Chapter 12: The Dinner

Before the first course of the meal could be served, one of the servants from the front gate came in to inform Sesshomaru of a monk at the gate claiming to sense a dark cloud over the residence.

Kagome stood up, muttering. "That stupid monk." She said like she knew who was there. Before anyone could say or do anything, she was out of the room and on her way to the door. When she got to the gate, she wasn't at all surprised to see Miroku standing there.

"Miroku, what do you think you were doing, pulling that stuff here?" Kagome hissed at the monk.

Miroku held out his hands in a I'm-totally-innocent gesture. "I merely meant it as a joke, Kagome-sama." Miroku said in his best 'who me' voice.

"I tried to talk him out of it, but would he listen to me? NO! He just had to do it." Sango said as she stepped out of the shadows. Kirara was sitting in her arms and Shippo was setting on her shoulder.

Shippo was about to jump from Sango to Kagome when he noticed the kimono she was wearing. "Wow, Kagome. You look nice. Where did you get that?" Shippo said, pointing to her clothes, drawing everyone's attention to what she was wearing.

Kagome blushed and looked away a little. "It was a gift." she said. Then she decided to change the subject. "You guys are just in time for dinner. You should take a quick bath and join us." Kagome said.

"Yes, I agree." Said a voice from the shadows behind Kagome, startling them all. Kagome calmed down a bit and smiled a little when Sesshomaru stepped out into the light. "Since Kagome told the other lords about you, they have been talking about you. It seems they are rather curious about her friends." Sesshomaru informed them.

Miroku looked a little unnerved. "The other lords?" he asked.

Sesshomaru looked at him. "Yes, the lords of the other lands." Sesshomaru told him. "They are here discussing certain matters." he informed them.

They nodded, understanding that he told them more than he had to. Miroku spoke for the newcomers. "We would be honored to join you and your guests for dinner." he said, bowing. Sango followed suit, as well as Shippo from his perch on her shoulders.

Sesshomaru nodded and turned back to door. "I will have a servant take you to the springs and get you some clean clothes to wear." Sesshomaru said, walking towards the door.

Sango stopped in her tracks. "You want me to take a bath with Houshi-sama?" she asked, stuttering a little.

Sesshomaru stopped, looked over his shoulder, and sniffed discreetly. "Why not? I'm sure he has seen everything during some of the activities that you two have participated in together." Sesshomaru smirked when she blushed and looked away. "Thought so." He said as he continued on his way into the house.

Kagome looked at her and smiled. "Come on. Let's go in." She said, giggling a little, following Sesshomaru. Sango looked at Miroku and shrugged, then they followed them into the house. Shippo, still on her shoulder, was giggling, hanging on so he wouldn't fall off.

Sesshomaru was waiting inside the door and had a few servants waiting there to show them to the springs and get them clean clothes. After they were gone, Sesshomaru turned to Kagome and took her hand, leading her back to the dining hall.

When they were seated once again, the other lords were curious about who had been outside. They also wanted to know the servant had been talking about, the dark cloud. Kagome smiled and explained to them about Miroku's way of getting a place to stay, and that he had meant it as a joke this time.

"So your friends are here? Why do they not join us?" Karasuhebi inquired.

"Yes, they are here, but they were rather dirty from their traveling and went to wash before they joined us. Consider it a courtesy to your noses." She said, smirking.

Fokkusu looked at her, then cracked a smile. "I will." He said, chuckling, while his mate looked at him like he had gone insane. "If they won't be long, then we might as well wait for them before we begin eating." He suggested, looking to Sesshomaru for his approval of the idea.

"It will still be a few minutes before our food is prepared. We will have to wait anyway." Sesshomaru told them.

Karasuhebi agreed. "What is a few more minutes to wait? I believe it will be interesting to talk to them." He said, thinking. He was curious about the companions of such a powerful miko. What was more interesting about her was that she seemed untrained by any others.

