Chapter Seven

The Shattered Soul Part III

 

Sorano walked into the room and smiled. Of course she chose the right room. After all she had been sensing his youki since she walked into the other room. Sorano smiled as Eugene turned in his chair and looked at her.

 

“I knew that you would find my office right away,” Eugene smiled as he stood up and walked more into the light. What Sorano saw made her gasp.

 

“Oh Poppy,” Sorano walked forward and cupped his cheek, “Why do you still carry those scars?”

 

Eugene gently pulled Sorano's hand away from his face and smiled at her, “I will carry these scars until the day that I leave this world for the next.”

 

“But Poppy I could…”

 

“No Sorano my child I wouldn't ask that of you.”

 

“But it was because of me that you have those scars to begin with.”

 

“And that is why I will never have you rid me of them.”

 

Sorano gasped as she stepped back, “So you want to always remember that because of me you lost your good looks. You want to remember the night that you were almost killed because of me. You want…” Sorano was silenced by Eugene's finger gently covering her mouth.

 

“I want to keep these scars because they are what connect me to you. They are here to remind us of mistakes we both made. These scars are what connect me to you and I never want that connection to be broken. Now give your Poppy a hug.”

 

Sorano smiled slightly and hugged the large youkai tightly. Eugene wrapped his arms around Sorano and hugged her back. “I missed you kiddo.”

 

Sorano rested her cheek against his massive chest and sighed. Now I feel safe. I feel like nothing in the world could ever hurt me. This is how I feel with Sesshomaru. Sorano felt herself blush slightly as she stated, “I have missed you too Poppy. Three years is a long time.”

 

Eugene released Sorano and gestured to a chair that was in front of his desk. Sorano walked over to the chair and sat down as Eugene walked back around his desk and sat down. Sorano took that time to look around his office. The wall to her left was lined with televisions that were connected to security cameras on the floor. Almost every inch of the club was visible from his office. And the wall to her right was book shelves lines with books, texts, and scrolls. Eugene was a mountain of information and that was what brought Sorano there.

 

“Now young lady what have you been up to these past three years?”

 

Sorano turned her attention back to Eugene and sighed, “As much as I would love to tell you about everything I have been doing and I know you would love that information but I can't talk about that right now. I am in need of information myself and it can not wait.”

 

Eugene cocked an eyebrow and leaned forward in his chair, “Well then my dear?”

 

Sorano crossed her legs and laid her hands in her lap, “This club is a major hot spot for youkai gatherings and I know that you know about everything that happens in this club,” Eugene smiled and Sorano continued, “I need to know about a youkai that is called Mystic.”

 

Eugene's eyebrow twitched slightly but other then that his face still held his normal smile, “What is it that you need to know?”

 

Sorano glared at Eugene. He was playing games with her. He wanted to know what she knew and to see if he could learn anything from her, “We're not playing this game Poppy. You know full well that I can not tell you anything about an active case…”

 

“That never stopped you before.”

 

Sorano growled as she continued, “Well this time is different. This case is deemed highly classified and as much as I adore you Poppy I can't tell you what I know.”

 

“Well then I can't tell you what I know.”

 

“What?!”

 

“This is a two way street Sorano. I tell you and you tell me. That is the way it has always been and…”

 

“I have nothing to tell you! Why else would I be here on my third day back to Japan?!”

 

“You mean to tell me that the great and all powerful United Alliance knows nothing about the youkai Mystic?”

 

Sorano sighed. She was afraid of this. I just hope Kaeda doesn't fire me for this. “We don't really know anything about him. Everything that our people have tried to get him has failed. That is why Sage is being brought in. They need us and I mean all of us to find a way to bring him in. We don't even know what kind of youkai he is.”

 

Eugene leaned back into his chair and stared at Sorano. After a few minutes Eugene sighed and ran a hand through his hair, “Normally I wouldn't do this but you are too darn cute. Mystic is not someone to mess with. He has been to the club a few times and every time he is here I end up needing to have more security on then normal.”

