Miroku looked off into the distance, the past few hours a blur in his head. They had escaped the collapsing cavern with Kagome and Shippo in hysterics. They wanted to go back but they couldn't. There was nothing left, both fighters had been destroyed.

He sighed and lay back on the cool grass. It wasn't until Kagome had collapsed that he could get the group away. After a measly attempt at camp, he had gone off to be alone, tired off the glares he was getting.

He heard someone approaching. “You may not be the most decent man in the world, but I never would have thought you the type to abandon your friend.” Sango said coldly.

Miroku sighed. “You know what? I never have either.” Sango didn't answer. “How are the others?”

“Kagome's still out and Shippo's still in tears, nothing's changed.” She responded with the same tone. She didn't move clearly waiting for an explanation.

Miroku sighed and went back to looking back over the landscape. “Did I ever tell you what happened when Inuyasha and I met?”

Sango moved and sat down next to him. “He saved your life right?”

Miroku nodded. “Indeed he did, but apart from that I suppose we became some sort of friends that day too. I told him of my curse and was able to convince him to tell his story…”

Kagome opened her eyes to find herself in a village. She looked around to see that this village looked pretty good as far as villages go. The buildings were held together with something other than mud and the streets were clean.

She looked around, `How did I get here? The last thing I remember is…' She gasped as the images came back to her of the battle in the cavern. She fell to the ground as the tears came again. `Inuyasha…'

“Inuyasha?” Kagome's head snapped up as a female voice rang through the air. “Where are you?”

She looked behind her to see a woman walking around looking worried. `She's beautiful.' Kagome thought. `She looks almost like royalty.'

“Mother!” Kagome turned back around to see a small boy in red clothing running towards her.

Kagome couldn't believe her eyes. The boy looked exactly like her friend, down to his ears. “Inuyasha?” She asked but the boy kept running and passed right through her. Kagome turned in shock to see him bound towards the woman and jump up to hug her.

`Is this… a vision into the past?' Kagome thought. `If so… how am I able to see Inuyasha's past? I don't recognize any of this.'

The scene melted around her to be replaced with another. She was at a street corner this time, without many people.

“Hey half-breed! What are you doing here?” A boy said to her left.

“Yeah! You shouldn't be anywhere near us! We're normal!” A second boy said.

There stood Inuyasha, surrounded by three much bigger boys. “Shut up! I was just going to the market! Get out of my way!” Inuyasha growled at his assailants.

The boys snickered. “Oh yeah? What if we don't?” The biggest one taunted.

Inuyasha growled and tackled him to the ground, raking his talons across the boy's face. The other two quickly grabbed him and pinned him against a wall as the third got up holding his face.

“You stupid half-breed, you didn't even break the skin!” He said as he began punching him mercilessly in the stomach.
Kagome gasped and tried to stop the boy, but her attempts and holding him back were futile. She couldn't do anything but watch.

“Stop it!” The boy's froze and looked to see Inuyasha's mother running towards the street. Reluctantly they stopped and fled the scene.

Inuyasha got up slowly holding his stomach. “Mother… *cough* it's ok, I'm *hack* ok.” He said getting up showing the same bravado Kagome knew so well.

Inuyasha's mother reached him and quickly had taken him in her arms. Kagome's heart melted at the cute sight.

Once again, the scene faded to be replaced with a house setting. Kagome looked around in wonderment at the extravagancy of it all. It looked like a small palace. She walked around and found Inuyasha and his mother in the kitchen.

They were chatting happily until there was a knock at the door. Inuyasha's mother got up to answer it. She opened the door and there stood a man.

“Good evening miss, I heard that you're brat was stealing some food from the market earlier today.” The man said with a certain glint in his eye Kagome found familiar.

“No sir, he has been with me all day.” She responded. “I'm afraid you have unreliable information.”

The man grinned. “Oh I don't think so.” He said and with a shove pushed her out of the way and stepped into the house.

“What are you doing?! Get out of my house!” She screamed but the man simply kept coming towards her.

“I am sorry but, most of the other villagers have decided that you and you're brat are no longer welcome in this village.” He said as six hairy legs sprouted from his back and he grew in size.