Sesshomaru looked at Kuma, who nodded his head after a few minutes of elbowing from his mate. "Fine, I'll wait. I don't know why we have to wait for a couple of humans, though." he grouched.

"Oh shut up, Kuma. I think it would be nice to meet them." his mate scolded.

"Sesshomaru-sama. I'm bored. Can I go play in the garden until dinner?" Rin asked, looking cute.

Sesshomaru was shocked that Rin had actually spoken correctly, but recovered in milliseconds. "Yes. Jaken," he called and the toad demon stepped forward.

"Yes, milord?" he asked, bowing low.

"Take Rin to the garden and watch her. I will send a servant inform you when dinner is served." Sesshomaru ordered.

"Yes, milord." Jaken said as he stood and followed Rin.

Sesshomaru sent a look to Kagome that said they would talk later. After Jaken and Rin had left the room, the talk turned towards fighting and who had the best warriors. Sesshomaru just listened until Kuma said something.

"What's the matter, Sesshomaru? Don't you have any fighters to boast about?" he prodded.

Sesshomaru smirked. "Quite the contrary. I have an excellent fighter. I just did not wish to humiliate you all." Sesshomaru said rather cockily. That got everyone's attention.

Including Rosuto's. She knew he was talking about her. She just hoped the others wouldn't want a demonstration.

"Really? Please, do tell us." Karasuhebi petitioned. "Who is this great fighter that you have?"

"I think he's been holding out on us all these years." Fokkusu chided jokingly.

"If your fighter is so great, prove it." Kuma ordered.

Sesshomaru smirked. "I would hardly have one of my guests fight just to prove a point. Especially if it would ruin her kimono, which it probably would. Maybe later, if she wants." Sesshomaru spoke in a commanding voice.

"What do you mean 'she'?" Fokkusu demanded, extremely curious.

Sesshomaru's eyes slid over to Rosuto. "My guest Rosutoashura is an excellent fighter." Sesshomaru told them.

"You mean to tell us that this GIRL here can defeat our warriors? Why should we believe that?" Kuma asked, severely wanting to know.

"She is an Asura. On top of her natural talent, I have also trained her personally. Does that answer your question?" Sesshomaru asked, smirking at the gapping lords.

"How do you find 'em?" asked Fokkusu. "The best fighters I have are inu youkai."

A servant came in followed by Miroku, Sango, Kirara, and Shippo after Fokkusu finished speaking. Everyone in the room turned towards the door that they had entered through, making them new comers a little nervous. Kagome motioned for them to come and join them, which they did. When they had been seated, introductions were made.

Kagome noticed that Sango had on a beautiful pink silk kimono that had red sakura flowers patterned all over the material. Miroku was wearing robes, that at first glance looked excatly like what he normally wore. Upon closer inspection, Kagome noticed the robes were made of silk as well. She also noticed that he still kept the covering over his right had and sent him a questioning look that he didn't notice since he was too busy eyeing Rosuto. Once Sango noticed what he was doing, she smacked him over the head.

After a bit another servant came in, this one followed by Rin and Jaken. When everyone had been seated, servants came in with platters of food. Kagome noted that the order of seating at her end of the table had been scrambled, though the lords and their mates still sat in the same places. The order went as such: Sesshomaru, Rin, Kagome, Shippo, Sango with Kirara on her lap, Miroku, Rosuto, and then the other lords and their mates.

While everyone ate it was relatively quite, but as soon as they were done, the talk started back up. Rin was soon tired and Kagome stood up to take her to her room.

"Don't forget to come back." Fokkusu said, grinning.

Kagome nodded and felt Rin pull on the bottom of her kimono. She looked down and realized the reason was because the child had fallen asleep. Sango looked beside her and saw that Shippo had fallen asleep, as well as Kirara. She gathered the young kitsune and the fire cat in her arms and followed after Kagome, who by then had picked Rin up. Sesshomaru noticed the girls and ordered Jaken to show them the way. Kagome looked at him greatfully and walked out.

