Chapter 18: For the Love of the Broccoli
"Inu . . . Yash . . .a " Kagome breathed, barely audible. Kikyou held her pinned to the stone wall. Gasping with her last energy she saw the image, forever engraved in her mind. Inuyasha . . . laughing.
"You think I would save you over Kikyou? You stupid wench." Inuyasha kissed Kikyou and as Kagome wept she heard a dull beeping. A beeping which slowly grew, louder and louder.
Kagome opened her eyes to the persistent yelping of her alarm clock. She had to work at The Entertainment House today. She rolled over but the annoying machine was clicked off before she had a chance to hit the snooze button. She saw Inuyasha's arm reaching back across her, his eyes were still half-closed and he yawned into the pillow. Kagome smiled at him. She couldn't be mad at him for what he did, she couldn't even really be sad anymore. It was two hundred years ago. Though, it did bug her that he was 'allowed' to cheat on her and she couldn't date another guy without getting a headache.
Kagome's thoughts were interrupted as the sound of her second alarm clock rang through the bedroom. She had two because quite frequently the first would not work. The second, programmed with the radio on it, began playing a soft rock song.
don't like to be alone in the nightI don't like to hear I'm wrong when I'm rightI don't like to have the rain on my shoesI do love youI do love you
don't like to see the sky painted grayI don't like when nothing's going my wayI don't like to be with the one with the bluesI do love youI do love you
love everything about the way your loving meway you lay your head upon my shoulder when you sleepI love to kiss you in the rainI love everything you doI do
don't like to turn the radio on, just to find I missed my favorite songI don't like to be the last with the newsI do love youI do love you
love everything about the way your loving meway you lay your head upon my shoulder when you sleepI love to kiss you in the rainI love everything you doI do
I don't like to be alone in the nightI don't like to hear I'm wrong when I'm rightI don't like to have the rain on my shoesI do love youI do love youI do love youI do love you ~
Kagome listened to the whole song, though she had heard it before. She busied herself with getting ready for work; picking out clothes and brushing her hair. Inuyasha was obviously awake but he didn't move much from his original position on the bed.
Kagome turned off the radio and walked over to the bed and placed a soft kiss on Inuyasha's forehead before walking out the apartment to work.

Another mindless day in Tokyo. Kagome was watching a Yuu Yuu Hakusho repeat, there was never any business on a Tuesday . . . at nine in the morning!
"Boring . . . Boring . . . Boring . . ." Kagome repeated over and over again, waiting for someone to walk through the doors and break her from her boredom.
As though a gift from the gods, in walked . . . someone.
"Excuse me miss, my daughter needs to use the bathroom." Kagome's brief happiness was dashed as she realized the girl didn't actually want to busy her.
Kagome sighed deeply, the bathroom was only for employees, but the little girl looked like she really had to go. "Sure, right this way." Kagome smiled and led the girl into the bathroom.
"Thank you so much." Kagome waited until the mother and daughter came back out.
"Have a great day." she said brightly as the woman and child left.
Kagome continued singing her 'bored' song. She gazed down at the ring on her finger, it was ancient, and so very majestic. The thought that she would be legally bonded to Inuyasha seemed to make every other thought irrelevant. Kagome glanced at her watch it was now . . . nine o' six. She sighed deeply and continued twirling her engagement ring around her finger.

"Kikyou . . . "
"Yes Inuyasha I am bugging you again, will you please open the door? I saw the hussy leave so I know you are alone." Kikyou said in an irritated tone through the door.
Inuyasha looked around, as though an answer would pop out at him. Of course, all he saw was pictures on the wall of Kagome, Kagome's family, Kagome and him, everything screamed 'Kagome' and he chose to listen to them.
"No Kikyou, this isn't my apartment I have no right to let you in." he stated flatly.
"Then will you come out?" she asked. "Please." Inuyasha threw away his better judgment and opened the door.
"What?" he crossed his arms and leaned on the doorframe.
"There is some . . . explaining I want to do before my time is up."
"What are you talking about?"
"You see, I . . . I . . . I can't talk to you when you look so damn sexy in the doorframe." Kikyou eyed him up and down greedily.
"WHAT?" he stood up straight and backed up, closing the door. "Talk" he commanded.
"Inuyasha! I am not talking through the door!"
"Then you have nothing to say!" he knew she was the only one who could answer his questions about . . . everything, but he couldn't be having her getting all excited over him. "If what you have to say is that important, tell Kagome too."
"Fine lets go to the little hussy." Kikyou said in a less than thrilled tone.
"Stop calling her a Hussy. Baka." Inuyasha opened the door and stepped out. "Come on she's at work." he closed and locked the door before leading Kikyou out of the building.

