Chapter One
Finding Happiness. . .
(1)
Darkness. That’s all she knew now. She slept, breathed, and lived darkness. It had been this way for a while. She hadn’t meant for it to go this far, but the pain was just too overwhelming, she had to find some kind of solace. She tried to take the high road, to stay on the path of purity, but the path of purity was a long and strenuous one that her heart and soul, she found, couldn’t handle.
She’d tried to ignore it, she hung in there for a whole year, but eventually her heart gave out and the pain took over. He had chosen her, a dead and cold priestess that was only a shadow of her former self. He had rejected all that she had to offer, warmth, love, happiness, all because of his honor.
It was a beautiful night, he had taken her to a moonlit clearing in the forest, saying that he needed to tell her something. He had grabbed her around the waist and leapt into a tree, aiming for the highest branch. She had closed her eyes, laughing at the feeling of weightlessness and exhilaration flowing through her body. Once he landed , she opened her eyes to see the single most breathtaking sight in her life.
From the treetop they were perched in, she had an almost bird’s eye view of the ancient Japanese landscape. What really caught her eye, though, was the moon. Since it was just the beginning of night, the moon hadn’t fully risen yet. It was full and sat nestled between two majestic purple mountains overlooking a beautiful lake surrounded by a dark forest.
The full moon cast it’s silver glow onto the lake, making it reflect a beautiful blueish silver color that was unique to the lake alone. The snowy mountain peaks couldn’t evade the moon’s light and they glowed a shimmering white, only adding to the illumination.
She gasped, amazed by the exquisite beauty of it all and looked to the silver haired hanyou beside her, admiration shining in her sapphire eyes. “It’s beautiful Inuyasha, thank you for bringing me here,” she said softly, leaning hr head against his red clad shoulder sighing in contentment.
Inuyasha stiffened at the contact, wanting to enjoy the moment with his beloved, but knowing he couldn’t. He shrugged her off, earning a confused gaze from the woman he loved with all his heart. “Kagome, you know that I love you and that I would do anything to be with you,” he said, a forlorn look crossing his face.
Kagome looked at him, wondering why he was telling her this when she already knew. “Yes, but what does that have to do with anything?” Inuyasha looked away from her, trying to fight back the impending tears that wanted desperately to be released. “Inuyasha?”
“Can you promise me something?” he asked, his voice cracking. Kagome looked skeptical, not liking where this was going.
When she didn’t answer, the knot in his stomach got larger. “Can you?”
“I guess, but what am I promising?”
He sighed, this was going to be hard. How can you tell the woman you love that you were leaving her for your former, and currently dead, love? How can you sit there and watch your beloved’s heart shatter into a million pieces, knowing it was your fault? How could you possibly stand to know that you betrayed your love’s trust just because you felt that your honor came first?
Ultimately, you couldn’t, but Inuyasha had to find a way or else he would never forgive himself. “You’re promising that you’ll always forgive me, no matter what.”
“I promise, but what do I have to for, you haven’t done anything yet.”
“I have to-“ but before he could finish, a siren like call wafted through the air. Soon after it, a lone figure surrounded by long, dragon like creatures, floated up from beneath the dense canopy. Her white haori and red hakama were flapping in the gentle breeze, her dull brown eyes reflecting her soul stealer’s eerie glow.
She landed on the branch below them and looked up. “It’s time.” Inuyasha moved to hug her, but she pushed him away, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. He looked as though he’d been slapped, his eyes wide and glazed over with unshed tears.
“Kagome, you promised. You know that I love you,” he said. Kagome just turned away from him and climbed down from the tree, not wanting to see his face. “Kagome please, this is the only way.”
“I hope you have a great time in hell. Kikyo, I guess you were the better one after all.”
That was the last time she ever saw Inuyasha, Kikyo, or the rest of the group. After that night, she couldn’t stand to be anywhere near them, the village, or the forest, they all held too many dark memories.
Just then she heard footsteps outside her doorway, and muffled voices. She opened her eye for the first time that day, or at least she thought it was day, her cell didn’t allow any kind of light so she wouldn’t really know.
She heard keys jingling and the telltale clicking of a lock before the door swung open. Bright light flooded the small room, causing Kagome to shy away, closing her eyes tightly against the harsh invasion. Soon, part of the light was blocked out by a figure that stood in the doorway.
“Kagome, it’s been a while hasn’t it? How have you been?” came a deep baritone voice. Kagome blinked and looked up to see who was talking to her, and when her eyes finally focused on him, they widened. It was him, the one who had promised her relief, the one who said he would help.
