her worry.
Rosuto left without another word and came back minutes later with a tray of food and set beside Kagome. She hardly acknowledge it with a small nod while still staring worriedly at Sesshomaru. Rosuto understood why Kagome was so worried about the demon lord, she had seen the emotion that had been very strong in her dream. She smiled and made to leave the young woman to watch over the demon lord.
"Rosuto, could you look in the library for some scrolls about miko healing?" she asked quietly, without looking up.
Rosuto was confused for a minute, then she realized what the miko planned to do. "Yes, Kagome-sama. I'll be back as soon as I can." she replied, walking out the door, towards the library.
Kagome sat by Sesshomaru's side watching over him, wondering why she was so worried about him. He had tried to kill her before and then he had kidnapped her. She was still, as she thought, unreasonably concerned about him, no matter what he had done to her in the past.
She heard a groan, and looked down to see Sesshomaru's eyes open, then close again against the light coming in through the window.
"Where am I?" Sesshomaru asked as he tried to sit up.
Kagome leaned forward to push him back down. "You're right where you should be. Now lie back down before you hurt yourself." Kagome told him, still pressing down on his shoulders.
He complied, only because it hurt to sit up. "Why haven't I healed yet?" he asked.
"How should I know. The only reason I can come up with, and Rosuto, is that you lost too much blood and that is hindering your healing." She explained, turning away so that he wouldn't see how concerned she was about him. "What happened to you?" she asked.
"Someone attacked me while I was on the way back. I don't know who it was. After I fought with him, I got knocked out and then I saw Jaken try to fight him. I don't know what happened to Jaken." Sesshomaru told her, looking away, embarrassed that he had been beaten by an unknown advesary.
Kagome smiled. "Jaken is here." Sesshomaru looked at Kagome, surprised, making her laugh more. "Somehow you two got here. Rosuto and I brought you in and bandaged your wounds. Jaken wasn't as bad as you so Rosuto moved him to his room." Kagome told him with a smile.
"Rosuto?" he asked, confused.
"Rosutoashura." Kagome said, smiling. "Rosuto is my nickname for her." she explained.
That confused Sesshomaru even more. "She has never allowed anyone to give her a nickname, let alone use it." He explained to her. "I don't remember coming back here." he said, changing subjects.
"I don't know how you got back either. I just sensed an aura that felt weak from fighting and Rosuto and I went to see what it was. Then we brought you in, like I said before." she told him. He nodded as Rosuto came back in.
"Sesshomaru-sama, you are awake." she cried as she ran to his side. She then regained her composure and bowed her head, making her miss the small smile that graced Sesshomaru's lips for a second.
"Rosuto, did you find the scroll that I asked you for?" Kagome asked, making her look up. Rosuto nodded. "Good." She then looked to Sesshomaru again. "Do you think you could eat something?" she asked.
He had been resting his eyes, but opened them and looked at Kagome when she spoke. He nodded, not wanting Kagome to know how weak he really was, not just because she was a human, which confused him.
"Rosuto, could you leave the scroll here and go to get him something to eat?" Kagome asked, addressing the demon woman, who got up, handed Kagome the scroll, and then with a quick bow, left to do as she was asked.
Sesshomaru closed his eyes and Kagome sat back to read through some of the scroll, hoping to find something useful. She had been practicing with her powers so she should be able to do a basic healing.
"What is that you are reading?" Sesshomaru asked, startling Kagome.
After she calmed her heart down, she realized Sesshomaru now had his eyes open and was curiously staring at her. "It's a scroll on miko powers." was all she said. She didn't want him to know she was so worried about him that she wanted to know how to heal with her miko powers.
He could tell she didn't want to tell him everything, so he decided to ask her another question. "What happened to my armor and clothes?" he said, looking up at her.
She blushed and bowed her head some, causing her bangs to partially hide the blush, but not before Sesshomaru caught a glimpse of it. "We had to have access to you wounds, so I removed what was left of them." she said quietly.
Sesshomaru looked confused. "What was left of them?" he repeated in a question.
Kagome nodded. "Yes. Your clothes were shredded and your armor was shattered." she explained. He nodded, closing his eyes, and Kagome went back to her reading, both sitting in silence until Rosuto came back with food for Sesshomaru.
After Sesshomaru had eaten the soup that Rosuto brought for him, he fell back asleep. Rosuto took all the dishes to the kitchen for the other servants to wash and went back to help Kagome go through the scroll. About halfway through the scroll, they found what they had been looking for, a way for Kagome to use her miko powers to heal.
It was actually very simple. All she had to do was concentrate on her power, but not quite the same way as when she purified something, though the idea was the same. The healing ability just came from a different part of her miko powers, but she had to meditate to learn how to separate it.
After meditating for a few hours, she could easily separate several parts of her miko powers. She could tell the difference between them by the way they felt. The purifying part felt incredibly pure while the healing part felt kind, helpful. She knew this because she had practiced on Jaken, but only after she was almost certain that she had access to the right part of her energy.
Sesshomaru woke up to a smiling Kagome. "What are you smiling about?" he asked irritated.
"Look," she said, pointing to his chest, now free of bandages and any evidence of the cuts that had been there the last time he woke. "That's not all," she added, directing his attention to his missing left arm, that was no longer missing.
He sat up, looking at her amazed. "How did this happen?" he asked, completely astounded.
Kagome smiled even more. "I healed you." she explained.
He shook his head. "How?"
She laughed a little. "With my miko powers. How else would a miko heal someone?" she replied.
"Yes, but how did I get my arm back?" he asked, staring at it. It was indeed his arm. The stripes around his wrist was there and everything. He had always thought the girl almost useless.
"That I'm not totally sure of. I just meant to heal your cuts, but I guess I sent enough energy into you that it healed your arm. I do remember the scroll saying that if enough energy is sent, that it can heal anything that is already healing in the body, but that wouldn't explain why your arm came back, would it?" she said, pondering over the possibility.
"It would." Sesshomaru spoke, drawing Kagome's attention to him. "My arm was alreay healing. It just would have taken a century or two for it to grow back completely." he explained.
"Wow, I didn't know you could do that." she said, awed.
"Well, I didn't know you could heal me, so we are even on that matter." he said.
"Actually, I wasn't sure if I could until I found it in that scroll I was reading. I had hoped it was possible, but I didn't know." she said, sheepishly.
Sesshomaru was surprised. "You learned how to heal in a mere few hours?" he asked. She nodded and he said no more on the subject. He was still perplexed by her accomplishment. It took miko's, trained all their lives, months to learn how to heal properly, with much guidance and she had done it in a few hours, with no one to guide her.
"Why did you wish to learn to heal?" he asked her.
Kagome looked away. That was the one question she had hoped he wouldn't ask her. "You were hurt and I didn't want you to be hurt." she said quietly, not looking at him.
He was shocked by her honesty and what her response meant. It meant she cared about him, how much she cared, he didn't know, but that didn't matter just then. He didn't know why it concerned him so much that she cared, but it did, greatly, and he like it that she did.
