InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The 2 Great Swords ❯ Friend or Foe? ( Chapter 9 )

When Inuyasha returned to the meadow, it was dark. `Nothing at all. Why don't we have people coming after us?' He was convinced that something was wrong. This lack of pursuers meant that Naraku was gone, but where?
“Inuyasha! I'm hungry!” Shippo came bounding up to him as he saw the half-demon; his look went from excitement to disappointment upon seeing he didn't have any food.
“Shippo! You should have told me you wanted some food. There's some good mushrooms over there.” Kagome came up behind him and, after pointing to a small dip in the land, the kit dashed away. “What were you looking for?”
“Nothing much. I was just looking for anyone who's after us but there ain't any. Naraku must be gone if he doesn't care enough to try and track us down.” His expression turned into a grin. “Keh! Must've hurt him real good if he's out like this!”
“Excuse me for asking but, where are we exactly?” She gestured to the area of the meadow. “It's so peaceful and beautiful here.” She admired her surroundings for what had to be the 8th time in the last hour.
“A meadow I found a long time ago when I was traveling with my mother. The plants here block out any trace of scent so it's a good place to rest.” His eyes dropped at the memory.
They were being chased but luckily they had found this meadow. The demons after them had immediately lost the scent and passed by them. He turned to look at her. “I'll go catch something to eat. We'll leave tomorrow.”
Tomorrow came too soon for Kagome. The meadow was so nice and serene, leaving it allowed reality to remind her of her losses. “Hey where are we going?” She asked Inuyasha who was a bit ahead of her.
“Doesn't matter.” Inuyasha said simply.
“Hey, I'm curious too! Where are we going?” Shippo piped up from Kagome's shoulder. Inuyasha's patience was fading.
“I said it doesn't matter so be quiet!” He barked, causing Shippo to shrink back behind Kagome's head.
“Hey, you don't have to be so mean to him! He's just a little kid!” Kagome scolded.
“Keh!” He didn't say anything more as he stopped. “Here we are. We're going into these trees here.” He gestured to a lush forest at the side of the road. He stopped to think for a moment before taking his shirt off and tossing it to Kagome. “Your clothes attract too much attention. Cover up with that.”
“Why? What's wrong with what I'm wearing?” She asked in an accusing tone.
“Not too many people outside of royalty wear those things. Now stop arguing, you're supposed to shut up and listen to me remember?”
Kagome opened her mouth to comment but Inuyasha cut her off by tossing her a shawl. “Keep your face hidden too.”
“What? Why my face too?”
“Fine! This is the base of the resistance forces in the area. Although they're probably out of business now.” He began walking into the forest, not waiting for her opinion.
“What?! Why are you taking me here?! They won't exactly welcome a princess!” She shrieked as he turned around and glared, losing his temper.
“This is the ONLY place we can get information on Naraku. If you keep your face hidden there won't be any problems! Just shut up and listen to me!” His tirade was cut off by a rustle in the trees. Startled, she quickly tied the shawl around her face covering all but her eyes.
“Shit! We've been found.” He hissed. Whiz! An arrow shot out of the trees, grazing Inuyasha's cheek.
“Half-breed! You have entered where you are not welcome. Turn back now!” A voice called from the trees, the drawing of a bowstring accompanied it.
Quicker than Kagome could follow, Inuyasha leapt into the trees and tackled a figure to the ground. “Listen you; I'm here to see your leader. I have no interest whether the fuck I'm welcome or not but I can tell you that if you shoot me again, you will die.”
Suddenly, 50 or so figures dropped out of the trees around them, various weapons were at Inuyasha's throat. “What business do you have with our leader?”
Growling low Inuyasha replied, “I'm looking for Naraku. I happen to know your leader very well. Where is he?” The soldiers shifted uncomfortably at the name.
“Well then, I never though I'd see you again.” A monk dressed in purple ceremonial robes stepped out of the trees to their right with a woman beside him. She was dressed in a pink and black leather outfit of a demon slayer. “Let him stand!”
Slowly and cautiously, the soldiers pulled their weapons away. “Hey there Miroku, still alive I see? Looks like Sango hasn't killed you yet.” Inuyasha said grinning at the monk named Miroku. Kagome watched the exchange with interest, but refrained from comment in case her voice was recognized.
“Inuyasha, good to see you again.” The monk stepped towards him and held out his hand. Inuyasha shook it as he grinned. “I see you are traveling with some companions.” He looked over at Kagome and Shippo.
Before Shippo could blurt out Kagome's name and blow any chance they had, Inuyasha said, “The kit is Shippo and the girl is Hari, they're with me to seek out Naraku.” Miroku's kind face grew upset, all traces of warmth gone. “It occurred to me yesterday that if anyone had any idea as to where he was it was you.”
“I understand your logic, but I unfortunately know very little. The bastard keeps his movements cloaked quite well…” He turned to Kagome, alias Hari. “But enough of this let's greet our guests.”
Kagome stiffened as Miroku walked over to her, but kept her face hidden. “Why do you hide your face? I can see from your eyes you're beautiful…” Ignoring a warning growl from Inuyasha, he continued. “I have a question I want you to think about. Ahem.” He smiled at her. “Would you do me the honour of bearing my child?”
THWACK!!! Next thing he knew, he was sprawled on the ground with a good size welt on his head. The slayer had struck him with the giant boomerang she had and was seething with rage. “Miroku you lecher! Keep your hands and perverted questions to yourself!” She looked up at Kagome, “Hello, my name's Sango.” She kicked Miroku's form harshly. “I'm sorry about him Hari. He doesn't know when to control himself.”
Kagome didn't know what to think. First, she's giving a proposal by someone she just met, and now said person was half-dead on the ground. The oddest thing was no one seemed the least bit surprised of the monk's actions, nor the fact that they're leader had been knocked out by Sango.
Sango looked at her “Hmmm… you seem familiar, do I know you from somewhere?” Kagome took a good look at her and inwardly gasped. `The flower girl from the castle gardens? She was a spy?'
A long time ago, there was a flower girl who mysteriously disappeared. She was highly secretive and didn't talk much. On more than one occasion, she had spoken with her. They had become good friends up until she mysteriously vanished.
“Hey! C'mon!” Inuyasha was shouting, drawing Sango's attention. “We shoudn't be out here at the border of this base should we?” Sango nodded.
“Sorry Hari, but we have to go, he's right.” She began walking before stopping for a second. She then turned around and walked over to help Miroku who seemed to be semi-conscious.
Kagome exhaled in relief, and went to join Inuyasha as he was walking off. “Thanks”, she whispered. Her response was a small smirk, obviously pleased he'd solved that crisis.
A short distance behind them, Miroku and Sango were following just out of earshot. “Sango, our guests are hiding something…” The demon slayer nodded her head slowly.
“Yes… Hari is it? Something seems wrong. I feel like I know her from somewhere…” She said narrowing her eyes slightly. Miroku chuckled.
“Well I'm sure things will become clear sooner or later. Inuyasha couldn't keep a secret to save his life.” Sango smiled at him as they walked back to the camp.
