THE MISTS OF THE SACRED FOREST

CHAPTER 1

Looking at Inuyasha by the soft glow of the campfire, Kagome couldn't help but wonder what he was thinking about. With Naraku quiet for now, their hunt for the jewel shards has been their main focus. It was almost easy for them lately.
It was a beautiful night and she didn't want to spoil it by asking Inuyasha what was on his mind. He'd just tell her to stop being dumb anyway. Kagome turned her focus on the stars. They had started the night's fire early but almost didn't need it now. It was a warm night and you could almost smell the oncoming rain. They may have to take cover in the woods tonight.

"You sure are thinking hard," came Miroku's voice.

Miroku was sitting on the grass beside her. Songo and Shippo had already gone to sleep. Shippo was curled up in a little ball next to Kilala. Songo slept protectively beside them both.
Kagome turned back to Miroku, who was patiently awaiting her reply.

"I can't help but think things have just been too easy lately. Even with Naraku in hiding, it shouldn't be this uneventful." Kagome said.

Miroku thought about this for a moment. The moon was shining so brightly that Kagome could clearly see his face turn thoughtful to skeptical.

"I don't think we should dismiss the idea of a little down time. We can't let our guards down but hasn't it been nice not having to fight for our lives every second of every day?"

Kagome had to admit, it had been nice to have a little down time. With Naraku injured and in hiding, she'd been thinking about spending a few days at home. She hadn't seen her family in a while and she knew she must have a mountain of homework to catch up on. Not to mention the fact that she was really looking forward to sleeping in a real bed for a couple of days.
That was it. She'd made up her mind. Tommorow she would head back to the well.
She glanced over at Inuyasha who was watching the fire across from her. Telling him wasn't going to be fun. Well, she would worry about that tommorow. Right now she was enjoying the beautiful night sky. A large cloud was starting to drift toward the moon creating a haze in the sky that reminded Kagome of mist on a pond.

"Ya know, Miroku. Your right. I still say something's up, though."

A clap of thunder shook the hilltop they were sitting upon.

"Inuyasha, don't you think we should take cover?" Kagome asked.

"Why? That storms no where near here. Women. Always fast to jump at the first sign you might get wet."

"NO! I just don't want to have to smell wet dog all night!" Kagome yelled, getting up from her spot.

"OH! YEAH?!" Inuyasha shouted jumping up and into Kagome's face.

"SSHHH!!! You're going to wake up Shippo and Songo!" Miroku scolded.

"It's too nice a night to fight with you anyway," Kagome said under her breath.

With that, it started to rain.
