The Shikon no Tama
Prologue
Ayumi sighed as she shook her head at Kagome. Curious, Kagome looked up and asked, "What's wrong?"
The teenager shook her head again. "How is it you know so much about history?" she questioned.
Kagome shrugged. "I guess it's one of those things that happens when you live at a shrine. My grandfather believes knowing our history is really important because not only does it define us as a people, but also as individuals."
Ayumi raised an eyebrow. "Still doesn't explain why you know so much..."
Kagome smiled. "I love history. Everything about history intrigues me. The people, the food, the culture..."
Ayumi ignored her friend and continued reading her library book. Suddenly both of her eyebrows were raised. "Hey, Kagome, bet'cha haven't heard this one!" she said. She read aloud:
"Many believe that the Shikon no Tama was a jewel which aided demons to become stronger and more powerful, however, legend has it that the Shikon no Tama was actually a woman. Not just any woman, but a human priestess of pure heart. Also known as the Demon Priestess, the Shikon no Tama could both bless demons and curse them. It is said that with one touch, she could either grant a demon more power or purify them, no matter how powerful the demon is at the time. She changed the way demons lived their lives. Those who didn't conform were never heard of again.
"Both feared and worshipped, the Demon Priestess walked the lands of the Feudal Era weilding a bow and arrow. According to legend, her companion and lover was a hanyou who weilded a great sword. Her closest friends included a monk and a demonslayer and she adopted a small kitsune demon.
"Unfortunately, a great battle ensued that almost cost her her life as well as those she kept close to her heart. After the battle, she disappeared and was never heard of again."
As Kagome listened to her friend read the article, she began to pale. It couldn't possibly be true. The Shikon no Tama? A woman? It wasn't true. She knew too much of the Shikon no Tama to know better. As it was, she had the completed jewel. The article had to be mistaken.
As Ayumi continued, Kagome paled even more. A hanyou companion and lover... A monk and a demonslayer... An adopted kitsune...
Ayumi looked up. She was curious as to why her friend hadn't tried to rebuke her or the book yet. Kagome was always doing that it seemed. She noticed Kagome's pale complexion and immediately began to worry. After all, Kagome was severly anemic. "Kagome? Are you alright?" she asked.
The young miko stared at her friend and slowly nodded. "I think... I'm not feeling well," she answered. "I think... I'm going to go home... Can I borrow that book?"
Ayumi nodded. "Just remember to bring it back to the library on Thursday. I can't have any overdue books on my record."
Kagome thanked her friend and put the book in her backpack. She took a long time getting home.

Author's Note: I didn't realize it until after I posted the story up, but I had gotten Ayumi and Ayame confuzzled. So, I went ahead and corrected it. No wonder the story seemed a bit off...
