Prologue: Birthday Surprises
“Would you hurry up already?!” InuYasha yelled back to his lagging companions for what felt like the hundredth time. With an almost inaudible growl, he turned his head to glance over his shoulder at his `pack mates'. When the hell did I start thinking of them like that? he asked himself. He watched Kagome as she walked between Sango and Miroku; Shippo was perched upon her shoulder like normal. The four of them were chatting happily about whatever and, growling again, InuYasha turned on his heel and stomped back to them.
“What the hell is taking so long?” he grumbled in annoyance.
“Well InuYasha, some of us don't feel like running just to keep up with you! I don't see why you're in such a hurry anyway; we're still almost two weeks from Kaeda's. We couldn't make it there by tonight if we tried!” Kagome snapped at the bad-tempered hanyou, “I realize that tonight is your human night, but we should be looking for a safe place to stop, not whining about needing to pick up the pace. Did you ever think of that, baka?”
InuYasha was seething by the time she'd finished her little tirade and with a snorted “Keh,” he bounded away. Why does he always have to be such an ass? Kagome thought as she glared at the retreating hanyou's back. With a sigh she turned back to her other friends.
“I guess we could start looking for a safe place to camp for the night,” she stated with a shrug as Sango and Miroku shared a knowing glance.
They continued down their chosen path, picking up their conversation where they'd left off when InuYasha had interrupted them. The conversation moved into the topic of their last fight with Kirara adding her thoughts occasionally by meowing squeakily from Sango's shoulder. Kagome and the others were chuckling at one of Shippo's impressions of InuYasha when the aforementioned hanyou suddenly graced the group with his presence.
“There's a good place to stop for the night not too far ahead,” InuYasha grunted before falling into pace with the rest of the companions. Kagome perked up immediately when he mentioned that there was a both a river and hot spring near where they would camp. InuYasha was upset that Kagome wanted to stop for the night so soon, as there were still a few hours before nightfall, but he knew that she was just trying to look out for the group. If they stopped now they would have a chance to rest and relax before turning in for the evening, and it would make it easier for them to sit through their periods on watch tonight. Damn human blood! InuYasha grumbled mentally.
Shortly thereafter they reached their pre-designated resting place and immediately started to set up camp. Miroku went to gather firewood while Shippo got the water for dinner. InuYasha, like normal, disappeared only to show up minutes later with a few fish to contribute to the meal. Kagome smiled warmly as she accepted the fish from him and then handed them to Sango to clean. There's always somewhere to bathe nearby when we stop for the night, Kagome thought as she helped Sango clean the catch, He's so thoughtful when he wants to be.
As the sun set for the evening, the group finished their meal of fish, Ramen for InuYasha, and got ready to turn in for the night. Stretching, Kagome asked Sango if she wanted to bathe and Miroku perked up instantly.
“May I join you ladies?” he asked with a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. To answer that question, an aggravated InuYasha cuffed him on the head rendering the monk unconscious. Shippo shamelessly cackled nearby.
“Sure, I'll join you Kagome. Shippo, you coming?”
The still laughing kitsune nodded happily before scampering off after the retreating Sango. Kagome hurriedly gathered her bathing supplies and followed after the other two. Sango called a thank you to InuYasha for freeing them from Miroku's spying eyes just as they crested the hill and dropped out of sight.
Later, everyone slept peacefully after they had decided the order that they would take watch. Miroku would go first, followed by Sango, InuYasha, and finally, Kagome would take the last watch just before dawn. None of them suspected the rather interesting surprise that awaited them in the morning.

“AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!”
Kagome's surprise filled scream rang through the still morning air, startling still sleeping birds from their roosts and making a now recently reverted hanyou InuYasha spring to his feet with Tetsusaiga in hand. Immediately noticing that Kagome was not in the area, he bounded off in the direction of her scent; heading towards the river.
The rest of the group had heard the scream as well and were only steps behind the worried hanyou. Sango and Miroku, with weapons in hand, raced towards the water with a transformed Kirara running on air above them. Shippo clung to the fire neko's neck for dear life as the she bounded through the air. They came to a skidding halt a few feet from InuYasha as he stared open mouthed and dumb-founded at Kagome, who stood at the river's edge staring at her reflection. Kirara landed softly beside Sango and cocked her head to the side as she too glanced at Kagome.
Kagome, on the other hand, simply stared at her reflection in the water. Horror, confusion, and something unnamed chased themselves in her eyes as she tried to figure out what the hell had happened to her. She didn't even realize her friends were there until Kirara walked up next to her and nudged her side gently. Suddenly startled, she looked up at the large, two-tailed cat, and then turned to her very shocked friends.
“Kagome...” InuYasha whispered, trying to remind himself that he was indeed not dreaming, “What happened to you?” He suddenly found his pants to be rather uncomfortable as he stood there staring at her. And I thought she was beautiful before?! Holy shit, she's absolutely gorgeous now! InuYasha was practically panting inside as he struggled to get a hold of himself. The last thing he needed was for Kagome or Miroku for that matter, to catch him aroused by this.
