Chapter 11: Beyond Lies the Promised Land
Inuyasha smiled blissfully. He latched onto Kagome's arm and prepared to jump. Into the black abyss they fell, landing softly on the other side.
Inuyasha looked up, he saw the night sky, not the roof of the well house. "We made it. But when are we?" he allowed Kagome to climb up first, enjoying the view as he climbed up behind her.
Noticing the smirk on his face when they emerged from the well Kagome rolled her eye's "Hentai." there was no one around. Nothing more precisely.
Kagome and Inuyasha wandered around the forest, finally coming to a section with soul-collectors. "Kikyou".
"What was that Inuyasha?" Kagome turned around to look at Inuyasha. He grabbed her by the waist and jumped into a tree.
"Inuyasha. . . dearest." Kikyou walked up to Inuyasha, he was sitting on the ground, looking thoroughly miserable.
"Kikyou, I really don't feel like dealing with you right now, please go away." his voice attempted softness, but it was ill-fated.
"Inuyasha? Is that girl more important than me?" the Inuyasha in the tree stifled a laugh as he thought about how many times he had heard those words from the dead priestess. Kagome watched, simply fascinated.
"Kikyou. . . She is gone. . ."
"She will come back I am sure, she always does. Comes back to ruin my life."
"You are dead!" Inuyasha stood up and looked at Kikyou.
"Come with me Inuyasha. There is nothing left for you here." For a second Inuyasha accepted that. He was prepared to say 'yes' to Kikyou and fall into the pits of hell.
"No. Because in five hundred years she will be around again. I can see her then. I can wait. I will wait." he replied defiantly.
"But you would not wait for me. Our love could not be stopped. I came back didn't I?"
"Kikyou. . . You didn't come back, you died and were wrongfully reborn of clay. What we had wasn't love either. If it were, you never would have thought that I betrayed you, and same goes for me. We would have lived together in happiness till the end of our days, whether in eternity or on earth. But we didn't. Because it wasn't meant to be Kikyou."
"Inuyasha." emotion seemed to come from Kikyou. For the first time since she had been reborn, she looked as though she would cry. "If I can't have you. . ." Kikyou stormed off. Inuyasha sat down on the grass, where he was before, and continued to stare as though the interruption had never occurred.
The Inuyasha in the tree watched Kikyou storm off. He looked at Kagome who looked back at him very confused. "I'll explain when we get back. Come on." he motioned for Kagome to get on his back. As she did he jumped, from one tree to the next, following Kikyou.
She stopped at the well. Inuyasha watched as she muttered something at the well. Inuyasha wondered what she was doing. "If Kagome even tries to remember you Inuyasha, she will forget. She will never remember, and the only key to help her, you will never figure out. It is with her, on the other side, probably locked away and you wont find it, or her. There is no more Inuyasha to her." Kikyou smiled vindictively. She closed her eye's and a giant gaping whole opened up feet from the well. Her soul catchers swarmed around her as she lowered into the ground.
"Well that could possibly be the weirdest thing I've ever seen." Kagome said simply as she watched the hole close up again.
"Okay, let me explain. No, there is too much, let me sum up. That was Kikyou, kind of an ex-girlfriend. She died, came back, tried to take me to hell for years. You two kind of had a bond, but kind of hated each other."
"I didn't hate her. I felt bad for her." Kagome felt a wave of shock over her again. "I remember her! She was tricked, by Naraku! I always had a doubt that you loved her, and only accepted me as a second best." Kagome furrowed her brow, trying to remember something else.
Nothing came to her.
"I am so happy you are remembering things. Slowly but surely eh?" he smiled and Kagome returned the gesture. Inuyasha wanted to say more, to say that he loved Kagome twice as much as he could ever love Kikyou, but he couldn't bring himself to scare her off again. "Come on, let's get home." Inuyasha leapt off the tree branch, Kagome on his back, and jumped into the well.

"Kikyou said you had the key to your memories. But what could it be?"
"My mind?" Kagome thought. That seemed reasonable to her.
"No, she said it was probably locked away." Inuyasha sat on the ground, at the base of the gods tree, Kagome close to him.
"You don't suppose she meant a real key?"
"No, metaphorical. But still an object?"
The riddle was driving them crazy. They thought about it for an hour before Kagome finally gave up. She leaned against Inuyasha's chest and felt a surge of pain through her head. The first headache she had recalled to be so intense in almost a year. She suddenly sat up and it stopped.
"What is wrong?" Inuyasha sat up, he had been laying back against the tree trunk.
"One of those headache's the ones you said I get when I 'kiss' or am near another boy. Only it was worse." she rubbed her head gently.
"Maybe it is from trying to remember so much."
"No, it is gone now. Better keep thinking." Inuyasha relaxed slightly. Kagome lay back down on his chest and felt the pain again.
"Oh, what in the gods name? I think it's your shirt or something. Maybe I am allergic to it? I don't know." Kagome had sat up again and Inuyasha looked down at his shirt. He noticed a small round circle underneath it.
His eye's lit up and he pulled out the Shikon no Tama. "Kagome. The key." he took it off his neck. Kagome looked at the jewel.
"The Shikon jewel is the key?" she asked.
"It has to be. Kikyou thinks, or rather thought, that you still had it. But you didn't, I had it. That is why we were confused, because I held the metaphorical key, not you." Inuyasha held out the jewel.
Kagome reached for it but the second her hand came close she felt the headache. "It hurts my head. I can't touch it."
"I want you to remember, but not if it is going to cause you pain." he began to put the necklace back around his head. Kagome looked at the rosary already around his neck. That looked familiar too.
"Screw that! I am tired of knowing things, but not knowing why. Let me see the jewel." Inuyasha looked into her eye's they held only determination.
"I don't want you to be in pain." he said with genuine concern.
"Don't worry." she leaned close to him and kissed him. Before he could say anything more she grabbed the jewel from his hand.
It didn't hurt like she thought it would, or rather it hurt like hell, but it was so painful it almost seemed soothing. She allowed herself to feel every feeling that the jewel forced through her body. She saw image upon image. . . Demon's battling, Miroku, Sango, Shippo (as a young fox) Lady Kaede, Sesshomaru, Naraku, Kikyou, Kouga (he is the man from the cafe. . . her mind quickly noted) the well, the Gods tree, the Shikon no Tama, the crows foot that broke the Shikon no Tama, the hot springs she loved, Inuyasha, Inuyasha and her on the night they mated. Demon Inuyasha, human Inuyasha. Image after image, as though a scrap book had been left open and a strong wind scattered all the pictures.
Kagome hadn't realized her eye's had closed. She watched the images like a movie. When they stopped she felt her eye's open, more of their own free will than of her command. She saw Inuyasha sitting in front of her. She suddenly took a deep breath as though she hadn't breathed the whole time. Inuyasha had a look of great concern.
*Will she have remembered anything, or will she still not know. What if that erased her memory even more?*
All of Inuyasha's ill-conceived worries suddenly drifted away as Kagome lunged onto him. Kissing him happily.
"Inuyasha," she kissed him, "I remember," she kissed him again, "you are my mate," another kiss, "and my love." a final kiss that didn't want to end. Inuyasha smiled and when the need for air got the better of the couple, he still held her close.
