Miroku woke to find himself in a rocky outcropping. `Am I dead?' He thought as he slowly opened his eyes to see Sango lying beside him. He grunted as he struggled to pull himself into a sitting position.
“Miroku! You're alive!” HE was knocked back down to the ground by Shippo barreling into his chest. “I'm so relieved you're alright! You were writhing in your sleep and I didn't know if you were going to pull through!”
Miroku groaned, “I guess… I overtaxed myself…” He looked back at Sango. “Is she alright too?” He asked.
Shippo nodded. “She's fine although a little beat up.”
Miroku nudged her a bit on the shoulder. She didn't wake up. He tried again and still there was nothing. Grinning slightly, his hand moved slowly down her body towards her bottom.
SLAP! “Sango! You're alright!” Shippo cheered as Miroku peeled himself off the ground once again.
`Oh well, it was worth a shot.' “I see you too are alright, dear Sango.” He greeted her rubbing his cheek.
She glared at him. “No thanks to you monk.” She growled. “What happened to us Shippo?” She asked.
Shippo stood up tall and proud, “I saved you!” The two stared at him in disbelief. “When I saw your shield go down I knew I had to do something so I used my fox magic to trick them! I let off a smoke bomb and quickly replaced you with dummies! I brought you guys to this hole in the tower!”
Miroku turned around and saw they were about a hundred feet above where they were fighting a short while ago. The soldiers were gone and where they had fallen lay two horribly done replicas of the two. They were dolls with stitched mouths and a lack of fingers or toes or even proper eyes. Miroku winced at the numerous wounds in both.
Sango whistled. “Wow Shippo, I had no idea you were that powerful.” She said appreciatively. “Where on earth did that come from?”
“They must be pretty stupid to mistake that thing for me.” Miroku muttered under his breath and earned a glare from Sango telling him not to spoil Shippo's moment.
Shippo smiled wide, his pride causing him to miss Miroku's comment. “I've been practicing with Inuyasha!”
“Inuyasha!” Sango gasped as she remembered their companion. “Shippo did you see what happened?”
Shippo shook his head. “I was too busy making sure Miroku didn't fall off and that you were ok to notice what they were doing.”
“We have to go check on them!” Sango declared and tried to rise to her feet only to utter a strangled cry and fall back down.
“We're not going anywhere. Our little magician here however…” He said looking pointedly at Shippo. “Should probably go check on Inuyasha.”
“Miroku! Do you think that's wise?” Sango asked in shock.
Miroku frowned. “There are no more traces of that army in the area. The only reason for them leaving is that they have fulfilled their objective, which worries me. Shippo, go find Inuyasha and Kagome.”
Shippo nodded and leapt off the edge, nimbly landing and racing into the tower. “I still don't know about this… what if he gets into trouble?” Sango asked Miroku.
Miroku smiled. “You forget that Shippo has proved himself on many occasions, he will be fine.” He turned to look at her. “I don't suppose… you remember what we were discussing down there do you?” He asked grinning devilishly.
Much to his surprise she answered without hesitation. “Yes I do, and I meant every word.” She reached and took hold of his hand. “And if you keep this under control I will keep meaning it.”
Miroku chuckled. “I will try Sango.”
Heavy eyelids flickered open accompanied by a deep groan. “Damn, what the hell happened?” Inuyasha muttered as he took in his surroundings. He remembered arguing with that stuck-up apparition and then...“Kagome!” He sat up sharply ignoring his body's protests.
He looked around to see he was alone. “Damn it, what happened?” He yelled at the emptiness around him. “Kagome!?”
“I see you're back to your usual self then.” A dry voice remarked from behind him. “I have to admit, you look much more natural in your half-demon state.”
Inuyasha spun to see the apparition had returned. “Huh?” He reached up to feel two triangle ears now adorned his head. `Could've used this earlier…' He thought sourly but didn't dwell on it. “What happened?” He demanded.
“You lost.” The spirit said simply.
“Where's Kagome?!”
“With the wolf.” The spirit replied just as simply.
Inuyasha rose to his feet slowly, several muscles and bones in his body still not fully recovered. “Damn it all! I'm gonna murder that flea bitten wolf!” He roared. “He should have finished me off, now he's dead!”
“You shouldn't do that.” The spirit remarked. “It would make that girl's sacrifice meaningless.”
Inuyasha froze. “What the hell did you just say?” He asked slowly. “You said Kouga took her.”
“No, I didn't. You just assumed that. She went with him willingly to save you.” The spirit said somberly. “She gave up her freedom so that you'd live on. It would be callous to just go and throw that away now.”
