Chapter 10: Chapter Ten
"You should rest some more," her voice brought his attention back to her face. "I may have healed you, but your body probably needs time to adjust." she told him, not being able to look at him after what she had told him before.
What she was looking at was the spare futon on the floor. After healing Sesshomaru, she felt really tired. 'Probably from all the energy I used,' she thought. Once she was sure Sesshomaru was asleep, she crawled on to the other futon, curled up, and was soon asleep.
Rosuto came in a while later to find a healed Sesshomaru watching a sleeping Kagome. For a minute she just stood there, watching Sesshomaru watching Kagome.
"What do you want, Rosutoashura?" Sesshomaru's voice startled her.
"I was just checking on you and Kagome-san, milord." she said, bowing low.
"You seem much more relaxed around Kagome, not as formal." Sesshomaru stated, rolling over and sitting up to look at Rosuto.
"I am sorry, milord," she started apologizing.
"I think it is better for you." Sesshomaru interrupted her. "You were never a true servant. I could still feel your sense of self whenever I saw you. You may do whatever you want. No matter what you think you owe me, it does not matter to me. It never did." he told her.
Rosuto looked up shocked. He had sounded almost gentle. "Milord, I would wish to stay here." she told him, still looking at him, waiting for his reaction.
"You no longer need to call me your lord. If you wish to stay, then you will do so as a guest." Sesshomaru said.
"I must. I am a resident of the Western Lands and you are still the Lord of the Western Lands and therefore you are still my lord." she explained to him.
He smiled at her, just a little, but it was still a smile. "As you wish." he replied. He made to get up but then remembered that he only had the blanket as a covering and sat back down. "I understand that Kagome has also healed Jaken?" he asked. Rosuto nodded. "Could you have him bring me a kimono?"
Rosuto smile. "Yes. I will send him." she said as she stood up. When she reached the door she stopped. "You could have asked me and I still would have done it for you." Before Sesshomaru could respond she was out the door and had closed it behind herself.
He heard Kagome moan a little in her sleep, so he turned around to watch her while he waited for Jaken. He watched her as she slept. He had feigned sleep so that she would go to sleep. He knew that she would not rest if he wasn't and he wasn't tired. Besides, he wanted time to think about what she had said earlier about not wanting him hurt, even after all of the things he had done to her and her companions.
That was what confused him the most, that she still cared about him, even though she had only truly seen one side of his personality. Of course, the other sides were always well hidden, and no one ever saw something he didn't want them to and lived to tell anyone else about it. Except for Rin. Somehow, she had managed to awaken something inside of him, something that had been dormant for a very long time, even for a demon.
Then Kagome came and made him care about something besides himself, the Tetsusagai, and the Western Lands. Sure, he cared about Rin, but not as much as he cared about Kagome.
He heard her moan in her sleep again and wondered what she could be dreaming about that would cause her to make such sounds. Though he wasn't complaining about them. They were rather pleasant to his sensitive ears.
"Milord, you are alright. This Jaken is so happy." Sesshomaru turned around to see Jaken standing in the doorway with a folded kimono in his arms.
"How did such a thing happen, milord? It was just last night we were both greatly wounded." Jaken spoke as he tried to bow without wrinkling his master's kimono.
"Jaken," Sesshomaru said in a commanding voice that caused his loyal servant to shake with fear. "Stand up and look at me." he ordered.
Jaken did as he was told, though he was shaking, and as soon as he fully looked up at his lord, he stop doing everything, even breathing. When he finally did breathe again, he took in several deep breaths.
"Milord, your ARM!! It has grown back, milord. How did such a wonder happen?" Jaken squacked.
"Kagome healed us and when she healed me, my arm grew back." Sesshomaru explained while he turned back around to look at Kagome.
"Why would she do such a thing, milord?" Jaken asked, confused.
"She told me that she wished to increase her powers." he lied. "So, she found a scroll, practiced on you, and then healed myself." Sesshomaru told him. "Leave my kimono and go watch Rin." Sesshomaru ordered.
"Yes, milord. This humble Jaken will do as you say." he said as he set the kimono down and left.
After Jaken had left Sesshomaru turned and went to where Jaken had set his kimono and got dressed.
"I thought I told you to get some rest, not get dressed." Sesshomaru heard Kagome's voice behind him as he tied the last knot. He turned around to see Kagome sitting up, staring at him.
Sesshomaru smirked. "You wished me to stay naked?" he asked. His smirk grew when he saw her blush and look away. He raised an eyebrow at her. "So you did."
She looked up at him, shocked. When she looked at him she was even more shocked. He was smiling. She just stared at him. Sesshomaru, cold, stoic Lord of the Western Lands, had a sense of humor. She was amazed.
"What?" he asked, curious why she was staring at him like she was.
"You're smiling." she said, dumbfounded.
"So..."
"So, I've only ever seen a Inuyasha's-going-to-die smirk or a lopsided if- you-think-it's-amusing sort of twist of the mouth. I thought it was beneath your dignity to smile." she said.
