Chapter 3

Debts

 

Kagome just stood there like a statue, unable to move, unable to breathe, and even worse unable to cry out as Inuyasha grew smaller and smaller until he disappeared completely from sight. How could he just walk away from me like that? She thought miserably.

Lying across her bed she counted the lines across her ceiling trying to keep herself from thinking about Inuyasha and the way things had ended between them. She tore her eyes from the ceiling, got up, opened her desk drawer and pulled out the Shikon no Tama. Was she ready to walk away from him herself, yet? Was the question now, she thought. And with a heavy heart, she tucked the Shikon no Tama up under her pillow, switched off the light, closed her eyes and soon both depression and exhaustion gave way to blackness and finally sleep.

"Inuyasha!" Miroku called out into the dark.

"Inuyasha!" Sango's voice echoed. The two had been searching for the hanyou ever since Kagome had went back through the bone eaters well, two days had past with very little luck. "I hope we find him, before he does anything rash, Miroku" Sango said "That fight he and Kagome had was pretty intense."

"Yea" agreed Miroku. "What do you think he's up to, anyway? I mean, he didn't... take the jewel, so...?" Miroku left off unsure of where he was going with this.

"Yea. I know what you mean, it seems odd to me too, that if the jewel is what he wanted, why he didn't take it is, well, It doesn't make sense." Sango responded thoughtfully.

"I just hope Kagome isn't in any danger." Said Miroku.

"Me too." Said Sango and she nodded.

Kagome woke up to light streaming in through her window and the shadow of a hanyou sitting on her window seat. Wait a minute, she thought groggily...A HANYOU SITTING ON MY WINDOW SEAT! Kagome almost screamed but luckily Inuyasha anticipated this response and quickly covered the girl's mouth before she let the whole neighborhood know he was there. As soon as he was sure she wouldn't get him caught he removed his hand from its position covering her mouth.

"Shut up, wench!" Inuyasha snapped. "The last thing I need is for you to start trouble again. I just came for the jewel. Now hand it over!" And once again Kagome couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"Why are you doing this?" She sobbed "Inuyasha, I thought..."

"Just shut up and give me the Jewel, don't make me hurt you, Damnit!" Inuyasha interrupted sharply.

"No." Kagome sobbed more "Why?" Why Inuyasha? You can't still want..."

"Damnit, Kagome give me the jewel!" his voice raised an octave but still not loud enough to disturb the household as he interrupted the girl again. "Please, don't make me use force." he added now calmly, too calmly. As he reached for her wrist to grasp it firmly, he held her while he wrapped the other clawed hand around her neck.

"Now, give me THE JEWEL!" He growled his grip tightening a little around both her neck and wrist.

Kagome searched Inuyasha's eyes praying to see something that wasn't there. This wasn't Inuyasha she kept telling herself as she fought for air against both her tears and the tightening constraint the hanyou had on her wind pipe.

"Inuyasha...please" she choked out. "You know, I can't..."

"You can and you will. You owe me, wench! How many times did I stick my neck out for you, you Bitch! " He growled more vehemently his grip on her throat becoming more threatening.

"I...I...Alright." She gasped still sobbing she pointed toward her pillow with her free hand. "It's over there." And with that Inuyasha dropped the pale quivering priestess to the ground. Claiming his trophy the demon Inuyasha grinned coldly down at Kagome.

"Did you really think I'd changed, wench? Are you really that naive?" he asked her but he must have already known the answer because when Kagome looked up he had already leapt outside and was racing across the lawn back to well.