They were only gone a few minutes and when they returned, all the male eyes in the room were on them. They both blushed a little and returned to their seats. All of the lords, like Sesshomaru, could tell that Miroku and Sango had mated, but that didn't keep their eyes off of her.

"Miroku, why do you have the wrapping on your right hand?" Karasuhebi asked.

Miroku lifted his hand in front of his face and looked thoughtful. "It's a memento of sorts. It use to cover a wind tunnel that Naraku had cursed my family with. Now I just wear it to remind me of what could have happened to me." He explained with a far away look in his eyes.

"What could have happened to you?" Karasuhebi asked.

"If Naraku hadn't been destroyed, the wind tunnel would have grown until it sucked me in, like it had with my father and grandfather." Miroku told him.

"Now I understand why you traveled with Kagome. How about you, Sango? We were told you were the last from your village of youkai exerminators." Karasuhebi inquired.

"Naraku was the cause for my village to be destroyed." She then told them all about how Naraku had tricked her and her family. She then told them about how Naraku had used her younger brother to kill them all and then used him as a puppet.

Kagome looked down and Sango noticed it. "What's wrong Kagome-chan?" she asked, concerned.

"This isn't really the place to talk about it." Kagome told her, looking up at her friend. "We can talk later." Kagome said.

Sango looked concerned. "No, Kagome-chan. Tell me what is wrong now." Sango ordered her.

Kagome looked at her. "Naraku removed the shard from Kohaku. I know he did because the jewel is complete. He couldn't live without it, you and I both know that." Kagome told her, looking very distressed.

Sango looked upset about the information, then shook her head. "No. That wasn't my brother. My brother died a long time ago. You know that as well as I do." Sango told her, but Kagome could see the tears forming in her eyes.

"Miroku, Sango. You must be tired from all that travelling. Why don't you guys go to bed and get some rest. We can talk tomorrow." Kagome told them.

Sesshomaru caught what she was trying to do and ordered a servant to show them to an empty guest room close to Kagome's room. Sango looked thankfully at them both as she got up behind Miroku and followed the servant out.

"I can see why they would be glad that Naraku is gone. What about you?" Fokkusu asked.

"I have no real reason." Kagome told him. "Miroku and Sango aren't the only ones that had a grudge against Naraku." She then proceeded to tell the lords about Inuyasha and Kikyo. She could see Sesshomaru flinch whenever she mentioned Inuyasha. As barely noticeable as it was, she could still easily see it.

"What link do you have to this Kikyo?" Karasuhebi asked.

Kagome smiled. "You guys can ask more questions than I can." she said, teasingly. She then looked somber. "I am Kikyo's reincarnation." she told them. That confused them all.

"How can you be her reincarnation if she died only fifty years ago? That doesn't seem possible to me." Fokkusu said.

"If I told you, you wouldn't believe me. I just am. I had the Shikon no Tama in me and I was able to break the seal that Kikyo had used on Inuyasha to pin him to the tree." Kagome told them and noticed that Sesshomaru flinched once again. When she thought about it, he wasn't really flinching so much as he was flexing his muscles, like he was ready to fight.

Talk continued for a few hours until everyone was tired and wanting to go to sleep. Sesshomaru stood and ordered a few of the servants to show the lords to their temporary quarters and then escorted Kagome to her room.

After the door had been shut, Kagome started laughing. Sesshomaru shot her a questioning look. She looked at him and stopped laughing, but still smiled at him. "You don't like it when I say his name, do you?" she asked.

He looked at her and let enough emotion show that she could clearly tell he was confused. "I don't know who or what you are talking about. I don't mind when you say anyone's name." Sesshomaru told her, sounding cocky.

