Chapter Six:

The next morning, Kagome woke up feeling as if she had never slept as well before. If only she didn't have that stick digging into her back. Thinking it was a twig, she reached behind her and grabbed it. She felt cloth.

Oh, god, it wasn't a stick she had felt. She then remembered where she was. Up in a tree with Inuyasha. That hadn't been a stick she felt. That had been his...

She jumped and screamed. "Oh, god! I'm so sorry!" she apologized before she lost her footing.

Inuyasha made a grab for her, but he was too late. They both began falling from the tree. Inuyasha grabbed Kagome and, at the last second, put himself between her and the ground. They hit the ground with a heavy thud.

They laid there for a moment to catch their breath. All the while, Kagome kept thinking about what she had just touched.

"Are you ok?" Inuyasha asked when his lungs stopped hurting.

Kagome, not wanting to come into contact with that again, rolled off of him and sat up. She touched her shoulder where it had hit a branch on the way down. She replied, "Yeah, I think I'm ok."

Immediately, he jumped up and started yelling, "Why the hell did you jump like that, stupid? Didn't you realize we were up in a tree? Did you want to fall and get hurt?"

"Yes, Inuyasha, that's exactly what I wanted to do," she yelled back sarcastically. "If you hadn't had your thing digging in my back, I wouldn't have jumped!"

His thing? Inuyasha paused and tilted his head. "Thing?" he repeated. "What thing?"

She pointed to his pants. He looked down and both his eyebrows flew up. His face turned beet red as he realized he was hard. He had been dreaming about Kagome. He didn't realize his body had reacted to those dreams.

Because Inuyasha's clothes were so big, Kagome really couldn't tell whether or not he was still hard. She had no desire to find out either. Or did she?

Naturally, at first the idea frightened her. After all, she had never been with a guy before. Sure, she had had fantasies. What teenager didn't? But the idea of actually doing it?

She looked at Inuyasha again. She knew he would never hurt her. At least, not intentionally.

"I love you, Kagome."

The word ran in her head. She could feel the butterflies begin to form in her stomach. Could she do it with Inuyasha? What kind of question was that?! Did she really expect him to make such a huge profession of love and not expect to do anything about it? She wasn't fifteen anymore.

She pictured herself in a wedding gown. In her mind, Inuyasha was dressed in a black tux. No, not black. Black wasn't his colour. It would have to be a white tux. He was hot. She smiled at the picture she had conjured.

"What are you smiling about?" Inuyasha asked, reminding Kagome where she was.

She looked at Inuyasha and started laughing. His face was still red and leaves were sticking out of his hair. She stepped closer to him and began pulling the leaves out. Boldly, she kissed him lightly on the lips.

She didn't know if she would wait until her wedding day or not. She wasn't sure if she really cared. But, she loved Inuyasha and he loved her. She knew he was a guy and, like just like her, he fantasized. Unlike her, when his fantasies got too wild, it showed. She couldn't blame him for that.

"Who were you thinking of this morning?" she asked without thinking. She immediately feared the answer.

His face turned ever redder. He couldn't believe she would guess that he had indeed been thinking of someone. And what would make her think that it was anyone but... "You," he mumbled under his breath.

She laughed even more as she took the brush out of her backpack and began brushing his hair. She noticed the colour on his face and kissed him again. "What are you so embarrassed about? I'm sure it's not the first time you've thought of me. Just the first time you were caught in the act. It's not like I've never thought of you."

He tilted his head slightly. That made his heart skip a beat. She's thought of him? Like that? "But..."

She sighed and began brushing her own hair. "I guess it was bound to come up sooner or later. We couldn't just be together and never actually be together."

Inuyasha didn't know what to say. She was right, of course. Eventually, it would've come up. Thing was, he wanted it to. He wanted to be with her. Forever. "So, what did you have in mind?" he asked, taking a step towards her.

That's when Kagome noticed the others. Shippo's face was buried in the ground by Miroku. Both the monk and the demonslayer stared at the new couple with wide eyes.

Kagome's eyes widened as well as she quickly stepped out of Inuyasha's embrace. "You'll see," she told him.

He looked hurt as he whispered, "Kagome?"

"I said, not right now, Inuyasha," she confirmed.

She then grabbed his arms and turned him around. Now he understood. It made him turn red all over again.

"Gee, Inuyasha," Miroku teased, breaking the silence and the tension. "I didn't know you were such a ladies' man."

"Shut up, monk!" the hanyou growled. "How long have you three been spying on us?"