"I can smile, for the right reason." he said, still with a small smirk.
"So what was your reason for smiling this time?" she asked, curious.
He didn't answer her question. "You should get some more rest, you expended a lot of energy to heal Jaken and myself." Sesshomaru said as he headed towards the door.
"Where is Rosuto?" Kagome asked.
"She is no longer a servant here. She is now a guest." Sesshomaru told her.
"So I can't talk to her anymore? I still don't know my way around here." Kagome yelled at him, forgetting her drained state.
He gave her what he supposed she called a lopsided if-think-it's-amusing sort of twist of the mouth. "You may still talk to her, I was only informing you that she was no longer a servant." Sesshomaru told her.
"That's just fine. I tried not to treat her like a servant. I don't really like the idea of servatude." Kagome informed him.
"Of course." Sesshomaru said, his eyes dancing. "Since you don't know your way around here, I suppose you need an escort to your room. Come, I will show you." Sesshomaru said.
Kagome nodded, then grabbed her over-sized back pack. She was about to toss it on her shoulders when Sesshomaru took it from her, slinging it over his left shoulder. Kagome never realized how glad he would be to have his left arm back. She just quietly followed Sesshomaru out the door, heading towards what she supposed was her room.
After five minutes of silence Kagome spoke up. "You know, you never answered my question earlier."
"It is of no concern to you." Sesshomaru told her, turning down yet another hallway. The castle seemed to have no shortage of hallways, that was for sure.
"You were smiling after teasing ME. I think that would concern me." Kagome told him, getting mad that he didn't want to answer such a simple question. "I think that if I caused it, or had something to do with it, then I should be concerned by it." She said with conviction, but her voice lowered with what she said next. "You look good when you smile and I want to know how to make you smile again."
That made Sesshomaru stop and turn to face Kagome, who had not been paying attention, and she ran into him. She would have fallen if Sesshomaru had not put his free hand behind her to catch her, but he took it one step further and pulled her up against his chest, dropping her bag in the process. Her hands were trapped between them, flat against his chest, but she wasn't trying to get away.
"What do you care? Why should you, for that matter. I've done enough to you and your companions that you should never trust me again, in my lifetime. I don't deserve it." He said with some bitterness, but Kagome could tell that it was directed towards himself, not her.
"I care about you." That was all Kagome could manage to get out. She couldn't think very straight. Sesshomaru was holding her and if felt oh-so-good to be there in his arms, almost like that was where she was meant to be. It felt like home in his arms, and she wanted to stay there as long as she could.
"Why? Why do you care about me?" he asked, almost desperate to know. He leaned his head against hers, inhaling her scent. He decided that she smelled sweet, like jasmine and a fresh rain.
"Do I really need a reason?" She felt Sesshomaru nod his head from where it was, against her own. "You want a reason, I'll give you two. Rin and Rosuto." Kagome said, leaning into the embrace and fisting her hands in the front of his kimono.
"They are not real reasons." he said into her hair.
"They are to me and that's all that matters. If you insist I explain, like I'm sure you will, then I will." she said as she snuggled into Sesshomaru's chest. She could feel his strong muscles through his kimono. He nodded for her to go on and she did. "You took them in, cared for them. You may have told yourself that you had a different reason for it, but deep down you knew better. That's why you wanted me to stay here as a mother for Rin and why you told Rosuto she was no longer a servant. You care about others, even if you don't admit it to yourself." she explained into his chest. The entire time she had been speaking, her voice had been getting softer and softer, and now she was almost asleep.
Sesshomaru picked Kagome up bridal style, and slung her bag back over his shoulder, and once again headed towards her room. "You need sleep. We will continue this later." He told her in a soft, gentle voice. Kagome just nodded and curled up against his chest further, sighing her contentment.
Hours later, Kagome woke in the dark, but she could tell she wasn't alone. She looked to her right and saw moonlight shining off of silver hair. At first, she thought it was Inuyasha. Then she saw the indigo crescent moon, partially covered by bangs and realized it was Sesshomaru in the bed next to her. She took some time to study his face. There was really only one word she could think of to describe him, beautiful, and that was greatly inadequate. She was suddenly startled when she was abruptly looking into gold, almost amber, eyes.
"I thought you would have had enough time last night to stare at me, but I guess not." He said, and even though you couldn't really tell from his voice, you could tell from his dancing eyes. He was teasing her again.
"I was busy thinking. What are you doing here?" she asked, settling back down in the place she had been.
"You wouldn't let me leave. You grabbed my arm when I set you down and wouldn't let go. Then you started muttering nonsense about me not leaving you." he explained.
"You think me wanting you to stay is nonsense?" she asked, eyebrows raised.
He rolled on top of her, pinning her body with his own, his hands either side of her head. "It is when you are threatening to purify my new arm off."
Kagome had been slightly shocked when he rolled on top of her, but had calmed rather quickly. "It is a rather nice arm" She said, smirking. She ran her hand up his arm, but stopped suddenly when she realized that Sesshomaru was, at the very least, without his shirt. She looked up into his smirking eyes. "What happened to your shirt?" She asked, running her hand up to his shoulder and back down to emphasize her point.
