Chapter 24-Half Dog or Wolf?
Kayoko nodded her head in a solemn reply, as Inuyasha stared at Kikyo with awed eyes. Kikyo pulled herself back into the midst of the trees once more as she disappeared. Inuyasha stood there for a moment before running into the forest only to come out with nothing. He lowered his head in defeat until a thought dawned on him. The hanyou ran up the reverent Kayoko as he began to yell.
Inuyasha-I know that you're hiding her, where is she?
When no response passed through her lips and her eyes remained closed with her head down, Inuyasha attempted to strike her in anger. Fortunately, Koga ran up to stop his hand from reaching her face.
Inuyasha-Let go of me you mangy wolf!
Koga-You would've only hurt yourself if I didn't do that!
Inuyasha didn't understand and Koga knew it as he reached down and grabbed a pebble off the ground and threw it at Kayoko. The pebble seemed to hit a surface that vibrated a purple color when touched and the pebble was flung at 65 miles per hour passed Inuyasha's ear.
Miroku-She's meditating, and has put up a barrier. She's making sure that Kikyo is invisible by sight, smell and sound. Remarkable.
Inuyasha-Kayoko…I'm sorry. Will you talk to me?
No response came from the girl as her hair began to turn white and pointed ears appeared on the top of her head. Everyone gathered around the barrier and gasped at her appearance. Her eyes reopened slowly and showed honey amber eyes with a small black pupil identical to Inuyasha's. She waved her hand and the purple barrier disappeared. Kayoko brushed off her now short black kimono with silver lining.
Inuyasha-Kayoko…what's up with your hair and your ears…and your eyes?
Kayoko-I could ask you the same question (giggled).
Koga-But I thought that you were half wolf, not half dog.
Koga spat out the last three words as if they were poison and to him, they were.
Kayoko-It's a long story and frankly, I'm a little ashamed of it.
Kagome-Well you don't have to tell if you don't want to.
Sango-Yeah, we don't want to pressure you to tell us something you don't want to.
Kayoko looked up at the sky, puzzling everyone. When a small cloud finally came into view she placed her index finger and thumb at the edges of her mouth and whistled. The cloud raced down to meet them as if alive, it came down to Kayoko's right side as she bent down to pet it. In response it started panting as if a little puppy playing with it's master. Once it was satisfied with the petting she sat upon it.
Kayoko-When Nianna was young she loved to change forms, into any other type of a demon she could. Her all time favorite was morphing into a dog demon only so she could play with her own ears.
Kagome-See Inuyasha I'm not the only one who thinks that dog-ears are cute.
Inuyasha-Feh.
Kayoko-She was in dog hanyou form, when she heard a loud yelling. She raced across the forest to inspect the sound to see a dog hanyou fighting a mantis demon. The hanyou was only 10 or so and was struggling to slay the mantis. Nianna acted by slicing it with her claws while forgetting that she was still in demon form. The boy's name was Takuro and yelled at her for killing the mantis for he wanted a challenge while it was obvious that he was losing terribly. He but then felt obliged to lead her to his village and into his home for dinner and she did not want to deceive him into thinking that she had intentionally lied to him about being a dog hanyou, so stayed in her form for all times that she went to see the boy. He eventually found out when he went to seek her in her village and found her looking completely mortal, thus making her explain. Takuro was hurt for he thought that he'd found someone just like him, someone that he could really relate to in most ways. Nianna never said she was sorry for she simply vanished from Takuro's life after her secret was told and so pleaded to Kami everyday that she come back to talk to him. But she never did and was thus cursed to turn into a dog hanyou on the noon of a full moon until nightfall.
Inuyasha-So there's a time where you're just like me?
Kayoko-Yes, but there's also a time when I cannot call forth my demonic powers and thus remain in a mortal state for a period of time.
Inuyasha-But then why didn't I ever see you in dog demon form in the past.
Kayoko-We never met on the noon of a full moon, because those were the days that your mother would take you into the village until night came, for she knew my secret and also thought it best to never tell you until the right time arose.
Inuyasha-So you didn't think that I was capable of handling this information until now?
Kayoko-No, it's just that after I left I never got to see you again until now, well that's not true.
Inuyasha-You saw me before? When?
Kayoko-When you were sealed to the tree, I came to visit you everyday, but was ordered to never remove the arrow.
Koga-Never told to remove the arrow, by whom?
Kayoko turned to the fellow wolf and then back to Inuyasha, and heavily sighed.
Kayoko-The Keepers of Time. They never really liked Nianna because of her ability to move through time as she wished, thus meddling with the affairs of mortals and demons alike. So now they have set up certain guidelines for me and the other reincarnations to come of what we cannot change or do, or even with any of our powers. Simple slaying of demons won't make a difference, but all of you are important parts of history, both present and future and for Akeela and I…past.
Kagome-What do you mean the past?
Kayoko looked up at the sky in the west as the sun was setting and looked towards Koga.
Kayoko-I'm going to turn into a wolf demon when nightfall comes and cannot control this transformation.
She paused to look at Inuyasha for a moment as if trying to ask something but nothing came.
Kayoko-Inuyasha, you remember in the Sakura Garden when I couldn't control my powers, well that day was my birthday and every year on that day I first transform into a wolf demon then turn into the monster within Nianna. The one that she could never control, and if I skip a year which happened because you stopped me from spilling blood, I will doomed to turn into that monster exactly three days from my regular transformation to wolf. But the wolf transformation lasts a week and thus I need to stay among wolves for a while so that I will not harm you guys.
Koga-My tribe is willing to take you in Kayoko; it would be our honor.
Kayoko-That's what I assumed, thank you and I shall see you in a week Inuyasha, Kagome, Miroku, Sango and Shippo.
Inuyasha-But what's to stop you from killing them Kayoko?
Kayoko-There's a ceremony in which wolves can perform, it's forbidden to speak of outside of a tribe, for it differs and I am not accustomed to the ways of Koga's tribe.
Akeela-Wait, where am I gonna go?
Koga-You're coming with us.
Akeela-Why exactly, I mean I didn't even know I was a wolf until today.
Kayoko-We need you for the ceremony.
Koga-And besides there's gathering of wolves in France tomorrow and we'll need you there.
Inuyasha-YOU'RE TAKING KAYOKO TO FRANCE!
Koga-She needs to come.
Kayoko-Why do I need to come.
Koga-Six of the strongest wolves from a pack go to the annual gathering to talk at these peace conferences, how to manage and keep peace through wolf lands and you're a good negotiator Kayoko. Plus, we talk about the issue of hanyous.
Kayoko-I'm going.
Koga-I knew you'd say that.
Akeela-But why do I have to go to the gathering?
Koga took Kayoko's arm and started leading her away and was talking sideways to Akeela.
Koga-To be either Ginta or Hakaku's date.
Akeela was stunned but ran after the two wolves shouting at Koga. The Inu Gang looked at each other and also began running towards the couple.
