Chapter Seven:

They approached Kaede's village at dusk two days later. Hand in hand, the hanyou and young miko walking into the hut to tell Kaede the "good news."

Inuyasha watched in amusement as Kagome excitedly told Kaede all about him and her: She and Inuyasha were now officially a couple.

As he listened, the hanyou couldn't help but worry about Kagome. Two days ago, he had heard her crying. Turning around, he had seen her talking with the monk. He had felt rage and wanted to smash the monk's face in for making her cry. Then, as he had watched them, he had realized it was about that damn book again.

He didn't know what was in the book, but he was determined to find out. The last thing he wanted was for Kagome to be hurt and that book was causing her pain.

At first, he had worried about her and the monk. Over the past few days, she had been spending more and more time with Miroku, talking in secret. But, the nights put Inuyasha at ease. She never rejected to sleeping with him up in the trees, though they never got further than talking and kissing.

Oh, how Inuyasha loved kissing her. To him, there wasn't anything sweeter. Every kiss felt like the first one and the taste of her mouth amazed him. It was like honey, or a bowl of instant noodles.

He almost laughed aloud to himself at that thought. What made him think of noodles? Kagome tasted far better than noodles. She couldn't be compared to them.

"Inuyasha?" he head her voice call to him.

Music, he thought. Pure, sweet music. "Yeah?" he grumbled.

"Would you mind letting Kaede and me talk alone for a moment?" Kagome asked.

He could feel the dread starting to fill him. "It's about that stupid book, huh?" he growled, not bothering to correct the way the words were coming out.

Kagome sighed, "I promise. After I talk to Kaede, I'll let you read the book."

He shrugged and mumbled, "Whatever," as he walked out of the hut.

Kaede watched as Kagome pulled a large tome out of her backpack. "Ye shouldn't keep secrets from him," the elderly priestess said. "I know the two of ye just made things official, but ye and Inuyasha have been through a lot together... Are ye listening, child?"

Seemingly unaffected by Kaede's words, Kagome opened the book to the right page and handed it to the older priestess. "This passage, right here," she said, pointing it out.

Concerned, Kaede read the passage. When she got to the end, she had to stop to digest the information. "How is that possible?" she asked.

Kagome shrugged. "Now do you see why I wanted to wait before I told Inuyasha? I've been talking to Miroku about it, but neither of us can figure it out. He seems to think that somehow, I come to possess the jewel, but I'm not sure. I already carry the jewel with me, what more is there?"

Kaede thought about it for a moment before she replied, "Swallow it."

Kagome stared, stunned. "Wha... What?"

The elderly priestess explained, "When ye first came here, the jewel was inside your body. Perhaps that is what the book is saying. The jewel is ye because the jewel is inside ye. Or, is supposed to be. Mistress Centipede changed that when she took the jewel from your body. So, it needs to go back where it belongs."

The more Kagome thought about those words, the more they made sense. Kagome shivered at the thought of swallowing the jewel. She hated taking pills, much less a whole jewel. That jewel was huge, too.

"Before ye do anything, however, talk to Inuyasha. He deserves to know what this is all about," the older priestess said.

Kagome nodded. "I'm going now."

Inuyasha read the passage again. This is what had been worrying Kagome. He didn't blame her for worrying. He had never heard of a human actually turning into a demon. Sure, he knew about Onigumo. But, Naraku was only a half-demon, and Onigumo was dead.

Even Kikyo was dead, so she couldn't count. She had demons who served her, but she wasn't a demon.

"Inuyasha?" the soft sound of Kagome's voice entered and registered into his mind.

"What did Kaede say?" he asked.

She sighed, "That I should swallow the jewel."

"What?!" he demanded. "You can't swallow the jewel! It'll get caught in your throat and you'll choke to death."

She put her hands on her hips. "Do you have a better idea?" she snapped.

Frustrated, he sighed and pulled her into an embrace. He whispered in her ear, "I agree that the jewel needs to get into your body, but swallowing it is not the answer. There has to be another way."

"Like what?" she asked, enjoying the feel of the fire rate robe and the wild scent of his body. She didn't know about swallowing jewels, but she could drink him in all day, everyday.

"I don't know yet," he told her, honestly. "But, together, we'll think of something."

She liked that idea. Since the moment she first saw Inuyasha on the tree, it had been him and her. Sure, for a little while, she feared he'd rather be with Kikyo, but that didn't seem to be the case anymore. Actually,..

"What are you going to do about Kikyo?" she asked, suddenly.

He kissed her shoulder. His mind toyed with the idea of what her skin would taste like under there as he replied without thinking, "Don't worry. It's already taken care of."

"Already taken..." she stopped. She pushed out of his embrace and demanded, "What do you mean, 'already taken care of?' Since when?!"

He was momentarily stunned as he realized what he had said. What he had answered to. "Well, uh... I, uh..." he stammered.

"You saw Kikyo, didn't you?" she snapped, pointing an accusing finger at him. "You saw her and you didn't tell me!"

"You were sleeping!" he protested. "I didn't want to get you upset. All I did was go to her and tell her it was over."

"I was sleeping? You went to her?!" she yelled. "When?"

He tried to remember when that had been. It seemed ages ago now. All that had been on his mind the past few days was Kagome. He couldn't remember when he had seen Kikyo last. Then, it hit him. "The day you healed Miroku's hand," he answered.

She stepped back. "When I was knocked out?" she whispered.

He had never seen her this hurt before. All the times he had run off to Kikyo, he had never seen Kagome like this. His heart ached. "I had to do it, Kagome," he told her. "Nothing happened. We just talked. I told her I couldn't keep my promise to her because I wanted to be with you. I knew you'd be upset if I left while you were awake, so..."

"So you waited until I was sleeping. When you knew I would be asleep long enough for you to find her and tell her," Kagome finished. She could feel her heart breaking. "When I was helpless. What if a demon had attacked us? What if Naraku had come for us? Didn't you think about these things first? No, all you cared about was talking to Kikyo! Damn it, Inuyasha, you are such an idiot! A huge jerk! I can't believe you would do something like this!"

"I did it for us!" he shouted back. "I did it so we could be together. And, no, I wasn't 'waiting' for you to fall asleep. You fainted and then the soul collectors showed up. I didn't fear a demon attack because I didn't sense any demons nearby. Not to mention, I didn't have to go very far. If anyone would've came, I would've known about it instantly. Besides, you were in the hands of Miroku and Sango, both whom wouldn't let anything happen to you."

She turned her back on him and bowed her head. "The least you could've done was tell me," she whispered.

He looked away as he answered, "I'm telling you now."

"Why didn't you tell me before?" she asked, turning back to face him.

He gazed up into her blue eyes. "I didn't think about it," he confessed. "Since I told you how I felt about you, you are all I've thought about. Day and night, you are there. In my mind, in my heart. My dreams are dreams filled of you. I eat, sleep, and drink with thoughts of you. There was no place for Kikyo in my mind because you were all I could think about."

She knew Inuyasha was being honest. Though he didn't really know it, she had been watching him the past few days. When he thought she wasn't looking, he would watch her. But, it still hurt that he didn't tell her about Kikyo. How could something so important like that slip his mind?

"So, what are you going to do?" she asked. "You can't expect to tell Kikyo it's over and her actually buy that."

He stepped closer to her and wrapped her in his arms. He held her close, breathing in her soft scent of lilacs and jasmine. He whispered into her hair, "We'll cross that bridge when we get there."
