Chapter Nine:

Kagome was grateful they were in wolf country. It meant that soon, Koga would come to greet her. She was a bit nervous about seeing the wolf prince again, but she knew it was something they had to do.

She knew Sesshomaru wouldn't care how she smelled, but Koga was a different story. She knew he would be furious when he realized she had been spending more personal time with Inuyasha. He would be hurt and he might try to start a fight. She hoped it wouldn't come down to that. She loved Inuyasha and the wolf demon had to understand that.

Inuyasha placed a hand on his sword, but Kagome didn't need his silent warning to know someone was coming. She could feel it in the wind and she smiled.

Before she could say anything, Koga appeared and took her hands into his. "Hey, Kagome. How are..." he stopped midsentence and she knew he had smelled her.

"Koga," she started to explain.

The wolf turned and stared at Inuyasha. He drew his sword as he let loose a feral growl, "I told you not to touch my woman, you flea-bitten mutt."

"Kagome is not your woman, you mangy wolf," Inuyasha snarled as he drew his own sword. "Now, get your hands off of her before I cut them off."

"Sit, boy!"

As Inuyasha fell to the ground, Koga looked at Kagome. He didn't like what he saw. Never had he seen Kagome really angry before. She was pissed.

"If you two don't stop fighting over me," she yelled, "I'm going to go home and find another guy to marry! A nice, human guy! You two need to grow up and start acting your age. Inuyasha, you, of all people, know how serious our mission is. We did not come here to fight with Koga. We don't have time for your petty arguments."

Koga looked to the miko curiously as Inuyasha slowly started to get up. The priestess sighed as she told Koga about Naraku's "cause."

This caught the wolf's full attention. He then related his own tales of mishaps with the spider demon. "At first," he told them, "demons would come to us asking us to join their cause. But, after I assured them that my tribe would not unite with Naraku, they began attacking us."

"Did you learn what the cause was about?" Miroku asked, hopefully.

Koga shook his head. "Any cause of Naraku's isn't going to be good. Besides, I figured it had something to do with getting the jewel from Kagome and I have no desire to betray her."

"I feel a great battle is coming," Kagome told the wolf demon. "A final battle to destroy Naraku once and for all. You know where I stand in this battle. Koga, will you and your tribe stand beside me?"

He gave her a half smile. "Do you even have to ask that question?" He took her hands into his and looked into her blue eyes. "I will never understand why you'd rather be with that half-demon mutt, but I will always love you, Kagome. I will always fight by your side, no matter what the costs. You can count on my brethern and I being there when you need us."

Kagome smiled kindly to the wolf demon. She knew she could count on him, but it was nice to hear the words. She thanked him as she thought of what to do next.

The Demon Priestess had been known to bestow gifts upon those who helped her. She thought about it and figured it would be worth it in the end. "Koga? Would you accept a gift from me? A little something to show my appreciation for your help?"

The demon had never heard of a woman giving a man a gift, unless it was her lover. However, the thought intrigued him, so he asked, "What kind of gift?"

She thought it over. What could she give him? He was already quite powerful. Then, she remembered his legs. Now that the jewel was completed, there were no shards in his legs. She pointed to them. "I can restore the power in your legs and right arm. It'll be like having the shards again, only this time, it will be permanent."

"How are you going to do that?" he asked, skeptically.

She looked to her companions for support. She thought about Miroku and had an idea. Going to the monk, she took his right hand. She turned his hand so that the palm faced upward.

"I healed Miroku's hand," she told the wolf. "I'm still not quite sure how I did it, but now, if he wants to use the Wind Tunnel, he can call upon it, but it no longer jeopardizes his life."

The wolf, who had seen the power of the monk's hand, was surprised. If Kagome had truly healed the hand like she claimed, then she was indeed a powerful ally. "And you wish to do the same to my legs and arm?" he asked. At her nod, he questioned, "Why?"

She sighed, "We need all the help we can get. If you have the power in your legs and arm, it adds to our own strength."

He thought this over, all the while looking at the monk's uncovered hand. "And you can still call upon the power of your right hand?" he asked the monk.

Miroku nodded. "When I'm in battle," he told the wolf, "I can call upon it and it appears again. When I close my hand, it disappears again."

The wolf nodded in understanding. "Must be nice," he added, "because now you don't have to worry about dying before you get a chance to marry the girl."

Miroku paled. "What girl?"