"Shouldn't you be asking what happened to my shirt AND my pants?" He asked with a smirk that just grew when he heard her gasp in surprise.
"You are naked?" she asked in a small voice. She was a little afraid of what he might do, but she was also excited by it.
Sesshomaru could smell her excitement and it was pushing the limits of his well trained restraint. He ducked his head down and nuzzled at her neck for a minute. "I don't like to sleep in clothing when I'm here."
It took Kagome a minute to remember what he was talking about. "You don't worry about being attacked here at night?" she asked, trying to keep her mind off of what Sesshomaru was doing to her neck.
"They would have to be insane to attack me here." he said in between nips and licks.
He was getting more insistent in his actions. "We can't do this now." she said. Kagome gasped when he moved his mouth to her collarbone.
He stopped long enough to reply. "Why not?" He spoke in a playful tone.
"We just can't." she said, nearly panting.
Sesshomaru stopped his activity to look at her. His penetrating gaze piercing her almost to her soul. "Why not?" He asked again, all playfulness gone from his voice. When she didn't respond, he started to roll off of her, but her small hands gripping his shoulders stopped him. He looked down at her again and mentally kicked himself when he saw the tears forming in her eyes.
"Please, don't leave me." Kagome managed to say before her tears overwhelmed her and she buried her face in Sesshomaru's shoulder.
Sesshomaru wrapped her in his arms and rolled over onto his side, bringing her with him. He rubbed little soothing circles on the small of her back and ran his fingers through her hair in hopes of calming her. "Ssshhh, Kagome. It's alright, ssshhh." he repeated over and over in her ear.
Eventually, Kagome's crying and tears subsided as she fell asleep. Sesshomaru made sure she was asleep, wrapped her in his arms, then wrapped them both in a blanket, and finally fell asleep himself.
Kagome awoke to a very secure feeling and sunlight filtering in through the curtain around the bed. She kept her eyes shut, not really wanting to know what caused her to feel so safe, though already knowing, and thought about what had happened when she had woke up before.
'Why did he act that way? Maybe something went wrong when I healed him that caused him to do that. But I did exactly what the scroll said to do, so that can't be it. Do I really care that that is what he wants? He's a youkai, so maybe he can't express love like humans can. Maybe that was his way of being affectionate. But he was just so overwhelming. I do care about him, but do I care that much? I know that I no longer love Inuyasha, so that's not really an issue. But can I really be happy here with Sesshomaru?' Her thoughts were a jumbled mess, but when she came across that last question she stopped. She opened her eyes to look up at him. 'Yes, I think I can.' She thought with a content sigh as she snuggled down into Sesshomaru's embrace more and fell back asleep.
Sesshomaru had woke up when he felt Kagome shift, but kept his eyes closed. He needed to think about a few things before he talked with her the next time. 'Why did she cry? What did I do that upset her? Why was I acting that way? It's not as if I couldn't have waited. I could have waited, but it was almost like her scent had caused me to lose control.' Sesshomaru thought as he scooted further under the blankets with Kagome. He looked down at her wondering how a human female could cause him to lose control like he had when he had been able to resist doing so with countless youkai females.
'I don't care. All I know is that I want her, not just now, forever. If I have to wait to get what I want, then I will.' he thought resolutely.
He felt her stirring and looked back down at her. He couldn't believe how beautiful she looked.
"Morning." Sesshomaru said, bringing her fully awake. He couldn't believe how beautiful she looked just then.
Kagome opened her eyes and looked up at Sesshomaru. What she saw only strengthened her feelings for him and her decsion earlier. She wrapped an arm around his waist and pulled them closer together. "Yes, it is. What are you going to do about it?" She asked, her eyes dancing with mirth and a small smile playing on her lips.
He bent his head down by her ear. "Nothing at all." He whispered, making sure his breath blew across her ear lobe and down her neck. He pulled back to see her reaction.
Kagome was stunned. She could still feel a few mini bolts of electricity running up and down her spine. She looked in to Sesshomaru's eyes and saw them smiling down at her. "What are you going to do?" She asked, a little to breathy for her tastes.
Her question caused him to smile a little. "I'm going to stay right here with you." He said as he bent his head so he could plant a light kiss on her temple and then moved to nuzzle her hair, taking in her scent with each breath.
Kagome smiled and leaned her head on his chest. Then, she down the length of their bodies and remembered how little clothing Sesshomaru had on. "Only if you put on some pants." She said, looking up at him, smirking.
Sesshomaru nodded and unwrapped his arms as he got up. Kagome rolled to her other side, a blush flaring up across her cheeks. She felt Sesshomaru get back on to the bed. When she went to roll over when she felt him spoon their bodies together and wrap his arms around her, encasing her in a cacoon of warmth and security. She wanted to roll over, to share in the embrace, but she was so comfortable that she soon fell asleep.