 

Sorano knitted her eyebrows, “Why is that? Does he start fights?”

 

“Fights I could handle. His youki I could handle. But what he does it… well it confuses me.”

 

Sorano laughed, “Confuses you? The great Bear Youkai Eugene is confused.”

 

Eugene growled as he slammed his fist down hard on the table. Sorano didn't even flinch. “I am confused not by him but by his motives.”

 

“Motives? Poppy what does he do that gets you this angry?”

 

Eugene sighed and ran his hand through his hair again, “He comes into the club really late at night. He is always by himself. He comes in and looks for teenage girls.” Sorano was about to interrupt but Eugene just felt up his hand, “Let me finish,” Sorano nodded, “He finds a young girl and talks to her for a few minutes and then buys her a drink. After the drink he asks her to dance and then the weird thing is… he thanks them for the dance and moves on. He ends up doing it to about ten to fifteen girls. Nothing happens to the girls but he has been coming in more regularly.”

 

Sorano gasped. Wait a minute. He comes in and looks to pick up a girl. He talks with them, buys them a drink, dances with them and then leaves them alone. And he does this to a lot of girls a night. “Poppy what do the girls look like?”

 

Eugene tilted his head to the side, “They are all about Rin's age I think. But they are all Asian.”

 

“I figured as much. We are in Japan.”

 

Eugene shook his head, “I get a lot of people in here. After all this is the place that gave birth to the hit rock band The Sage. I get girls in here of all nationalities. But he is just after the Asian ones. I don't even think he looks at the others.”

 

“Wait a minute. A friend of mine said at lunch today that the youkai that have been attacking aren't really attacking. It's more like they are looking for something. What if the something is someone? What if Mystic is looking for a young female girl.”

 

“What could a youkai with his level of youki want with a young girl? I mean if it was sex well then he could have had any one of the girls that he danced with. They all seemed really into him when they were dancing.”

 

“Poppy Mystic has been controlling the wasp youkai that have been attacking people in the neutral zones. They even tried to attack the school today. Once they went after Rin I lost it and killed them all. What if the wasps know what they are looking for and they were looking for Rin?!”

 

Eugene shook his head, “I don't think it was Rin that they were after. I heard from a very reliable source that they are looking for someone with very powerful spiritual powers. Someone more a long the lines of Kagome. But why?”

 

Sorano sighed, “I don't know. But I need to find him. Poppy do you know where I can find him?”

 

Eugene sighed, “No.”

 

Sorano and Eugene sat in silence for a while. She had some major thinking to do. So they are looking for someone with spiritual powers. Someone with very powerful levels of it. Kagome is one of the most powerful miko I have ever met. But it attacked Rin. Sorano exhaled deeply as she looked at the wall of security cameras. Sorano smirked when she spotted Inuyasha and Kagome grinding on the dance floor. Those two do make a really cute couple.

 

Sorano's eyes widened when Inuyasha started to kiss her neck. Well this is new. Kagome I can't believe that you are letting him do that. You would have purified any other person who tried that and yet here you are letting Inuyasha suck your neck. Sorano's jaw dropped as she watched the two have a tongue battle right on camera. I will so be using that against her later.

 

Suddenly Sorano stiffened. It can't be… I thought he was dead… he has to be dead… Sorano looked at the video screen again and saw a figure approaching Kagome and Inuyasha. Sorano bolted from her seat and ran from the office as fast as she could. Kagome look out!!

Kagome looked up and saw someone running at her. She sensed the person's youki and knew it wasn't Inuyasha. Kagome scooted back as the person leapt into the air and raised both arms ready to attack. She couldn't do anything! She couldn't even move without being over come with dizziness! I can't summon my miko! Oh Kami-sama!!! Sorano… Sango… Inuyasha…!

 

“NNNNOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!”

