Chapter 13
Last Hope
It was a bright afternoon when Jaken knocked at Sesshomaru's door, “S-Shesshomaru-sama,” the toad stuttered, “You have v-visitors…”
Shesshomaru was suddenly at the door, his nose having alerted him of filthy blood around the castle.
“Inuyasha…” he whispered, watching as the hanyou tore through the maids and members of the staff, pushed everything in his way, stopping before his brother, an unconscious woman in his arms.
`The ningen wench he travels with?' Sesshomaru asked himself. “What do you want, hanyou?”
“I need your help,” Inuyasha said simply.
At this, the lord of the Western lands smirked. “You are asking for my help? You, a filthy - ”
“Kagome-chan!” Rin interrupted him. She had run all the way from her room, upstairs, to see who had caused all this noise. When she saw Inuyasha carrying Kagome, she instantly panicked. She ran to the girl, turning her face to look at her with her tiny hands, staring at her bruised face, her eyes filling with tears.
“Sesshomaru,” Inuyasha sneered, “I don't have time for any of this! I need you to save Kagome before it's too late! You have to do it, now!”
Sesshomaru thought for an instant, then stared at the ningen girl weeping, almost lovingly. `That wench saved Rin's life…' he thought, remembering that time when Kagome had saved Rin from Kohaku.
Silently, he nodded to Inuyasha, who laid Kagome down on the floor gently, staring at her, almost scared that Sesshomaru would hurt her. He couldn't help but flinch when the Lord of the Western Lands drew Tenseiga.
Sesshomaru waited about a minute for the little green demons to appear, but they didn't. It was too late.
“Inuyasha,” he started, and the said hanyou blanched. “This woman's time is gone.”
“No…” Inuyasha whispered, faintly hearing Sango, Kirara and Miroku catching up to them. “No!” he said, his tone a little higher, “NO!”
Sesshomaru just looked at his adopted daughter lovingly, as she cried, holding the woman she looked upon as a sister. “Kagome-chan…” she sobbed, every tear breaking Sesshomaru's heart silently.
“Leave,” he said simply.
Inuyasha nodded slowly, “Thank you, oniisan,” he whispered brokenly.
Sesshomaru's eyes widened. `Oniisan?' Since when did Inuyasha recognize him as a brother? Maybe losing his mate had softened him?
The hanyou walked out slowly, carrying Kagome, holding her tightly against his chest. “Inuyasha,” Sesshomaru called.
“Hai?” Inuyasha answered, turning back to him.
“Would you do anything to have her back, otouto?”
“Hai…” the hanyou repeated, stunned that his brother had called him by his name, and then otouto…
The Lord of the Western Lands swallowed hard. “I'll help you,” he said coldly.
“How?” Inuyasha asked suspiciously.
“We have to defeat Naraku,” he started, and Inuyasha frowned. “The shikon shards have always belonged to you and your bitch, and I have never wanted them,” he went on, his voice icy, “I want to kill Naraku for messing with me, so I'll be doing this anyway.”
Inuyasha smiled lightly.
“Therefore, know that I am not doing this for you. I shall save the wench for Rin's sake, I after all owe Kagome her life. After we collect the shards, it is your choice to revive her if you want to.”
“Thank you,” Inuyasha said, his eyes moistening slightly.
“Get ready. We're leaving first thing tomorrow,” Sesshomaru simply answered. I'll have Miyuki prepare rooms for you.

