InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The Offering ❯ Mer...Maids...? ( Chapter 8 )

I am counting myself fortunate. Part of the reason I stopped writing before was because there was no longer any allure. I was extremely self-conscious of my writing skill and that completely killed my muse. Fortunately my muse has risen from the dead with a vengeance and I am now confident that, though I’m not the best author, and not as skilled as I could be, I am decent. Decent is enough for me, and the fact that I had a poem recently published has a lot to do with it, I think.
!!!*********!!! I DO REALIZE THAT BEFORE I WAS BEING IMMATURE. I realize my reaction to that one girl was ridiculous, and I’m sorry for filling my AN with tons of crap about her. However I believe in learning from the past so I won’t repost those chapters without my rants against Meaghan. ^^’
********CHAPTER 8********
Kagome was under the water and couldn’t resurface. Something was holding her down but all she felt was something soft against her legs. It allowed her to move but wouldn’t set her free. Her struggling legs were wrapped and then rewrapped again and again. All she was succeeding in doing was quickening her own death.
She couldn’t think, she couldn’t breath, all that was left in her was the animalistic desire to survive, to surface and cool the terrible fire in her lungs with air. A beautiful woman came into her view then. Her hair was the color of fire, her face round and a smile on her very pink lips. Her eyes were the green of the forest trees and the smile she gave Kagome was one that made her think she’d just met an angel.
Had she lost consciousness and this woman was no more than a dream created by her brain? Or had she died? The woman seemed to laugh but then she moved forward and kissed Kagome full on the lips.
Kagome’s mouth opened in shock and the woman’s tongue delved inside. She’d never been kissed by a woman, ever. Never thought to be either. Her shock was so great that it took her a second to realize she could breathe when the woman pulled away from her.
She was breathing, underwater! How could that possibly be? That’s when she noticed that the woman wasn’t really a simple woman. Her skin was silvery in color and she had not legs, but a fin. A mermaid? How in the-? Weren’t there enough strange things in the world already? Now she was staring at a mermaid, a mermaid! ‘Great, a mermaid! What next? Is Bigfoot going to hop down the road with the Easter bunny and Santa?’ Kagome thought sarcastically. She should’ve figured though, after all, there were hundreds of strange things in this time. Not the least of which included youkai.
“You’re very pretty, and if you were not a gift, I would doubtlessly keep you. Alas that isn’t your fate is it? Though that hasn’t stopped me before... Sad such a waist to have you on the surface.” The mermaid was speaking to her... and Kagome could hear her. Her voice was soft and the tinge of regret wasn’t lost on Kagome.
“Fiona! Cease playing with the youkai woman, we’ve work to do!” The mermaid looked away from Kagome only momentarily to issue that order. Something in her voice reminded her of the cool confidence Sesshoumaru possessed when issuing a command. She fully expected to be obeyed.
“Yes, My Queen.” Fiona swam into view then.
“Oooh, she’s so pretty!” This mermaid was different. Her face was angelic too, but her hair was the blue of the purest sky, and her eyes the color of an orange sunset. Her skin was pale but definitely peach in color. “Are you sure we can’t keep her My Queen? The Lord is not aware that we are to offer her, so keeping her wouldn’t hurt would it?”
“It would.” The silver mermaid snapped. “Did you already forget the power he wields? Should we offend him we will not survive his wrath.”
“WHAT are you talking about?” Kagome was surprised her voice was so strong, or even that she could speak. She wasn’t a mermaid and had worried that her voice wouldn’t be heard in the water as these mermaid’s were. Still she had to say something. Offering what? Keep her WHAT? She was seriously getting tired of being clueless as to her own fate.
“Poor dear. Likely he hasn’t told her yet. Well we won’t tell you Pretty One. The plans the Great White Lord has for you are his own. We shan’t risk offending him in anyway. We’ll have enough to deal with if he discovers you missing before we’re through.” The silver one, the Queen said with a mischievous smile on her angelic face.
“Come Fiona, we’ve a need to give her over to the Elders.” The Queen took hold of Kagome’s right hand, and the Fiona woman took her left.
“Oooh, she’s so pretty though! She might prove too tempting for them don’t you think? They’ll want to keep her too!” Fiona whined clearly wanting her way in this.