 

Kagome watched as if in slow motion. The youkai that haunted her dreams. The youkai that made her look over her shoulder was flying through the air and coming right at her. Inuyasha wouldn't get to her in time. There was nothing she could do in her state to protect herself. And now he was flying right at her ready to kill. Suddenly a streak of white light connected with him and they both hit the ground hard. Kagome blinked hard. It happened so fast.

 

Suddenly Kagome was being pulled to her feet by two strong arms and was being held very protectively. Kagome looked up and felt her head throb but she had to see who was holding her. “Inuyasha?”

 

Inuyasha pulled her tightly to him, “Of Kami-sama Kagome are you alright?! Are you hurt?!”

 

Kagome wrapped her arms around him and snuggled into his chest, “I hit my head pretty hard but I think I'll be fine.”

 

A loud growl echoed through the club and the music stopped. Kagome turned her head and looked at the youkai and…

 

“Sorano?!”

 

Sorano was standing between Kagome and Inuyasha and the youkai that tried to attack her. Sorano was growling and so was the other youkai. How did she know?! Sorano was growling so menacingly that it was sending chills up Kagome's spine.

 

“What the fuck are you doing here Shigekazu!”

 

Kagome cringed. Sorano never swears. And when she does you know that she is beyond angry.

 

Inuyasha leaned down and whispered in her ear, “Kagome what is going on? Who is this guy?”

 

Kagome tried to tell him. But the words just got stuck in her throat. How could she tell Inuyasha about him? How come he wasn't dead?! “Kagome?”

 

“What do you think I'm doing here Sorano! I came from what is rightfully mine!” Shigekazu leapt at Sorano. Sorano growled out and blocked his every attack. Shigekazu punched at Sorano but she dodged it as she spun around and kicked him hard in the gut. The force of the kick was so powerful that Shigekazu flew across the dance area and hit the wall.

 

Sorano, keeping her eye on Shigekazu, walked backwards and towards Kagome and Inuyasha. Sorano stopped within reach of Kagome and called over her shoulder, “Kagome are you and Inuyasha alright?”

 

Kagome reached a hand out and placed it on Sorano's back, “How is this possible… Sorano he is supposed to be dead?!”

 

Sorano sighed, “I know that Kagome but he isn't. I would know his youki anywhere. You need to get out of here. Inuyasha?”

 

Kagome felt Inuyasha stiffen slightly behind, “Hai?”

 

“I need you to get Kagome out of here. Please take her somewhere safe. I will come when I have taken care of this mess.”

 

“NO!”

 

“Kagome do NOT argue with me on this. Do as I say,” Kagome saw Sorano's head turn to look up. Kagome looked up and saw everyone standing at the rail looking down. “Sango!” Sango looked from the wreckage to Sorano. “Get everyone out of here and make sure that Kagome gets somewhere safe!”

 

Sango nodded as she turned to the others and started whispering something. Everyone started to run towards the stairs. Well everyone but Sesshomaru. Sesshomaru jumped the railing and flew towards Sorano. He landed softly beside Sorano and turned to look at her.

 

“Sorano what is going on?”

 

“I don't have time to explain. Please Sesshomaru help Sango get everyone out of here. Make sure that Kagome gets to a safe place.”

 

“I am not leaving you Sorano!”

 

Sorano turned and looked at Sesshomaru. She gently placed a hand on his cheek. “Please Sesshomaru. I can't fight if you are here. Help Inuyasha get Kagome out of here. She needs to be kept safe.”

 

Sesshomaru looked like he was about to argue but Shigekazu was getting up and he didn't look to happy about it. Sesshomaru looked one last at Sorano before turning around and glaring at Inuyasha. “You heard Sorano! Inuyasha lets move!”

 

“No I am not leaving Sorano!” Kagome yelped as Inuyasha threw her over his shoulder and started to run from the club. Inuyasha was about half way across the floor when she heard the growls of Shigekazu coming from almost right beside him. Kagome glanced up and saw that Shigekazu was running right at them.

