slowly paced in front of his office window, the computer print out clutched tightly in his hand. He could hardly believe what was printed there.

Now he had to decide what to do about the information, should he follow up on it and pursue it or forget about it entirely?

Growling in frustration he reached for the phone.

“Akari, cancel all my appointments and reschedule for a later time. I have had something important come up that I need to attend to. If any calls come in I am unavailable to everyone for the rest of the day.”

Hanging up he went to a secret wall panel and withdrew two long objects. With any sort of luck he wouldn’t have to use them this day to save a life.

“Why was it necessary for my investigator to contact me over this matter?” Sesshoumaru asked the silent woman. Dressed in a simple pair of black slacks and a white button-up shirt, he motioned for her to take the seat before his desk.

He could sense her unease, but cared not for his part in its existence. She deserved nothing from him, would not benefit from the small reserve of compassion in his soul.

Intelligent enough to understand the thin ice upon which she skated, Kikyo took the proffered chair. “I apologize.”

Only humble supplication would appease him, this she knew. For what he could grant, no price was too high. Sad brown eyes flitted up briefly to reveal the misery hidden within before once more lowering to watch the slender fingers clutch the designer handbag nestled in her lap. “He … He has never been to unruly before. I didn’t want to bother you with something so simple as a tantrum. It wasn’t until the teacher called, threatened to reveal his odd nature, that I knew it was time to come to you.”

Sesshoumaru’s eyes narrowed on the petite woman. “Not before I was contacted by the Youkai Federation.” He tossed the printout onto the glossy desk top, watching impassively she scrambled to catch the papers before they slid over the side. The way her complexion paled upon reading the first few paragraphs gave him no pleasure, but did manage to assuage the annoyance he had felt upon her mess being dropped into his lap.

“They… They won’t take him away, will they?” she finally asked after skimming the entire packet. Her son, a quarter youkai, had been causing problems for the youkai in hiding. Inuyasha refused to come to Sesshoumaru for help, had even demanded her promise to keep their issues from the older male. Yet she had known better. Should have sought help for her son. It was her sacred duty as a mother, something beyond her loyalty to Inuyasha.

When he didn’t immediately reply, she stiffened. “They can’t have him!” Shrill, her voice echoed in the large study. They had been warned, but this was her son! Pink energy flared around her body as her aura reacted to the threat to her family.

“Calm yourself.” The order came in hard and deadly. He would not tolerate such disrespect. “Karo is safe for now. I will handle this on one condition.” He paused, waiting.

“Yes? What do you want?” She leaned forward, the papers dangling in her hand.

He glanced at the closed door. His mate was just on the other side; her aura gave her away every time. This was not going to be pretty. “You will subjugate him as the hanyou refused to allow.” He laid Tetsusaiga across the desktop. “You know what to do with this, I presume?”

The fang of his deceased father had been crafted to be joined with his brother to contain the wild hanyou blood. Mating Kikyo had removed the need, since her miko powers had proven apt to replace the sword. Knowing what it felt like to have his senses dulled, his abilities lessened by the subjugation that sword had offered - even if only infinitesimal amounts in comparison to a life of free instinct - Inuyasha had sworn that his children would not feel the bite of control.

Such lackadaisical parenting had nearly resulted in disaster. The science department of the school Karo attended laid in ruins. He had lost his temper and went on a rampage. Only through providence had the teacher been the only salient witness to his loss of control. Easily bribed, the woman would be monitored for the rest of her life, if need be, and the threat she posed annihilated if it proved necessary.

Kikyo sighed, having already half-expected his demand. “It will be done,” she promised in a soft whisper. Inuyasha would be furious, but it was past the time that they did something about Karo’s dangerous ways.

Sesshoumaru nodded at her compliance before placing the second item he had withdrawn from the safe on the desk. Her eyes widened in shock. “This is for the youngest.”

“Rin?” Her youngest was only three years old. She was possessed of a gentle nature, unlike Karo. “She is so young.”

He hesitated, sensing the question in his mate as well. “For now, it will serve as protection.” He would say no more. This sword was not forged from the fang of his father but his own power. Rin had stayed with them a few weeks ago while Inuyasha and Kikyo went on vacation. Karo, being in college, had not been a suitable caretaker. She had proven a quiet, unassuming child. Kagome had taken to her immediately.

He had been … fond … of her, as well. Inuyasha and Kikyo lived on the other side of the country. Close distance between the brothers was not conducive to peaceful relations. Should something happen to Rin while they were too far away to be of service to the smiling child, he would be most … displeased. Especially should it be to the idiot Karo losing his head, being so much like his father yet so different at the same time, it would not end without retribution.

Bakusaiga would let he and Kagome know if Rin needed them. Childless due to their decision not to bring life into the world that would only face struggles with their own biology, Rin was the closest they had ever been to feeling the joys of parenting. It had been a relief to send her home; children were disturbingly fragile creatures, and being in charge of such a responsibility weighted heavily on them both. Knowing she would be safeguarded, however, would give them peace.

“She will visit again soon.” He made the demand without preamble or leniency.

Kikyo nodded, too startled to respond verbally. He waved her away, shuffling papers on his desk in silent dismissal. Clutching the swords in her arms, Kikyo needed no other excuse to leave.

After Kikyo left, Sesshoumaru wasn’t surprised to note his mate lean on the doorway. “It will keep her safe,” he offered gruffly before she had a chance to say anything. “They will end up coming to me to clean up their messes should something happen.”

Kagome’s lips twisted slightly. “I know. You just want to make sure you aren’t bothered in future.”

“There could be no other reason.”

She crossed the distance between the door and the desk before dropping into his lap. He obliged her by leaning back in the chair, and waited as she settled across his thighs and slid her hands behind his neck to play with the soft hairs there. “Do you think she’ll come back soon?”

His eyes lighted on her lips, following her words. “She will,” he replied with the arrogance of the assured before dropping a light kiss on her parted mouth. Kagome sighed into his mouth before leaning into his warmth. Head nestled on his chest, she briefly wondered about children, and how nice it would have been to have that experience on a permanent basis. She could have adopted, but he would not abide a child not of his blood to interfere with his daily habits. Or so he assumed. Over time, she knew he would wear away, Rin perhaps being the key to showing him that blood was not the only precursor to family, and then they could possibly give a child a home in their hearts.

Yet… that was only a dream for the future, one of many. As his arms went about her middle to hold her close, she dismissed them just as swiftly. Dreams were for dreaming, realized they held weight, but reality… Sometimes it was worth anything, even a few things that could not be had otherwise.