Inuyasha's mother gasped. “You're that murderous demon! You're Nar—” She was cut off by him striking her to the ground with one of his newly formed legs. Kagome gasped as she recognized the demon that stood before her. `Naraku!'

Inuyasha ran out of the kitchen, “Mother!” He roared and charged the giant demon leaping out with claws outstretched. Naraku chuckled and smacked him out of mid air.

“Inuyasha, run!” His mother shouted. From her place on the ground. He ignored her and charged again.

“Do you really think you can beat me?” Naraku asked chuckling as he plucked him out of mid air and held by his neck. Inuyasha gasped for air and kicked wildly. “You should know you're place!” He shouted and threw him up in the air and smacked him like a ball hard into a wall.

Kagome gasped and ran to get in between the two. “Stop it!” She screamed but Naraku didn't stop he advanced slowly, getting ready to end it. Inuyasha looked at him but couldn't move.

In a final act of bravery, his mother rose to her feet and ran full into Naraku's back. “Inuyasha! Run!” She yelled but Inuyasha couldn't move. Kagome watched in horror as Naraku rose to his feet and with a roar impaled her on his six extra legs. With a swift pull, her body was torn to pieces.

“Humph. Foolish woman. He said and turned back towards the kid. Inuyasha screamed and with renewed energy, charged his enemy. He leapt and flew like a bullet tearing through one of Naraku's legs. He landed covered in blood and tears and spun back to face his opponent.

“You little shit!” Naraku roared and lashed out, knocking Inuyasha once again to the ground. The scene began to fade as Inuyasha started to lose consciousness. Kagome began to cry, being forced to watch him be killed again. But right before darkness consumed her, the door was blown off its hinges and a mighty roar filled the room.

Sango was silent as Miroku finished telling his story. “Who saved him?” She asked.

Miroku shook his head. “I do not know. I couldn't get that out of him.” He said.

“So… why did you tell me that?” Sango asked.

“I thought you should know that before I tell you this.” He said. “On the night before we entered the cave through those mountains, Inuyasha spoke with me. He made me swear that no matter what happened; I would listen to him and keep Kagome safe.”

Sango remained still as he finished speaking. “I… I didn't know.” She said slowly. “What a decision to make…” She said softly.

Miroku sighed, “No matter how hard it was, I made it and there's no point regretting it. I just wish I knew if what my decision was the correct one.”

“If it helps any, I think you made the correct one.” Sango said slowly. “I probably would've done the same.”

Miroku smiled at her. “Thank you Sango. That does help.”

Kagome woke with a start, drenched in sweat. She sat there panting for a minute before she calmed down. `Okay Kagome, think! What you just saw was Inuyasha's past right? How could you see his if he never told you?'

Then another thought struck her, one that filled her with a small hope. `Kaede said that my powers can connect me to people and their thoughts or feelings. What if…' She shot out of her bed and began gathering her things.

`He's alive! I just know it! He can't be dead!' She thought as she slung her bow and arrows over her shoulder and made for the door.

As she walked through it she saw Shippo sitting outside on the ground sniffling quietly. “Kagome?” He asked. “Is it my fault Inuyasha died?”

Kagome shook her head. “No Shippo. It's not your fault. Inuyasha's alive.” She said with conviction. “And I'm going to find him!” She declared and walked past him.

Without a second thought, he jumped up onto her shoulder. “Are you sure?” He asked hope clear in his voice. She nodded and he smiled. “Then let's go find him!” And with that, the two left to find their friend.

A little distance from where the unlikely rescue team departed, a small rat demon scurried through the brush in pursuit of the smell of decaying flesh. He weaved through the tall grass and branches until he came upon his goal.

He bent down to sniff. His find was once a wolf demon he determined, but something had removed it of its head. *Sniff sniff* Blow off more like. Grinning at the prospect of dinner the rat hopped forward but stopped dead in its tracks.

The sword the corpse held in its hand began to glow. An eerie light filled the clearing as the body was infused with purple light.

The demon watched with horror as its meal's head began to reform, piece by piece. As it finished, the wolf demon opened its eyes and grinned. “Stupid mutt…” He muttered before taking off into the foliage.