Kagome looked at him coyly. "I think you do know who I'm talking about. You don't like it when I say Inuyasha's name." Kagome said, noticing his muscles flex once again, and smiling. She then walked up to him and rested her right hand on his left arm. "I can tell. Your muscles flex whenever I say his name. I can see it." she said, smiling, looking up at him.

He looked at her hand on his arm, then at her face that was smiling up at him. "You're laughing at me. I don't like that." Sesshomaru told her.

"I'm not laughing, I'm smiling." she informed him in a matter-of-factly voice.

Sesshomaru placed his right arm around Kagome's waist and pulled her closer, leaning down to her. "Well, then I will just have to do something about that smile." Sesshomaru said as he leaned in closer until their noses touched.

Kagome's breath got shallow and she was sure Sesshomaru could hear how fast her heart was beating. "What are you going to do about it?" she asked.

"This." Sesshomaru said right before he closed the gap between them and kissed her.

It remained innocent for about the first five seconds. Then, Kagome slid her hand up to his shoulder and wrapped her other arm around his waist, while he moved his free hand to her neck. He then nibbled gently on her lower lip causing Kagome to gasp. Sesshomaru took the opportunity to dart his tongue into her mouth, running it along her teeth, then he started tease. He started to stroke her back with his right hand while he massaged her tongue with his own. Sesshomaru started to draw his tongue back into his mouth, teasing Kagome. Kagome got bold and sucked his tongue back into her mouth.

They reluctantly pulled apart for air, but Sesshomaru continued to rub Kagome's back and his other hand started to move for her front, until Kagome shook her head.

He looked at her, a questioning look clearly evident on his face. He almost wanted to scream his frustration, but contained the urge.

"We can't... I can't... I wouldn't want to get into something that you wouldn't be completely committed to." Kagome said as she tried to pull away.

"Who said I wouldn't be?" he asked, not letting her go.

Kagome looked away from him. "No one, but how could you be committed to a human. I know you've never been particularly fond of humans." she said.

He took her chin in his hand that had been on her shoulder and made her look him in the eye. "I may not like all humans, but there are certain ones that I am very fond of. And you are one of them." Sesshomaru said. He removed his hand from her chin as he continued to speak. "If I didn't like you, do you think I would kiss you?" he asked.

Kagome shook her head and leaned her head against his chest and wrapped her arms around his waist. "No, you wouldn't. I guess I just needed to hear you say it." she said quietly.

"Now you've heard me say it. Does it make you feel better?" he asked just as quietly.

Kagome looked up at him from her position leaned against his chest. "Like I said, I just needed to hear you say it." Kagome said. She then chuckled. "You know, I actually use to love Inuyasha." She smiled when she felt his muscles tense, but it only served to pull them closer. "But he's not worth my time. He's so hung up on that corpse that it's ridiculous." As she spoke, she leaned her forehead against his shoulder. "I could be happy here. If you asked me to stay, I could be happy here." Kagome told him.

"I thought I already did." Sesshomaru said.

Kagome smiled, though she knew Sesshomaru wouldn't see it. "You practically ordered me to stay for Rin. I don't remember you saying anything about me staying for you." she said, starting to feel sleepy.

"I'm asking you now. Stay for me." Sesshomaru spoke with a bit of hope in his voice. Kagome only nodded her response. She had tried to vocalize her response, but it came out in a yawn. "You should get some sleep. We will have time to talk later." Sesshomaru said as he picked Kagome up and took her to her bed. On the way he grabbed a sleeping kimono for her.

When he turned and walked towards the door, Kagome's voice stopped him. "You aren't sleeping in here tonight?" she asked.

Sesshomaru shook his head. "No, I wouldn't be able to trust myself." he said without turning around.

Kagome instantly knew what he was talking about. "Oh," was all she said before he walked out the door. It was quiet, but she knew he heard it. She thought about what he had said. She realized that he must have figired out the reason why she kept stopping him, but she decided she didn't want to think about it just then. She then got changed into the sleeping kimono, went to bed, and fell a sleep quickly.