Sango, Miroku, and Shippo simply stood a few feet behind InuYasha, jaws hanging open, too shocked to speak for the moment. Kirara seemed to be the only one unfazed by Kagome's sudden transformation as she just sat beside said girl, waiting for Kagome's reaction. The fire cat casually looked over the girl as if nothing had changed; almost like the neko had expected something like this to happen. Sango noted this and narrowed her eyes. *Kirara…* she asked through the bond they shared, *did you know about this?* Kirara didn't answer her long time friend and simply continued to offer her support to Kagome. Transforming back to kitten size, she crawled up onto the girl's shoulder and meowed comfortingly.
Meanwhile, Kagome was simply going over her body. Looking down at her hands, she examined the long, slightly curved claws she now had. Cute black dog ears, much like InuYasha's, now graced the top of her head and behind her a long silky black tail swayed. Studying her tail for a moment, she noted that it was more wolf like, than dog-like, reminding her of Koga's tail. Lifting her gaze from her tail, she turned her warm brown eyes to InuYasha. Somehow, she had become a hanyou.
Sensing her distress, InuYasha moved to her side and took her hands in his own, all the while fighting down the urge to kiss her passionately. He looked deep into her eyes, noting the sapphire, silver, and emerald flecks mixed in with the predominating brown. For some reason he felt he could drown in her eyes and be perfectly happy about it. Kagome suddenly looked away and blushed as tears began to fill her eyes.
“What's happened to me?” she asked in a whisper, but still loud enough for the rest of the group to hear her. InuYasha dropped her hands and Sango came over and hugged the now crying girl. “What's happened to me?” Kagome asked louder after Sango released her from the embrace. She looked from one person to the next, hoping to find an answer, when a very familiar voice spoke up from behind them.
“It's simple, miko. You've always been a filthy hanyou,” was the emotionless statement from the opposite bank. Turning swiftly, the group stared at Sesshomaru; who simply stood nonchalantly on the other side of the river. “I always knew there was something different about you, now I know what it is. You're a worthless half-breed, just like my pathetic brother. I'm amazed you've been able to hide it this long.”
Kagome dried her tears, her anger rising as she listened to Sesshomaru. Finally she'd had enough. Growling loudly, she grabbed the nearest rock and heaved it at him. Shocked, and now furious, the Demon Lord sidestepped the stone and glared at the miko turned hanyou. He opened his mouth to speak, but was cut off as Kagome gave him a piece of her mind.
“You arrogant ass, if I'd been a hanyou all this time, don't you think I would have helped my friends fight instead of always having to be saved by them?! How stupid are you? Obviously I haven't been like this the whole time because if I had been I wouldn't be asking HOW this happened! You…you….” Her ranting tapered off to a furious growl as she ran out of things to yell at him.
Why does this bitch not fear me? Sesshomaru wondered as he growled threatening in return. “I grow tired of your impertinence” he hissed at her as he sprang across the water, tokijin drawn and ready. As he landed he brought the sword down, only to have it met by tetsusaiga and a very angry InuYasha. The brothers faced off, ready again to try to kill each other, when Kagome sighed.
“Not now you two, we need to get to Kaeda's. Maybe she knows something about what caused this. Not that I think I mind…” she trailed off as she looked down at herself. She could get used to looking like this. Sesshomaru and InuYasha just stared at her, temporarily stupefied.
“You mean you like being a filthy half-breed?” gasped Sesshomaru before he could stop himself. Realizing his slip, he plastered an indifferent look on his face and snorted.
“You're kidding, right?” was all InuYasha could manage. He couldn't believe what he'd just heard.
“What?!” came the chorus of Miroku, Sango, and Shippo; although they seemed less shocked about the girl's statement than the two brothers.
“Well, think about it,” said Kagome with a shrug, “If I could learn what my abilities are and manage to use them at least semi-decently, I wouldn't need you guys to continuously save me. I'd actually be able to help; instead of being a burden.” She muttered the last part while dragging her toes in the sand, averting her eyes from everyone else's as a slight blush crept up to her cheeks.
“She has a point,” spoke up Miroku, earning a glare from Sango, “But Kagome, you have never been a burden. Without you, we would never be able to find the shards.”
Kagome just blushed harder, but smiled warmly at her friend, causing InuYasha to growl jealously when Miroku returned the smile. “Don't get any idea's monk,” the hanyou muttered.
Sheathing tokijin, Sesshomaru spoke next, surprising everyone yet again. “Perhaps, I will join you in finding out how this transformation occurred. I find it interesting that one can simply turn from a lowly ningen into disgusting half-breed over night and no one noticed anything.” He sneered at Kagome and in retaliation, she stuck her tongue out at him before turning on her heel and stomping away to gather up their stuff.
Sesshomaru's eyes widen slightly, showing that the girl had indeed managed to shock him, but it only lasted a moment before his usual emotionless mask was plastered back into place. However, the other members of the group caught it and Miroku and Sango walked away chuckling, carrying a whining Shippo and a seemingly content Kirara.
InuYasha was pissed that no one else seemed to have any problem with Sesshomaru suddenly joining their group. He would have to have a word with Kagome about this later, but since she was in a hurry to get to Kaeda's, he wasn't going to argue about the issue with his brother for the moment. He smothered a laugh as he watched Sesshomaru's eyes widen slightly in shock as Kagome stuck her tongue out at him, and his brother turned to glare at him icily.
“Yes, she's always that touchy. You'll get used to it,” InuYasha said with a shrug and then also made his way back towards camp. Following last, Sesshomaru wondered what he had just gotten himself into.
