The Notebook

InuYasha's sensitive nose picked up the scent of some birds. His dog instincts kicked in as he chased the winged creatures. The dumb animals finally figured out that they should take flight. But little did they know that this person wasn't strictly earthbound either. With a quick glance around, to make sure that no one was watching, InuYasha leapt into the air in further pursuit of the birds. His chase stopped short when the bark of a fellow canine interrupted.
To any other normal human the bark might have been considered a threat. After all, the bark was loud, and deep, and it didn't sound very welcoming at all. But InuYasha could understand dog talk, and so he knew that the bark was merely a way of saying hello. InuYasha greeted the dog in return, and the canine, pleased to find that one of those strange two-legged creatures spoke his language, introduced himself as Ripper, and asked if he was from some other neighborhood, since his scent was so unfamiliar. InuYasha told him that he was trying to find the house of a friend of his.
“Do you happen to know a girl called Kagome? She has a scent that smells like roses, and strawberry shampoo.”
“Yeah, she lives just down the road, at this house that smells like cat litter.”
“She has a cat?”
“Yep, and a brother too, but brothers don't smell as bad as cats.” The dog let out a short bark of laughter. InuYasha thanked him for his help, and then ran for the litter-smelling house.
As he approached the house he noticed that it was painted a bright blue, and it had a large backyard, with a swing set. He also noticed that the backyard had a small woods behind it, and there was a little trail leading through the trees. He looked down at his palm, which had the address written on it in blue ink.
“Yep, Ripper was right, this is the place. 500 Jewel St.”
InuYasha stepped up onto the porch, and rang the doorbell. A woman, probably Kagome's mom, answered the door.
“Are you one of Kagome's little friends?” She asked, putting a bright smile on. She looked remarkably like an older version of Kagome, just with shorter hair.
“Um, yes ma'am, I'm InuYasha. Nice to meet you.” InuYasha saw her look at him in surprise after he said his name. Her eyes widened as she took in his hair and eyes more carefully.
“Oh my. But doesn't InuYasha mean dog demon?” Now it was his turn to be surprised. Not even he knew the full meaning of his name. Although he now knew what inu meant, he hadn't even begun to guess what yasha was. Before he could even answer Mrs. Higurashi, she cut him off.
“Never mind, dear, I can see that you're just as surprised as I am. They're in the living room. Just walk down the hall, and turn right.” She let him in, and then headed for some other room in the house.
InuYasha walked in just as Sango was slapping Miroku. Kagome was watching from the couch with amusement, and she was sitting next to a strange redheaded girl, who was laughing her head off.
As he entered the room, everyone became silent. I should just leave now. They obviously don't need me around to spoil their fun. The strange redhead was looking at him as if he had sprouted two heads or something. I know her; she's that girl that was spreading rumors about me being inhuman.
“InuYasha, nice to see you! I thought that you weren't going to show up. Oh by the way, have you met Ayame yet?” Miroku gestured to the redhead, and InuYasha nodded in greeting. Might as well keep my mouth shut, and be polite. Besides, I could be wrong about her. Maybe it was someone else who spread those rumors. Ayame glared at him.
“The pleasure's all mine.” She said, with sarcasm dripping off of every word.
The doorbell rang, and Kagome went to answer it, calling back to them to sit tight, it probably was the pizza guy. Just as Kagome disappeared, Ayame spoke up.
“So, is it true, InuYasha, that your parents abandoned you, and left you on the doorstep of some unsuspecting person.” She stated this as if she was talking about the weather, and InuYasha knew that although she appeared to be asking him something, she was really just taunting him.
She picked up a lock of his hair. “What color do you call this? Platinum? What beauty salon did you get this done at? I would sue.” She let out a small laugh.
“For your information,” he snarled, his temper getting the better of him “This is its natural color.”
“And I suppose your going to tell me that's a natural eye color too. Well, no wonder your parents abandoned you. I mean, did your mom smoke weed while she was pregnant with you, or what?”
“YOU LEAVE MY MOTHER OUT OF THIS, YOU BITCH!” And with that, InuYasha launched himself at the girl. He came so close to ripping her throat out, but was stopped by a pair of hands, trying to restrain him. He was at least happy to see that Ayame had shrunk back in sheer terror, her eyes wide. But he would not be fully satisfied until his claws, still concealed, could meet her flesh. He was seeing red, and he felt a bloodlust, stronger than any other that he had felt before.
Then Kagome entered the room, and practically dropped the pizzas that she was carrying. She witnessed Ayame huddled in a corner, trembling in fear, while Miroku, and now Sango, tried to restrain InuYasha from harming her. InuYasha was emitting a low growl from his throat, and his eyes seemed to be tinted with red. She became worried for him.
“Inu…Ya…sha?” she said, hesitantly, trying to get close to the shaking boy. She gently laid a hand on his arm, noticing that his shaking had stopped at her touch. He took a deep breath, and slowly calmed himself down. He glanced over at Kagome, her face clouded with worry for him. He pulled himself from Sango and Miroku, and strode towards the door.
“I'm outta here. I don't need to take any more shit from Ayame-the-bitch.” With those parting words, he slammed the door, and marched down the hall, also slamming the front door.
Kagome turned to Ayame, curious about what she had said to make InuYasha so furious. Ayame had also calmed down, but looked as if she had gotten the daylights startled out of her. But her fear became replaced with anger.
“Who does that guy think he is, attacking me like that? For no reason, I might add!” Miroku glared at her with ferocity for his friend's sake.
“Actually, he was perfectly within his rights. After all, you did insult him. You even insulted his mother, for crying out loud! I'm surprised that he didn't rip your throat out earlier.”
“I agree with Miroku. That was entirely uncalled for! He did nothing to you! I only restrained him because I didn't want blood on Kagome's clean carpet. ” Even Sango was on the side of InuYasha.
“Perhaps it would be better if you left, Ayame. You've caused enough trouble.” Ayame gaped at the group.
“Fine, I'm leaving! But it's a sad day in the history of friendship when friends chose a stranger over their buddies!” And with that, she stomped out the door.
Kagome and Sango exchanged glances. Now that it was mentioned, they barely could recall why they had become friends with Ayame. She was constantly gossiping, and would talk the head off of a person if she had the opportunity.
Not long after Ayame left, Miroku and Sango left too, declaring that, although they didn't want to seem rude, everything had been spoiled. And frankly, Kagome was inclined to agree with them. Ayame had shown her true colors, and Kagome was disturbed that she hadn't seen them before. And my headache's returning. What a day!
As Kagome waved to her friends' retreating cars, she noticed something near the front door.
It was a small, red, notebook, with a small silver pen in the looping wire binding. She skimmed through it, pausing briefly on pages with scraps of stories, or pages with journal entries. She read a little, interested by the writer's intricate descriptions. This paragraph stood out in her mind:
“He felt alone, as if he was drifting in an endless void through space, with no one there to listen, no one there to see, no one there to feel the pain. He only survived because he knew that to die would leave him even more alone. Besides if he died, who would be there to bury him? But though he lived, he never could enjoy the warm rays of the sun, or the gentle, soothing breeze. He was an outcast, not even considered human by some. So he became stronger, to at least show them, show those who never saw, that he could survive on his own.”
Kagome felt as if she had heard words like this before, but she couldn't place her finger on it. Who owns this notebook? She turned to the inside of the cover and found the following:
“Private property of InuYasha Taiyoukai. Anyone other than the owner found in possession of this notebook shall be severely dealt with. You have been warned.”
Oh shit.