A few miles away, a wolf demon searched eagerly for his beloved's scent.
“No!” he raged, “She can't be dead!”
“Koga, wait! You're going too fast!!” Ginta yelled after him.
“Just shut up and hurry!” he screamed.
`Fuck! This is all my fault!'
It took them a while, but they finally got to mount Hijirai, where the scent of Kagome's blood what the strongest. It took him an instant to get to the bottom of the cliff, where he sniffed the air deeply, his eyes widening.
It reeked of death.
“Kagome…” he whispered, “No…” Rage instantly filled his senses at the thought that the stupid mutt hadn't been able to save her. He followed his scent, growling as he noticed it was moving in the direction of the Lord of the Western Land's castle. “Sesshomaru…” he sneered. “Fuck, what are they planning together?!”
He waited a few minuted for Ginta and Hakkaku to catch up to him, and when finally they fell exhausted at his feet, he said gravely, his eyes closed in pain, “Kagome is…dead. I need to find Inu-kurro to know what happened,” he clenched his teeth at this, “and kill him.”
His two friends were wide eyed at the news of Kagome's death. They had always looked upon her as a sister. “Kagome-sama…dead?” Ginta uttered.
“Hai,” the wolf prince nodded, “I'm leaving you here, go back to the pack, behind the mountains, and tell them I might never come back. If I do, it means I killed Inuyasha and Sesshomaru, and if it doesn't, it means I perished trying.”
Both started to protest, but Koga silenced them with a growl. “Go. Now!”
They exchanged nervous glances, sighing, then reluctantly turned their backs to their leader, and friend, and ran.
Koga looked around one last time, before clenching his fists and growling in a low, deadly voice, “I'll get you for this, Inuyasha!”

The demon slayer was sitting next to the futon Inuyasha had laid Kagome on, holding her hand, staring at the once so lively face. “Kagome-chan…” she whispered, trailing her fingers over the girl's cheek.
Inuyasha had agreed to let Sango clean her wounds and bathe her. The girl from the future would stay in her room until they defeated Naraku and came back. Sesshomaru could preserve her body as it was for a while.
She blamed herself for her friend's death. If she had just followed her, she might have saved her…
“Oi,” she heard the hanyou say from outside the door, “You done in there?”
“Damn it, Inuyasha!” she growled.
“Keh,” came the answer.
She knew he was just anxious to stay with her, but she wanted time with her friend, too!
“Hurry!” he growled again.
“Alright, Inuyasha,” she sighed, getting up and watching as he walked in, ignoring her completely and taking the girl in his arms.
Sango stared at him sadly, almost pitifully, then walked out. She went through the hall, looking for Miroku. He was apparently in his own room.
“Miroku?” Sango said softly as she knocked on the door.
“Hai,” he greeted with a warm smile, opening the door.
The girl only looked in his eyes, and, her resolve breaking, she threw herself in his arms as she sobbed, grabbing his robes and clutching them tightly.
“Sango…” the houshi whispered, stroking her hair.
“Sh-She was my b-best friend, Miroku…M-My best friend!” the girl stuttered.
“Shh,” he soothed, pulling her in his room with him and picking her up to lie her on his futon. She made a sound of protest but he silenced her with a finger to her lips. “Sleep,” he ordered softly.
She nodded, watching as he took off his robes, leaving on one layer of clothing as he slipped under the covers with her.
Sango pressed herself to his body, sobbing still as he circled her waist with his arms, resting his chin on her head. “Shh…”

Inuyasha had Tucked Kagome in safely, not even realizing how ridiculous that was… He held her hand in his, noticing how cold it was. He swallowed hard, dipping his head to inhale her intoxicating scent once more. `Vanilla and spring flowers…' he thought. She smelled so good…
“Ai Shiteru, Kagome…” he whispered, getting up and staring at her once more before walking out to get Sesshomaru.
“Ai Shiteru, Inuyasha…” was the whisper he heard back as his eyes widened. “Kagome?!” he screamed, turning to the futon again. What he saw made his eyes water and his heart leap.

OK…First of all, I have to apologize, VERY VERY much for the late update and the short chapter. I know I said in the last chapter that a lot of reviews made me write faster, but I hade the worst case of WB on this story, Bodyguard and More Than You Think…
I'm already pretty surprised I finished this chapter this weekend, and that it's so sweet and fluffy (MirokuxSango) with the way my love life is going… ::rolls eyes:: but anyways, you don't care about all this do you?
Plus, life is really hectic these few weeks, and I really have been trying my best.
Another apology is for the cliff hanger ending… I just had this idea and had to put it in… I think I might update by the end of next week because I'm having a lot of holidays… No school Thursday or Friday XD.
For More Than You Think readers, I'm so very sorry for the long wait, but this chapter's being a bitch…
And for Bodyguard readers, I have no clue what to do with the next chap… I finished it, but I think it sucks and I don't like how things are going. I hadn't planned this but I wrote it anyways…
I promise I'll try updating as soon as I can, with life being hectic and all…
I can't believe I wrote that much, and for people who actually read ANs…well I'm sorry for blabbering…