Inuyasha didn't move. “She did that… to save me?” He asked face contorting in confusion. “Why?”
“Before she left she said not to come after her because she didn't want you to die.” The spirit replied.
“What the hell is she thinking? She won't last two days with that maniac!” He said, his temper coming back. He fell to his knees and hit the ground, shaking the entire hall. “DAMN IT!”
The spirit watched quietly, allowing him to vent his frustration. He struck the ground several times cursing until his knuckles started to bleed.
“First mother and now Kagome? Why can't I protect anyone? Why am I so damn useless!?” He slammed the ground once more, the impact echoing throughout the halls. “I won't stand for this.” He said as he slowly rose. “I won't let what happened to mother happen again, I'm going to rescue Kagome whether she likes it or not!”
He turned to leave but the spirit materialized in his way. “If you go you will die.”
“I don't care.”
“Even with this you won't save her.”
“I don't give a damn.”
“Why do you insist on doing this?”
Inuyasha stood silent for several moments before lifting his head to stare the apparition square in the eyes, hard determination in his gaze. “I won't be weak and allow someone else important to me to die. Not again.” He said with heavy conviction. “Now get out of my way.”
The spirit did not move and the two stood staring at each other for several moments. “Is this the path you choose? To fight for those you care about regardless of the consequences, even if it should cost you your life?”
Inuyasha didn't hesitate for a second. “I just said that didn't I? Now get out of—” He never got to finish as at that moment the spirit exploded in a brilliant flash of light, lighting the hall with blinding radiance. As the light faded and Inuyasha's eyes returned back to normal, in the spirits place hung suspended in midair a sword.
The scabbard gleamed with hundreds of little jewels each one giving off a radiant light. The hilt was pure gold and on the pommel sat a red jewel that seemed to have fire circulating within it.
Inuyasha slowly reached out to take the sword with both hands. His body sparkled as he felt his strength return to him and his various wounds heal. He set the sheath at his side and grasped the hilt.
“Oh well… here goes nothing.” He muttered to himself as he took a deep breath and drew the sword. He held the blade out in front of him. “Shit…” He whispered in admiration as he took in the blade. It was gold just like the hilt but tinged with red similar to his robe. It was as if the sword had been made for him.
He swung it through the air a few times marveling at how light it felt. “It feels like an extension of my arm…” His face suddenly broke into a toothy grin. `I haven't felt this good in years! I feel like nothing can beat me now!'
`Well if you're quite done, I think it's time to go.' Inuyasha jumped at the voice.
“Who's there!?” he shouted holding the sword in a defensive posture.
`Interesting, you're going to use the sword to fight the sword?' The voice came again and this time he realized it was in his head. `You're not as dumb as you look.' The sword remarked.
“Wait a sec, I know you! You were that ghost thing!” He almost shouted. “You were the sword all that time and didn't say anything!?”
`It was for good reason. One of the ones who tried for my strength actually tried to grab me when I made the mistake of announcing myself as I am.' This caused Inuyasha to snicker.
“So what was I missing then?” Inuyasha asked out of curiosity now that he knew the sword was his.
`This is not a weapon for harming. Although it has unimaginable strength this power can only be used to protect. It was the will to protect this Kagome of yours that set you apart from every other hopeful.'
Inuyasha smirked in victory but quickly thought of something else. “Do you have a name or something?”
`I was born into this world known as Masamune.' The voice sounded in his head proudly. `Now that the introductions are over, I think we have company.'
Inuyasha's ears perked up as he heard the movement of small feet. He turned to see Shippo bounding towards him, amazed at how his senses seemed sharper than ever.
Shippo came to a halt as he spotted the blade. “Inuyasha! Where did you get that?! It looks expensive!” He asked staring in awe at the sword.
“Doesn't matter runt. We have to go now. Where's Sango and Miroku?” He asked as he began to leave in the direction Shippo had come leaving Shippo to scramble after him.
“They're outside resting. If it wasn't for me they would have died!” He said proudly. “Hey, where's Kagome?”
“Kouga's got her. That's why we have to move now.” Shippo wailed in despair and looked about ready to cry. Without missing a beat Inuyasha bent down to smack him once in the head. “Men don't cry! Men find a way to fix problems not cry about `em!” He barked and Shippo nodded wiping his eyes.
“Good, now come on! We have to hurry!” Inuyasha bent down and grabbed the kit, and set out at a run, amazed to find how light his body has become. Shippo screamed in delight on his shoulder as Inuyasha tore through the hall.