Sango looked around the camp. "Um, Inuyasha," she informed, "we weren't spying on you. We've been here the whole time."

"Why didn't you say something?" he demanded, now even more embarrassed. It was bad enough talking to Kagome about sex, but to have them there made it even worse.

Miroku and Sango looked to each other. Sango blushed as she replied, "We didn't know what to say. At first, we were worried when you fell from the tree. Then, you started arguing. When Kagome yelled about..."

The demonslayer stopped talking. She was too embarrassed by what she accidently witnessed. Even Miroku couldn't finish the explanation.

Shippo freed himself from the monk and ran to Kagome. He jumped onto her shoulder. "Are you ok, Kagome? That was a nasty fall," he said innocently.

Kagome was thankful Shippo hadn't seen or heard too much. She pulled him off her shoulder and held him in her arms. She looked at Inuyasah as she answered, "Yeah, Shippo. I'm ok."

Most of the day was spent in silence. Inuyasha, still embarrassed about the morning, walked in front, away from the others. Kagome lagged behind with her bike as Miroku and Sango kept to the middle.

Kagome watched as Shippo played along the path. He didn't stay too long with any particular companion. Most of his time was spent throwing a small red ball in the air and then running to catch it.

Kagome thought about the kitsune. She knew he was still very much a child, though it was possible he was not much younger than Inuyasha. Demons aged a lot slower than humans and hanyous. She figured none of the humans present would see Shippo grow into an adult. It made her sad.

She knew how much Shippo loved and cared for all of them. Who would love and care for him when they were gone? She didn't know how long it took for a demon to reach puberty. She knew Shippo hadn't gotten there yet. Curious, she called to him.

The kitsune ran and jumped onto her shoulder. "Yes, Kagome?" he answered.

"Shippo, if you don't mind my asking, how old are you?" the miko questioned.

The kitsune looked at her curiously before shooting the question back at her.

"You should never ask a girl her age, Shippo. It's bad manners," she reprimanded before she replied, "I'm seventeen."

"Really?" he asked, sounding surprised. "You don't seem that young. I'm glad I'm not a human if that's the case. I can't imagine being seventeen and being in love already."

"Shippo," Kagome pressed.

He sighed, "I'm fifty-nine."

It was her turn to look surprised. "You really are young," she whispered. She was expecting to hear a much larger number. "Shippo, how old will you be before you become an adult?"

He thought about it for a moment. "My dad was going on five hundred when I was born. My mom was four hundred and eighty three. They were both still pretty young. Actually, they had just became adults."

Kagome stopped walking. If what he said were true, he wouldn't be an adult until her time. She didn't even expect Inuyasha to live that long. Well, she did, but she knew he would be old. He was already two hundred.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"Sorry for what?" he asked.

She moved him into her arms and hugged him. "I didn't realize it took that long for you to grow. From what you are saying, you are very much still a child."

He shrugged, "It's not a big deal. At least, I'm alive. Most demons don't even live that long."

That made her want to cry more. There had to be some way to ensure Shippo would live a long, healthy life. Even if he did most of it on his own. She wanted Shippo to be happy.

Kagome ran to catch up with the others. "Miroku, we need to talk," she told him, bluntly. She handed Shippo to Sango as she emphasized, "Alone."

The monk and miko let the others get ahead of them. Then, Kagome began, "In the book, it stated how the Demon Priestess found a way for demons and humans to coexist."

"What are you saying?" the monk asked.

"I want to see Shippo become an adult," she replied, "I want to pave a road for him so that he doesn't have to fear losing his life too soon. He's only fifty-nine. He deserves..."

She began to cry. Miroku placed a hand on her back. "When I first met Shippo," she told him, "I felt bad for him. He was so young, yet he'd lost his mother and his father. I love and care about him so much. I don't know what the book was talking about, but I have to find out. For Shippo."

The monk nodded. He honestly didn't know what to say. "Just remember that the book talks about legends. Legends tend to be filled with a lot of myth."

"Growing up, I always believed demons were myth. Monks with mystical powers were just fairy tales my grandfather told. But, they aren't, are they? Since I've come here, I've begun to believe in the impossible," she told him, "Everything I had believed to be fake before is now proving to be very real. The impossible happens everyday. After all, mikos with purifying powers was impossible. As was falling in love with a half-demon."

"Hm. I see your point," he whispered, looking at his now unclothed right hand. "I didn't get to thank you for my hand."

She smiled as she stated, "What are friends for?"