 

Sorano leapt forward and tackled Shigekazu to the ground. Sorano pinned him and glared at Kagome, Inuyasha and Sesshomaru with slightly darkening eyes. “I SAID GO!!” Inuyasha ran the rest of the way across the dance floor and out of the club. Kagome held onto the back of Inuyasha's shirt as she strained to see what was going on. There were so many people trying to get out of the club. Sesshomaru was right behind Inuyasha and he was blocking anyone was running into them.

 

A sudden blast of cold air on her legs told Kagome that Inuyasha had cleared the club and was now running across the street to the cars. Once they were at the cars Inuyasha gently placed Kagome down. Kagome's knees buckled and she almost fell. Inuyasha was quicker and grabbed her around the waist.

 

“Okay what the fuck is going on?! Who the hell was that youkai?! And why are you holding my Kagome mutt?!!!”

 

Inuyasha growled but was saved but Sango who slapped Koga upside the head, “Shut up wolf! We can't talk about that now we need to get the hell out here.”

 

Rin was dancing from foot to foot as she stared at the entrance of the club. People were still streaming out of the club but the sounds of crashing, shattering glass and growls could still be heard over the screaming people. Sango glanced over at Rin and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “Rin don't worry Sorano is going to be fine. She is a very powerful youkai. She can easily kick Shigekazu's ass!”

 

Rin looked at Sango and then back at the club, “I hope your right…”

 

Inuyasha growled in frustration, “Look as much fun as this is we need to get the hell out of here. That thing is after Kagome. Sorano told me to get her somewhere safe and that is what I am going to do. Now where the hell is somewhere safe?”

 

“Inuyasha no baka,” Inuyasha growled at Sesshomaru but he just ignored it, “The safest place would be our house.”

 

“Then lets get a move on. I think that everyone should come to our house. That way Sorano will know were to go.”

 

“Inuyasha that sounds like a good idea but how is Sorano going to know where to go?”

 

Rin turned to Miroku and smiled slightly as she reached into her shirt and pulled out a very beautiful pendant that was hanging on a silver chain. Kagome smiled as she looked at the pendant. It was a silver phoenix that was holding a small ruby in its talons, “This is how Sorano will find us.”

 

Miroku looked at the pendant closer, “That is very beautiful but I still don't see how that is going to tell Sorano where we are.”

 

Rin shook her head softly and laughed, “Silly, this pendant is infused with Sorano's youki. She gave it to me the minute my adoption was finalized. She said that as long as I wore it she would always know where I was. She can track me through this no matter how far away I am.”

 

“Now that sounds like a plan. Everyone into your cars. Miroku Sango follow Sesshomaru. He will lead you to our house.”

 

Everyone nodded as they ran to their vehicles. Inuyasha helped Kagome over to Sesshomaru's car. Sesshomaru unlocked the car and Inuyasha helped Kagome into the back seat. Inuyasha climbed in beside her and closed the door. “Let's get going now Sesshomaru.” Sesshomaru climbed into the driving seat and took off.

Inuyasha sat on his living room couch with Kagome sitting on his lap. It had been three hours since they have left the club and there was still no word on Sorano. Kagome had been silently crying for almost two hours now and Inuyasha's youkai blood was demanding that she be pacified. How the hell am suppose to calm her down?! She wants Sorano! She won't even talk to us about who the hell that guy was.

 

Inuyasha glanced around the room. Rin was sitting with Sango and she was playing with her pendant. Rin had told them once they were safe that she was late coming home from a friend's house and she felt the pendant get warm. She said that when she pulled it out the ruby was glowing brightly and it was very warm to the touch. But the pendant was cool to the touch and this didn't help to calm Rin down.