“WHY would you keep me? What are you talking about?!” Kagome didn’t like this, being tossed around as she’d been already, the idea of continuingly being subjected to more and more “people” thinking of her as a possession was doing little to cool her head. And this talk of being an offering to Sesshoumaru? Hadn’t Inuyasha already DONE that? How many times did Sesshoumaru deserve having her “offered” to him?!
“Shush, little human.” The Queen put her finger to Kagome’s mouth. “The Elders will likely explain all to you. They have a way of blabbering. Though they might be a bit more cautious, after all you won’t be kept.” She looked to Fiona then. “Come, time to go home with our new little friend.”
Fiona nodded eagerly and the next thing Kagome knew the water around her spun, then cooled... a lot. Fiona and her Queen’s smiling faces were the only constants, and then the bindings on her feet were gone, and instead of two mermaids, she was surrounded by probably a dozen of them. None of them looking older than 24 years old.
Behind them was doubtlessly the ocean, there were fish swimming around the mermaids as though they had nothing to fear from them. Not only that but what Kagome suspected was the continents’ edgy rock was to her right. Briefly she considered swimming up and trying to get to the surface, but just as quickly decided that wouldn’t work. These mermaids had fins and would catch her easily. Not only that, but she was completely naked.
“Elder Kionte?” The Queen looked behind her and a green haired woman swam up. “Elder” didn’t seem an appropriate title for a woman who looked to be about 18 years old herself.
“Yes My Queen.” Kionte looked Kagome up and down and Kagome felt self-conscious in her nudity, especially with so many beautiful mermaids surrounding her. “This is the woman? My I will have to say the Great White Lord chooses well. Were it only that we’d discovered you first eh?”
“I think her hair would turn to be a color between red and pink, don’t you think?” The Queen asked the woman she’d called “Elder Kionte”.
“Hmm... Maybe blue-green? I don’t think she has the fire in her that strong. Though she looks like she might at this moment. Maybe we should stop talking about her as though she isn’t here?” Kionte laughed happily, the sound softening Kagome’s mood instantly.
A strange spell she was sure. Weren’t mermaids supposed to be ethereal creatures with magic in every scale? They had lured many a man to their deaths, or so stories had said.
She wouldn’t be lured that easily. “Tell me what’s going on! I don’t understand why you all keep saying things like “keep her” and “discovered you first” in reference to me!”
Kionte smiled broadly and there were several giggles from the others around her. Kagome could see nothing funny about this situation at ALL. It wasn’t enough that she had to deal with Lord Arrogant, but now she had over a dozen giggling mermaids all around her.
“Only the Queen can bread a child, little human.” Kionte explained simply. “And she only breeds one, the one who will succeed her. The rest of us were once upon the land ourselves. Most of us no longer remember that time clearly though. We were considering turning you, keeping you. Such a pretty thing as you is wasted on land.” She sighed, as if she truly did regret giving her back.
“We’ll keep a part of her though.” the Queen said quietly and Kagome noticed that Kionte’s head snapped in the Queen’s direction instantly. So did everyone else’s.
Fiona was the one who spoke. Apparently the question that was on all of their minds. “Truly, My Queen? You are not jesting with us?”
When the Queen shook her head smiling the other mermaids rejoiced. Kagome would’ve begun sweating if she wasn’t under cold water, she was sure. Keep a part of her? What the hell did that mean? Were they going to remove one of her fingers or something?
The Queen noticed Kagome’s obvious distress. “Oh don’t worry dear. You won’t even recognize it’s missing. As it’s already here.”
She looked back to the other mermaids. “Mion! You have it?”
Mion, who’s hair was a very pale pink nodded as she came closer. “Yes My Queen.” She handed a small silver object to the Queen, who then looked back towards Kagome.
“A problem with us you know, little human. Is that your kind hunts us. Vigorously. A small number suspect our secret. We hold it from them, for they are too large in number already. We can not reveal our secret to them without finding our waters poisoned when they populate too great a number.
“I’m going to feed this to you, little human. It will give you a gift, or a curse, depending upon your view. However we owe the Great White Lord this much and more. He saved us from death, and now we give him this.” The Queen held the silver bit up to Kagome’s mouth. It was small, and, Kagome was sure she wouldn’t have to even chew to swallow the thing.