“Naraku.” He smirked, delighted at the fact that she still recognized him. It had been a couple months since she had been down here, since she had come to him for help. He had to admit, he was simply ecstatic at the idea that she had come to him, her worst enemy, in seek of comfort and help.
“Yes, my dear Kagome it is me, I’ve come to tell you that I can ease your pain now. Come with me,” he said, holding out his hand. She stared at it for a moment before hesitantly taking it and rising to her feet. She faltered and lost her balance, her legs too weak and neglected to support her weight just yet. She clenched her eyes shut and prepared to fall before two strong arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her too a hard, warm surface.
She looked up at him with wide eyes, wondering what possessed him to catch her. He simply let go and beckoned for her to follow him. She did, eager to be happy again. He lead her down stairwells, through hallways, and into various rooms before he came to a stop in front of a pair of double doors. He pushed them open to reveal a beautiful garden.
He grasped her hand within his and led her to an area where the only flowers that grew were lilies. There was a small clearing amongst the fragrant blossoms and this was where he told her to stand, saying that all her pain would be gone soon.
Kagome normally would have run the second she had gotten the chance, but she was so broken and so desperate to rid her heart of the immense pain that resided within it that she didn’t care who it was as long as they helped.
“Stand in the middle of the clearing and close your eyes. Don’t move until I tell you to, understand?” he asked picking a pure white lily. She nodded, not knowing what she was about to go through. Seeing her nod, Naraku stood back and made an strange an ancient hand sign, starting to chant an ancient spell.
Suddenly the small clearing lit up with a pure white light and was filled with a scream. As he continued to chant, Kagome’s creams only got louder, piercing the calm night air, making all small creatures scatter to a hiding place. The once purely white light soon took on a pinkish tint, then turned into a light red. It steadily darkened until it was the color of the richest blood, and then had black streaks of energy swirling around it as Naraku switched hand signs and started a different chant.
Once he was done, the red and black light receded back into Kagome’s body and she dropped to the ground, unconscious. Naraku walked over to her, eyes taking in her new form. She was now the perfect killing machine and the image of beauty and immortality. The spell he used was one he had been waiting to use on her for years now, an ancient and now forbidden art.
‘Ah my precious priestess, how much more beautiful you have become, and deadly. Once you prove yourself worthy, you’ll become my mate, just like I’ve always planned.’ thought Naraku as he picked her limp form up bridal style and carried her back inside.
He reached a room and set her down on the black silk sheets, covering her up. He pulled the white lily from inside the sleeves of his kimono and tucked it behind her ear, placing a soft kiss on her forehead. ‘Soon, little one, you will be mine.’
He walked out of the door, carefully shutting it behind him. Not soon after he had left, a soft red glow engulfed Kagome’s body, casting menacing shadows upon the walls. The once white lily glowed red for a moment, then returned to normal. The only thing it wasn’t normal, instead of the soft white petals, blood red ones with black streaks going down toward the center replaced them.
Naraku thought that the spell had gone perfectly, but what he didn’t know was that it had gone perfectly, wrong.

His silver hair swirled behind him, stray strands blowing against his pale skin, causing cold amber eyes to blink in an attempt to keep the hair out of them. He stood regally on his personal balcony that overlooked the landscape below. His home was settled on the side of a mountain that had been carved out to fit the humongous palace.
Just as he was about to retire to his room, a huge red glow filled the horizon, illuminating the entire landscape. He soon realized the that glow was an aura, and that it was incredibly strong and a bit evil. It was so strong that it rivaled even his own, and the thing was, it felt familiar. Though it was clearly demonic, when it touched his own, even from this distance, his senses tingled and the hairs on the back of his neck raised.
It was almost like the purification powers of a miko, but from a demonic aura. The aura died down, once again leaving the sky midnight once more. The aura disturbed him, not because it was there, but because it was almost as strong as his own. He rolled over the possibilities in his head and decided on a course of action.
‘This aura and it’s owner could pose a threat to this Sesshomaru and his position. I will set out tomorrow at dawn and track down this demon. If they indeed are a threat to me, then I shall simply dispose of them but, if they aren’t then I will try to gain them as an ally.’
It was highly out of character for him to willingly ask for an alliance with anyone, but Sesshomaru wasn’t stupid. As Taiyoukai of the West and ruler of the biggest and most prosperous territory, he had a lot of enemies. Other lords that wanted his land and position, females that wanted the title, rouges that wanted his land and position, and then the everyday idiots that just wanted him dead because they were jealous. Frankly it was a bothersome job, but somebody had to do it.
It was decided so he retired to his bedroom and climbed into his bed, entering a dreamless sleep, awaiting the sun to rise so he could head out. If only he knew what he was heading out to.
