Chapter 3: Your Mission . . . Should You Choose to Accept it.

"Ms. Higarashi, is there anything else I can get you?" a kind old man walked into room 217 where Inuyasha was sleeping peacefully. Kagome hadn't left his side in nearly two days, and only slept for a half hour or so a day.

"No. Thank you." she smiled at him kindly. He walked over to Inuyasha's IV and checked all his cords and monitors before leaving the room.

Kagome yawned and looked at the clock, it was now noon time. She pulled out her math homework and got to work. Luckily she had nice friends who brought her notes and her assignments. Kagome's eyes drifted closed and she fell asleep; until a slight stirring woke her. She looked up to see 'Inuyasha' sitting upright smiling.

"Morning." she said brightly.

"Mornin'?" he repeated. "Afternoon." he smiled.

"I guess it is. How are you feeling?"

"Much better. These doctors are great aren't they?" Kagome just nodded. "Right . . . answers . . . Okay, so, I am Inuyasha it is lovely to meet you . . . again." he smiled, his eyes twinkling with complete happiness.

"So you've told me. But Inuyasha lived . . . I don't even know when. How can you be him? You are a human and you aren't old enough."

"Ah, ye of little faith. I am actually over five hundred years old, give twenty years or so." his smile never faded as he continued to explain. "I am a human . . . now. I am the same arogant, baka half-demon you have become aquainted with. I knew what was going to happen because you are going to go back in time and free me from my sleep in fifty years and we are going to hunt for the shikon no tama together and then when the jewel is complete I will ask you to be my mate, you will yell at me and call me an insensitive baka and dissappear out of my life forever. But that hasn't happened yet, so lets look on the bright side eh?" Kagome listend to Inuyasha talk of events still to come and her head began to spin.

"So, you are from the past, but in order to save you right now, I have to make sure and follow up on all of these events so that you and I can be seperated anyway?"

"You are quick." he said, "But I already knew that."

"What happens to this Shikon thing to make us have to hunt for it."

"You break it." he replied dully.

"Wait a second. What if I don't break it? What if I never go and save you?"

"Then I won't be here. I will have been pinned to the Gods Tree and eventually killed by Kaede or someone else I am sure."

"What if I save you, but then I just come back here?"

"You can't do that. It was a mistake for you to go back so early. Things are so fucked up now-"

"Well I am sorry I screwed up your past . . . present . . . urg whatever!"

"No, no, no. It is not you. It's just that, you have to go back and save me, and you have to destroy the Shikon no Tama, and you have to fall in love with me, and then leave me. Otherwise, I'll never have the strength to beat Naraku, and we'll die." he looked deeply into Kagome's eyes, "I would give up my life to save yours Kagome, you are the only one that gives me strength." Kagome felt her eyes become watery. That was quite possibly the sweetest thing she had ever heard, and she barely knew this guy.

"Okay. I'll do it. But, I don't know how, and I can't guarantee that I'll succeed."

"You don't have to worry. I know you will succeed. There will be bumps, and there will be problems, but everything will work out for the best. After all, I am here aren't I?"

"Hai. I guess."

"Well Mr. Tama, you are free to go." a short blonde nurse smiled from the doorway. "Just sign yourself out at the front desk, and make sure to take three of these every day. One with each meal." she instructed, handing him an orange perscription bottle. "There is enough there for a day but you'll have to go to the pharmacy with this full perscription okay?" Inuyasha nodded and she smiled. "Have a nice day."

"Thank you Ma'am. You too."

"Do you want me, well my mom, to drive you home? Are you okay?"

"Hai, I am peachy." Kagome walked with the boy to an apartment building.

"Well, thank you for walking me home." Inuyasha said as he opened the door to the lobby.

"No problem." Kagome responded distractedly.

"What is wrong?"

"Well, I still don't understand. If I went back to early. Would I have always gone back too early? So wouldn't you all ready know that?"

"I guess that makes sense. I can't explain it."

"Right. Sorry."

"No problem." Inuyasha smiled at her, his teeth a perfect white, and very straight. "Well see ya in the future . . . past."

"Hai. See ya."

"Just go through the well in about a year. You are fifteen right?" Kagome nodded. "Hai. A year. Bye."

The weeks went by and fall faded into winter, winter into spring, and finally, there was summer. Kagome hadn't seen the mysterious Inuyasha since the day he left the hospital. She often thought about him, and what he wanted her to do. She didn't know if she should listen to him. After all, she hadn't seen him since then, it couldn't be that important. Maybe he just didn't want to frighten me anymore than I already am. Kagome thought of reason, upon reason why not to go through with her mission. Then she thought of just as many reasons to go through with it. She asked her mother, who seemed to think that it was a wonderful idea. Kagome reasoned that her mother didn't really believe her, so she ignored her opinion. The summer ended and school began again; Kagome went back to her usual routine of a hundred activities and school work. Now she had a job too, so things were twice as straining. Thanksgiving was nearing and the snow was gently falling to the ground as Kagome walked home from school after practice. She felt an odd sensation in her stomach, and felt herself drawn home by an invisible force. She dropped her dance bag off on the porch and ran to the well-house. The feeling was telling her to jump. So jump she did.
