The Shikon no Tama

Chapter One:

"Inuyasha, sit!" Kagome screamed.

The hanyou fell to the ground instantly. Miroku and Sango shook their heads.

"The least you could do is pretend to enjoy the food," the monk stated.

The priestess shot daggars at him. "Pretend??!!" she yelled. "Is that all you are doing, Miroku? 'Pretending' to enjoy my cooking?"

The monk held his hands up in submission. "Calm down, Kagome. No, I actually enjoy your cooking. I only said that..."

"You 'actually' enjoy my cooking. Is it so unbelievable to enjoy my cooking?" she asked. "I went through a lot of trouble to make that meal."

Sango rested a hand on Kagome's shoulder. "He didn't mean it as an insult, Kagome," she assured her friend. "If anything, he was trying to compliment you by saying he enjoys your cooking. What is unbelievable is the fact that Inuyasha doesn't."

"I agree," Shippo stated as he put another hotdog in his mouth. Between bites, he said, "I don't see how anyone could not like your cooking, Kagome."

"Thank you, Shippo," the priestess said, smiling at him. She looked at Miroku and apologized, "I'm sorry. It just annoys me when he acts so unappreciative."

Inuyasha slowly got up and edged away from the group. He hadn't meant to insult her like that. In fact, he didn't know what had come over him. He had meant to compliment her. To tell her how much he was enjoying the meal. But, the words came out wrong. He knew better than to try to explain this. All he'd end up doing is arguing with her again.

The hanyou watched as his friends talked over the previous demon battles and the upcoming battle with Naraku. It was common knowledge that Kagome was in love with him. That was one of the reasons, he knew, she did some of the things she did, like cook for them. The trouble was, he wasn't sure his feelings for her.

He overheard them mention Koga, and another thought occurred to him. What if she were to decide she was through waiting for Inuyasha to sort out his feelings and went with the wolf demon instead? He quickly put that thought out of his mind. There's no way Kagome would go with Koga.

But what if she did? Inuyasha knew the door would eventually close unless he did something. But what? He couldn't proclaim his love. Not with Kikyo...

Kikyo. She was the road block between him and Kagome. As long as he still thought of, and loved, Kikyo, there would be no place for Kagome. Or would there? Could he love both? Kagome would never hear of it and Kikyo would forever be jealous.

The hanyou grunted. He didn't know what to do. He had thought about talking to someone about it, but who? No one he knew could help him. Not with this... Well, there was one, but he'd die before he ever asked that one for any help.

"Inuyasha? Would you like to wait until tomorrow or leave now?" Miroku asked.

Inuyasha stood up. "Let's go while it's still daylight. We'll camp when it starts getting darker."

The monk nodded and went to the others to let them know the hanyou's decision.

Kagome couldn't stop thinking about what was in that book. She had brought the book with her, thinking to show it to the others. However, once she got to the Feudal Era, she thought twice about it. If what the book said were fact, then telling them could change things. Not to mention, rewrite history.

It bothered Kagome to no end. The mere thought that there could be someone out there who possessed that kind of power scared her. The idea that the book could possibly be talking about her, because she figured that's who it was talking about, terrified her even more. It described her almost perfectly. A monk and a demonslayer for friends. A kitsune ward. The only thing it got wrong was a hanyou lover. Grant it, she and Inuyasha were close, but they were far from being lovers. Unless...

She watched as Inuyasha walked in front of the group. Is it possible that Inuyasha is able to put his history with Kikyo behind him? Has he already done so? If it were true, Kagome would have no problems getting even closer to him. However, she had to think of her own heart.

Wait. What if the book were talking about Kikyo? What if the jewel somehow revives her fully and it becomes Kikyo who is the Demon Priestess? After all, Kikyo is already dead. It'll just be one more step. But, Kikyo's heart isn't pure, and the book said that the Demon Priestess was pure at heart.

Kagome's brain hurt from thinking so hard about it. She felt faint and would have fallen to the ground had Miroku not caught her.

"Are you alright, Kagome?" he asked.

She shook her head. "I think I need to rest. I'm feeling queasy all of a sudden," she told him, which was true.

"Inuyasha," Sango called, "Kagome's not feeling well and wishes to camp for the night."

The hanyou turned around and saw Kagome's face. She was as white as a ghost. Instantly worried for her, the hanyou agreed to the stop. Though it put a damper in the journey, Kagome's health was important to him.

Kagome could feel the hanyou's eyes on her. She knew he was worried. She also knew he would never admit to such feelings... or would he? Inuyasha was a half dog demon and he had been with Kagome for quite a few years now. She looked up at him and met his yellow eyes.

"Inuyasha," she called from her blanket that she had spread out beneath her. "Why don't you come sit with me?" she offered, patting the blanket.

He tilted his head slightly. Curious, he joined her, but in an annoyed tone, he asked, "What do you want now?"

Kagome rolled her eyes. Instead of answering, she looked up at the sky. "Isn't it beautiful? All the different colours?" she asked.

He followed her gaze. Yes, Kagome. It is beautiful. As beautiful as you are. That's what he wanted to say. It was there. The words played over and over again in his head. However, he couldn't gather the courage to say them. Instead, he responded, "I guess. Looks too bright to me."

Kagome gave a frustrated sigh. For the past few years, she had been trying everything. Literally. Anything to get him to see things the way she did. But, even now, he didn't seem to grasp it. "I think they look... alive," she told him. She waved her hand up at the sky. "You see the way the pinks seem to be sort of dancing with the purples and oranges? And then the white and yellow that shines through. Sort of like a beacon of hope for all creatures."

Inuyasha listened to her and could hear the passion in her voice as she spoke about the sky. To him, it was like a love song. The way her voice rose and decended with each syllable. If he could just have a little bit of that passion.. just a taste.... But, no. He knew he could never be with Kagome. Not like that.

He wanted to tell her how much she reminded him of the sky. How she was like the pinks when she danced with him during a battle. How she was the white and yellow that acted as a beacon of hope in his heart. But, to tell her this, to admit this, was to admit that he was wrong about Kikyo. That his promise to Kikyo was one written into disaster.

If there was one thing about Inuyasha, he was loyal. And he kept his promises. He couldn't forget the promise he made to Kikyo. However, over the years, he began getting to know Kagome more. He knew he loved Kagome. He couldn't deny it. At least, not to himself. But, he didn't want her to believe that they could be together when he still had to follow through with his promise to Kikyo.

"Inuyasha?" came Kagome's singsong voice.

The hanyou gazed at her. Seeing her in the dying sunlight made him yearn for her touch. His heart ached for something he hadn't felt since the day he and Kikyo talked about him becoming human. At the same time, he could feel his heart breaking. No. The last thing he would do would be to hurt Kagome. He could never tell her how he felt.

"Are you ok, Inuyasha?" she asked him.

He snorted, "I don't know where you get all that stuff from. All I see is a bunch of colours mixed together, creating one big mess. Nothing special about it."

Kagome gave a sigh of submission and shook her head. "You are so hopeless," she told him.

"Kagome? Can you tell me a story?" Shippo asked, galloping over and jumping in Inuyasha's lap.

She smiled. "Ok. Sure."

Miroku and Sango looked up and smiled. They waited patiently for Kagome to begin her story.

"Once upon a time..."
