The Mending Soul
It was a beautiful spring day in the Feudal Era. All the woodland creatures were out basking in the warm sun. Even a certain Hanyou was enjoying himself. Inuyasha was in his favorite tree, watching Shippou play chase around the tree with Kagome. Inuyasha admired the two.
They had just finished a battle with Maguso, a horse demon, and most of the group was injured in one way or another. But Shippou, being Shippou, had wanted to play anyway. Kirara was still not well after the battle, so much to Inuyasha's displeasure, Kagome volunteered to play with the little runt. InuYasha couldn't get over this feeling that Kagome would make a wonderful mother one day. Maybe it was just his demon instincts, but he thought in the future she might be the mother of his pups. Naraku was dead and the all the Jewel Shards had yet to be found. The group was becoming somewhat separated with the marriage of Sango and Miroku. Kagome and Inuyasha were becoming closer and closer with every day they spent together.
"Oww," That brought Inuyasha out of his little daydream.
"Oi, watch what your doin' you little runt. Kagome's hurt enough already." Inuyasha bellowed at Shippou before he lept down from the tree to whack the kitsune square on the head.
"It's alright Inuyasha, I stumbled over a root from the tree." Kagome looked at Inuyasha with that look in her eyes.
Inuyasha saw her eyes, he'd seen those eyes before. The ones right before she said the word that triggered the rosary beads and sent him straight into the ground. 'Wait, I smell blood, lots of it,' he thought.
"Inu....yash...a" muttered Kagome, right before she fell onto the ground unconscious.
Kagome was bleeding alot along her back 'why hadn't he noticed it before? Damn him for daydreaming and not catching it sooner.' Inuyasha scooped Kagome into his arms and raced off toward Kaede's hut with Shippou following, crying, right behind him. When Inuyasha landed in front of the hut he rushed in through the door and went into the room Kaede used for the injured. Kaede looked up from a boiling pot and went to Kagome's side. She instructed Inuyasha to put her on a futon close to the fire to keep her warm from her loss of blood. Miroku and Sango chose that moment to enter the hut.
"Kagome!, Inuyasha what happened?" Sango cried.
Kaede pulled a curtain to separate the group from the futon Kagome was lying on, as Inuyasha explained what had happened.
"At least let me aide you in helping Kagome." Miroku didn't even make it to the curtain. Sango got Miroku with a slap that made all the others seem like kisses. It put the Monk in a daze for several hours.
"Damn fucking pervert, he will try anything to peek." Inuyasha was furious to say the least.
Kaede told them all that they should wait outside for her to finish tending to Kagome. Reluctantly Inuyasha complied and helped Sango drag the dazed monk outside with Shippou stilling crying, saying it was his fault Kagome was hurt.
"It wasn't your fault Shippou, Kagome was injured from our battle with Maguso." Sango hoped Shippou would realize this, but he didn't seem to understand.
Inuyasha listened from his tree to the conversation between the slayer and the kitsune. 'It wasn't Shippou's fault, it was his.' The hanyou had been busy with attacking Maguso and didn't get to Kagome in time to keep her from getting hit with the horse demon's tail spikes. Inuyasha cared for Kagome. He blamed himself for everything that happened to her, even with things that were not under his control.
The hanyou was still in his daze when he saw Kaede approaching. He let her get close to the tree before he spoke. "How is Kagome?"
Kaede looked up at the hanyou. "Kagome has lost alot of blood Inuyasha. I have done all that I am able to. She will need lots of rest before she will be able to travel again."
Inuyasha sighed. It was his fault that this happened to Kagome. He would stay here for as long as she needed to recover. He was sure the group would, too.
"How long will it take Kaede?" Inuyasha asked almost in a whisper. His ears were flat as paper on his head.
"She will require at least seven days rest to recuperate, ye may all go in and see her when she wakes." Kaede thought the hanyou was being extremely awkward, normally he would complain about waiting that long for Kagome to recover.

None of the group slept very much that night. Especially Inuyasha, he just couldn't stop blaming himself. Sango had come up to him and tried to explain to him that it wasn't his fault as she had with Shippou. He had told her that he wasn't a little kid like that damn fox was and stormed off to find a secluded tree somewhere. Sango had just sighed and went to find Miroku.

In the morning clouds were blocking the sun. Inuyasha could smell the rain about to come. They were all crowded into Kaede's hut sitting around the fire pit. Kagome was improving but she hadn't regained consciousness. Inuyasha was alone by herside, he had become very protective of her since she had passed out.
"Inuyasha, ye must eat something" said Kaede as she held out a bowl of stew.
Inuyasha accepted the bowl and just fiddled with the spoon in the stew. 'He would eat if Kagome would just wake up.' As if she had heard his thoughts Kagome began to stir and tried to open her eyes.
"Inu..yasha?" Kagome manages to say after regaining most of her senses.
The group had heard Kagome call out to Inuyasha. They came into the room to see a satisfied hanyou and a very tired Kagome.
"Welcome back Kagome." Shippou cried as he went to hug her.
Inuyasha was about to stop him when Kagome sat up and opened her arms to encircle the little kitsune. He could see that she was still in pain and broke the embrace soon after it had started. The fox seemed to understand and went off to tend to Kirara. Kaede had come in as well and soon was telling everyone to leave.
"NO, Inuyasha please, stay with me." Kagome cried as Inuyasha had begun to stand. He could do nothing but do as she wished, he wanted to please her as much as he could for the days to come.
"Very well child, I will let Inuyasha stay with thee and I shall be in the other room." Kaede turned and went off, leaving the pair alone.
Kagome looked at Inuyasha and laid back down closing her eyes. She felt completely safe with him next to her. He held out a bowl of stew he had in his hands and told her to be sure and eat as much as she could to get her strength back. After about 4 spoonfuls of stew she was extremely tired. She gave the stew back to Inuyasha and he devoured the rest of it.
When Inuyasha had finished with the rest of his stew he looked back at Kagome. Kami, she was beautiful. He wanted to take her as his mate but, not yet. She needed to have her strength back before they mated. Kagome was sleeping peacefully and he dared not wake her. Still, he couldn't stop himself from leaning down to her face. He wanted to feel those lips against his. He gently brushed his lips against hers and it sent him into a world of pleasure.
He was surprised when Kagome opened her lips to let his tongue enter into her mouth. So surprised he drew back instantly breaking the kiss. He looked down at Kagome about to say something when he realized she was still asleep. He quickly regained his senses and went to the corner of the room were he sat down and tried to get some sleep after what had just happened.