 

Inuyasha's eyes fell on Sesshomaru who was standing on the other side of the room staring out the window. He had been standing there for the past two and half hours. His eyes were scanning the driveway and the tree line. He was waiting for any sight of Sorano.

 

Inuyasha sighed and started rubbing small circles into Kagome's back. “Kagome please tell me who this Shigekazu person is. Why was he after you?”

 

Kagome let out a little sob as she slowly pushed herself away from Inuyasha to look him in the eye, “He is my guardian.”

 

“What?!”

 

Kagome flinched and Inuyasha rubbed her back in apology, “Sorry… what do you mean he is your guardian?”

 

Kagome sniffed again as she wiped at her tear soaked cheeks, “After my parents died Shigekazu became my guardian. At first he was really nice until he found out about the Higurashi family fortune. It states in my mother and father's will that on my 21st birthday I will inherit the whole family fortune. As long as I am alive that is. If I die the fortune goes to my guardian. It would all go to Shigekazu. That's how I met Sorano. I was working at my family's shrine when Shigekazu approached me and asked me about the will. I told him I didn't know anything and then the fight started. I had only trained a little bit to become a miko. I hadn't even really begun the training and here I was being attacked by a youkai I thought was family.”

 

Kagome wiped her cheeks again and took a deep breath, “I thought that I was going to die but then suddenly Shigekazu was thrown back and hit Goshinboku. I looked over my shoulder and there was Sorano. She had never looked so beautiful to me. Her hair was blowing wildly in the wind and she looked like she was glowing. She had her hand out in front of her and it was glowing slightly. She was the one that saved my life that day. I quickly jumped up and ran to her as fast as I could. She told me to run down the shrine steps and go and wait with a little girl named Rin,” Kagome looked over at Rin and Rin smiled back.

 

“I met Rin and Rin told me that Sorano had been sensing that someone was in danger and that she was going to help that person. I remember hearing a great battle and then suddenly Sorano was walking down the steps and coming towards us. She asked me if I had anywhere to go and I told her I didn't. She didn't even give it a second thought as she asked me if I would like to come and live with her. She saved my life that day, in more ways then one. A few times later Shigekazu would came after me but on the last time he came after me Sorano really lost it. I ended really badly hurt and Sorano killed Shigekazu.”

 

Kagome took a shuddering breath, “At least we thought she had killed him. But I guess…”

 

“WWWOOOAAAHHH!!!!”

 

Kagome and Inuyasha both jumped as Rin yelled. “Rin what's the matter?!” Sango looked down at Rin and then at the pendant. The ruby on the pendant was glowing with such an intense red that Sango had to look away. Rin jumped up and danced around the room.

 

“Sorano is coming!! Sorano is coming back!! She will be here soon!!” Rin ran over to Kagome and hugged her tightly. “I just knew that everything was going to be okay!! You'll see Kagome Sorano isn't someone to be killed by a lowlife like Shigekazu.”

 

Kagome smiled as she looked at Rin. Inuyasha was so happy to see that Kagome had stopped crying and now she was laughing and smiling with Rin. Inuyasha looked over at Sesshomaru and saw his eyes widen. Inuyasha watched as headlights from a car came through the window. A few seconds later the sound of a car could be heard pulling into the parking area in front of the house. The engine was cut and the sound of a car door opening and closing was heard. Inuyasha was suddenly aware that everyone in the room was dead quiet.

 

Inuyasha looked at Kagome and saw that she was beaming from ear to ear. Inuyasha turned his attention to the door and suddenly was over come with a sickening scent. No it can't be! Inuyasha looked to Sesshomaru and saw that he had smelt it as well. The doorknob turned and the door slowly opened. The scent hit Inuyasha like a ton of bricks. It was the scent of blood.

 

Sorano walked slowly into the room and Inuyasha heard Kagome gasp. Sorano looked at Kagome and smiled slightly before her eyes rolled back and she fell in a bloody heap on the fall.

 

“SORANO!!!!!!”