However she wasn’t getting whole-truths, and worried just what that little silver thing would do to her. She shook her head violently and turned her face away. “Little human, you have to eat this.”
Kagome looked back at the silver mermaid but kept her face averted. “I don’t have to do anything! Least of all eat something that could “a gift or a curse.” I wont’ eat it!”
The Queen’s eyes narrowed and she looked as though she was fighting an inner battle. “So then, tell me human, does the idea of eternal life not tempt you?”
Kagome’s eyes widened. A story she’d heard as a child surfaced in her head. That a mermaid’s flesh could bring immortality. It fit with the circumstances quiet cleanly. However if that small bit of something held up by the Queen was indeed a mermaid’s flesh, then it had to be the flesh of their Queen. She was the only silver mermaid, and the bit in her hand definitely matched her skin-tone.
Eternal life, though? And as a “gift” for Sesshoumaru, they probably expected her to stay under his rule. Though to what end? Why would they offer Sesshoumaru her for eternity? “I won’t be staying with Sesshoumaru forever, so you’re gift would be wasted.”
The Queen’s eyes narrowed even more. At that moment she looked so similar to Sesshoumaru they could’ve been related. Clearly she expected her wishes turned into orders that everyone obeyed.
“I didn’t expect you to want it,” Kionte said smiling, which caused the Queen to frown fractionally. “I’ve been watching her, more than you even My Queen. She isn’t greedy, and has no clue what The Great White Lord wants.”
She then swam up closer to Kagome and held her face in both of her cold hands. “We’ll force-feed you, tiny human. If that is what becomes necessary. You will eat it, and there is nothing you can say, or do about it.” she smiled softly as though she weren’t threatening Kagome in anyway.
Kagome’s anger rose, she couldn’t do anything, and she knew it! It was getting really tiresome being helpless to stop her own fate. She wanted some control, some say in what happened in her own damn life!
An idea emerged, a small hope of thwarting their plans. It was a small chance but she had to try something. “Fine!” she snapped and took the small bit of what she suspected was flesh from the Queen.
Kagome popped it into her mouth, and quickly maneuvered it under her tongue. She swallowed the water that was in her mouth then.
The Queen was far from convinced though. The easy compliance from the human in front of her didn’t sit well with her. “Open your mouth.” She ordered. Kagome did so. “Move your tongue up to the roof of your mouth. Sorry but we can’t take any chances. Sesshoumaru will be furious when he finds you’re gone. And more so if nothing was accomplished by your being here.”
Kagome snapped her mouth shut. “One more chance, swallow it or we’ll force-feed it to you.”
The voice was Kionte’s, but Kagome had closed her eyes and didn’t see her face. Despair was pulling at her. Immortality would be terrible. She had wanted to live a normal life one day, have children and raise a family. If she took what they were forcing her to, those dreams would die. She wouldn’t be able to have children who would die long before she did, and she would eventually have to face the prospect of time. Would time end? What would happen 600, 700, 10,000 years from now? She’d be alive to see it all, unless she took her own life.
Her throat worked convulsively, she didn’t have a choice, she would be immortal now. They wouldn’t let her leave here without taking from them their “gift”, their “curse”.
Kagome swallowed the piece of what was probably flesh, and opened her mouth. Moving her tongue around to prove to the mermaids watching that she’d done what they’d wanted.
A second later her stomach convulsed, and she doubled over in pain. She cried out for Inuyasha, where was he now? Why wasn’t he here to help her stop this fate?
White hot spots swam in her vision and she realized she wasn’t far from unconsciousness. She let it take her, grateful for even a moments respite. Her fate was sealed now, she’d live on forever and forever would her life be empty.

!!!! IMPORTANT QUESTION !!!! Okay, here’s the thing mah dear reviewers/readers. I want to know what would you have me do? There will eventually be a rape scene. I could just not include it in the chapter I post to keep the weaker-spirited people from being upset, and just idly mention that there was rape at that point, then have anyone who wants the full chapter ask via email. OR I could just put it in and hope no one cries too loudly? I don’t know, give me your suggestions!