The wolf rolled his eyes as if it were obvious. He turned his attention back to Kagome. "If you can do it, I will gladly accept the gift. But know this, I've already agreed to help you without the need of said gift," he told her.

She nodded and approached him. She took his hands and held them in her right hand. With her left hand, she took hold of the jewel. She closed her eyes and began to will the power to work. She pictured Koga as he was when he had all three jewels. She willed the gifts to be bestowed upon him.

Then, she felt it. A warmth started to spread throughout her body. She felt the wolf jerk slightly and tightened her grip on his hands. They couldn't break the connection.

Koga watched in awe as Kagome's body started to glow pink. It looked beautiful on her. Then, to his astonishment, the pink light began spreading to him. The warm light made him jump and he let a gasp escape. He felt Kagome's hand tighten and he relaxed, but only slightly.

The pink light was warm and comforting, but it made him nervous. More importantly, with the light, Kagome's scent had changed. She reeked of a power that he had never known before. It terrified him.

Just as suddenly, the warmth began to leave Kagome. It was done. She opened her eyes and stared into the wolf's blue orbs. "Do not fear, wolf prince," she whispered. "The power you lost has been restored."

That said, she gave herself up to the sleep that plagued her. Koga caught her before she toppled onto the ground. Though her scent was back to normal, he couldn't help remembering the change that had occured. He gently picked her up and handed her to Inuyasha.

"I don't know what happened just now," he said, "but something tells me Naraku is getting more than he bargained for."

Like the wind, Koga was gone. The companions looked at the priestess in Inuyasha's arms. They knew the wolf was right about her. Miroku thought about the book and the passage in it. "The Demon Priestess," he whispered.

"What was that?" Sango asked, curiously, not catching what he had said.

The monk shook his head. "Nothing," he assured her. He glanced at Inuyasha and knew the hanyou had heard him.

"But, there's still something I don't understand," Kagome stated a few days later.

She and Inuyasha snuggled together on a branch high above the camp. "In the book, it says that I am the Shikon no Tama, but the jewel is just around my neck. It's not inside my body."

He shrugged. After Kagome had awaken, Inuyasha had told her about what happened, including Koga's last words before he left. He also mentioned how her scent had changed while she was giving Koga his gift.

Now, it was all she would talk about. "Perhaps I should try swallowing the jewel," she suggested for the umpteenth time.

Inuyasha growled, "If you wanna swallow that damn jewel, you'll have to do it when I'm not around. And I'm not going anywhere."

"But Kaede said..."

"I don't give a rat's ass what Kaede said," he interrupted. "The chances of you choking on that damn jewel are too high for the risk. There has to be another way."

"Well, I'm out of suggestions," she snapped.

She took the jewel out from under her blouse and idly toyed with it. She knew Inuyasha was right. The jewel was far too large to fit down her throat, but she really didn't know what else to do. As she examined it, the jewel began to glow. A thought occured to her and she spoke it aloud, "Perhaps I need to do the same thing I did with Miroku and Koga. Only, focus on myself."

That was the first time since she had woken up what she had said anything that made sense. At least, in Inuyasha's opinion. He tightened his grip on her slightly and said, "We could try that after we come back from your mother's home."

She put the jewel back and leaned her head back so she could look up at him. "When are we going back?" she asked.

"We should be there within the next couple days," he told her. "For now, we'll rest."

She kissed his chin and closed her eyes. He gazed down at her. She looked so peaceful, so calm, so safe. And she was. He wasn't going to let anything bad happen to her, even if it cost him his life. It was a silent vow he made to himself.

He looked up at the heavens and thanked them. Never had he dreamed of being with someone like Kagome. She was more than any woman he had ever met, including Kikyo.

Kikyo. Surprisingly enough, the mention or thought of Kikyo no longer brought the same emotions to Inuyasha. He thought about what Kagome had said about helping Kikyo find peace so she could rest like she deserved.

In his mind, Inuyasha knew Kikyo was dead. All that remained of her was a walking corpse and now, after all these years, his heart was ready to accept that. Kikyo's passing had been a terrible tragedy. But it wasn't Inuyasha's fault. He knew that now. Was willing to accept it.

He thanked the heavens again. Kagome had given Miroku his life back. She had restored Koga's speed and agility. But for Inuyasha? She had given herself. He couldn't have asked for more. Though he had yet to claim her, he knew when the time came, she would give herself to him freely. When that time came, he would give her, not only his heart, but his soul as well. And he knew she would do the same.
