CHAPTER 8
Sesshomaru laid awake in his bed. He wasn't tired, he didn't need to sleep. It was a few hours before dawn, and his head was racing. He was excited that he was going to spend time with Kagome, and happy to be sparring with such a worthy opponent. But he couldn't help but be worried, he and Miroku had spoken well past sunset the previous evening. He couldn't believe all the horrible things that Kagome had faced in the sixteen years he hadn't seen her. Sesshomaru continued to look at the ceiling of his room while the conversation he and Miroku had replayed in his mind.
***Flasback***
"She was taken by force..."
"Force?"
"Hai."
"By whom?"
"Nobody knows, not even Kagome."
"I mean no disrespect, but how does one not know something like that?"
"It's complicated."
"How so?"
"Please Seshomaru, you are my friend, but please do not ask any more questions regarding the matter, please."
***End Flashback***
Sesshomaru turned on his side, he was so angry and yet he felt guilty. He was angry - angry at what happened to Kagome - angry at himself for pushing his friend to speak about such personal information. And then there was the guilt - the guilt of not being there to protect Kagome. He knew it sounded stupid, but in those four months as a young teen, he really felt a connection with the baby. He held her often, when his stupid hanyou of a brother would do something to make her cry. Kagome's parents died when she was a mere infant. She had cone to live with Mushin, her uncle, and his family.
Miroku was very protective of her - almost like a big brother - but the small child ran to Sesshomaru more than her adoptive brother. Neither he nor Miroku understood it - but if it kept her content, they were happy. Sesshomaru smiled to himself remembering the times he held Kagome in his arms. She would nuzzle into the crook of his neck and place a small arm around his shoulder to play with his hair. Normally he wouldn't be bothered with any small children, especially ningen children, but there was something about her. He was drawn to her, and she to him, and there were no explainations - it just was. Sesshomaru closed his eyes and let out a deep sigh. He tried to continue envisioning the beautiful woman as the small girl he once knew, but after what Miroku told him, dark thoughts kept popping into his head. He could visually replay what happened to the girl as he listened to Miroku's words in hi head.
***Flashback***
"Please Sesshomaru, you are my friend, but please do not ask more questions regarding the matter, please."
"Miroku, I'm sorry, and for reasons I can't explain, I need to know what happened to her. Please tell me everything that happened to her."
Miroku stared at his friend for a few moments. After a couple of deep breaths her let out a deep sigh and hand his hand nervously through his midnight hair.
"Well, I really don't know where to begin."
"How about the day I left."
"The day you left? OK, um... let me think - oh - ok I remember being mad at you for leaving but I understood. Kagome however seemed to miss you. She didn't stop crying for weeks. My father even called on healers thinking that she was ill, but nothing was physically wrong with her. After the crying stopped, she and I fell into a routine. I would take her everywhere with me. To the temple for learning, even to training. She would sit so still and quiet, her big blue eyes just drinking everything in."
"Kagome was about three or four summers when I met and fell in love with Sango. To me she was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. She came from a family of demon slayers from the southern lands. Her family had been killed and she was traveling alone. My father offered her a position as a teacher for Kagome in exchange for room and board. We were married two weeks later. Sango trained Kagome in many styles of fighting. They practiced hard everyday, when Kagome was six years she could fight as well if not better than fifteen year old boys."
"Sango an I had begun starting our family, and my parents passed away after a long battle with illness. It was hard for Kagome to accept it. They were the only parents she knew. With me being busy running this place and Sango busy raising our babies, Kagome began to feel left out and unwanted. She fell into a depression. I didn't know what to do, but I knew she needed to go somewhere like a dojo or something, and thats when I remembered an old family friend."
"Master Myoga was his name, as I am sure you know him, he's the best warrior trainer to both humans and demons. I wrote to him explaining the situation with Kagome and how experienced she was with many fighting styles. I told him how she was only six and could easily take down a man, maybe even two. Intrigued, Master Myoga and his wife Tsubuki came to the retreat. Tsubuki was able to bring Kagome out of her depression, by getting her involved with training again. Master Myoga was so impressed with her skills that he invited Kagome to his dojo. There was a small group of girls that Tsubuki trained. Kagome agreed to go."
" She spent four years with Tsubuki and excelled at everything she had been taught. She out skilled her sensei. When Tsubuki realized what a skilled warrior Kagome was, she sent for her husband, who was teaching at his elite dojo on the continent. Master Myoga returned to find a ten year old girl who was more skilled than many of the men he was currently training. He decided right there and then, that Kagome would be the first female ever to train at his dojo on the continent, so off she went again. And again she surpassed all of the students there, most of them full grown men, and a few demons."
"Three years had passed, and she moved up to the elite of the elite. Their last exam would be gruesome. The four chosen would fight to the death until only one remained. Kagome was not scared, not at all. But the men were. It was then that Kagome's life got even harder. The night before the exam - we believe - three other students from the dojo snuck into her room. There was speculation that her dinner had been drugged, otherwise she would have heard the intruders and fought them off. I don't know the exact details, but from what we've been told, they gagged her, tied her to her bed and beat her."
"Thats when they took her by force. They left her there. She didn't show up for the exam and was immediately disqualified. The remaining fighters fought until only one was left alive. It wasn't until the exam was well over when she was found. Master Myoga went looking for her, angry that she didn't show up. He was so horrified by what he found, he went crazy. Since none of the students confessed to what happened to Kagome, he closed down his dojo and vowed to never teach again - Kagome was sent back to us."
"She was beaten so bad, we could barely recognize her. It wasn't until a few months had passed, and her wounds had healed, that anyone realized she was with child. She felt so betrayed, so used and so unclean. She cried knowing no man would ever love her now, she cried because she didn't understand why anyone would do that to her. A few more months passed and the baby known as Rin was born, however it was clear st birth that the infant was ill. We knew Rin wouldn't live for long, she eight months old when she passed on."
"Kagome never completely got over her loss, but she put on an emotionless mask and kept living. She would spar with Sango when possible, the rest of the time she'd ride horses or help with the children. A year later, Sango gave birth to Kanna and Sango passed on. Kagome nearly lost her mind, she couldn't understand why so many people she loved so dearly died. It was then that she decided to take over caring for my children. I told her it was not neceassary, that I'd get a wet nurse and nannies, but she insisted, and now here she is, eighteen years old, completely untrusting of men, and totally lost."
***End Flashback***
Sesshomaru opened his eyes. Dawn was peeking around the horizion, he got up and started to prepare for his sparring session with Kagome. His head hurt from all the things Miroku had told him. One thing bothered him the most, how Miroku referred to her as being lost. Sesshomaru put on his armor, grabbed his swords, and stepped out into the newly awakening day. "Don't worry Kagome, I will help you find your way back" he told no one as he headed towards the Goshinboku tree.
A/N: Well there it was as promised. The next chapter shouldn't be too long, but I probably won't be able to get it out for a week. Thanks again for all the reviews. XD