"Bored . . . bored . . . hey it's nine thirty only seven and a half hours left." Kagome had put in a movie now and the time seemed to be going a millisecond faster.
Suddenly Kagome's vision was blocked, she gasped in surprised as she realized the sudden darkness. "What the -"
"Guess who?" a sweet voice whispered in her ear, followed by a soft scoff.
"Inuyasha? But you aren't alone." Kagome stated matter-of-factly.
"Hey sweetie." he turned her around in the swinging chair and gave her a small kiss. Kagome broke away when she saw the second party she had previously detected.
"What is she doing here?" Kagome asked, rather rudely.
"She says she has answers for us; and I know you have questions. At least, I do."
"Fine, lets here it then." Kagome crossed her arms and looked to Kikyou. Then she realized there weren't enough chairs for Inuyasha to sit down (she didn't really care about Kikyou). "Inuyasha, sweetie, would you like to sit down?" she stood up and he looked at her with a devilish grin.
"Sure. Thanks mate." he sat down and quickly tugged Kagome onto his lap. He knew she would sit on the counter but he wanted Kikyou to feel as awkward as possible. Kagome giggled when she was suddenly pulled back. She soon realized Inuyasha's ploy and went along.
"So Kikyou, what did you want to tell us?"
She looked around before answering, "Well, what do you want to know Inuyasha?" she looked to him with, what she thought, was a cute expression. It came off looking more like she was going to throw up.
"Everything. Why did Kagome loose her memories? Where did you come from? I thought you went back to hell or something I hadn't heard from or seen you in almost two hundred years. Why are you marrying her brother? Anything you think would help answer our questions." Inuyasha tried to cross his arms, and succeeded, though it caused Kagome to have a rather significant block to her air supply.
"Uh, Yash." she chocked out.
"Oh, Gomen." he released her and she could breathe evenly again.
Kikyou, ignoring the little display, began speaking. "Fine, here is what happened, and here is what I know. I loved Inuyasha, that day that he was to become human, my love for him couldn't have been stronger. He was everything to me, my only real reason for living. When I thought that he had betrayed me, I couldn't stand it, so I let myself die, rather than use the jewel to save myself. I wanted to be with him, in the next life; but he wasn't dead, the arrow only put him in to a dormant sleep. I was alone, until there was you Kagome. You became me, and I no longer existed. It was as though I were in a sleepless dream for hundreds of years, while you were being forged and taking my soul.
Then, as we all know, I was reborn, of clay, I had no reason to be on this earth; except, to get back Inuyasha. My Inuyasha. I knew he still had strong feelings for me, because to him it was as though it were only a few months later, not five hundred years. I tried to get him to come with me, but something was always stopping him. For a while there, it was the 'hunt for the jewel shards'. Soon, I stopped buying into his lies. I knew that the reason he wanted to stay was you. That was obvious to anyone who had eyes, or a heart. Believe me, at one point in my meaningless existence I had a heart.
So, I wandered, living off souls because you had taken mine back. Well, most of it. I still have a piece, which reminds me constantly that I am you, you are me, and as long as Inuyasha is with one of us, he will always have both of us." she paused to take a deep breath and Kagome looked behind her to Inuyasha, Kagome knew that what Kikyou said made sense, he would always be with Kikyou but . . .
"No Kikyou. If he was with you, he would not be with me. I have your soul, you don't have mine."
"Yes. Anyway, for the years you were with us, I noticed that you and Inuyasha were growing closer and closer. I was even close by on the night he asked you to be his mate. Could I have cried I am sure I would have. Then, when the jewel was complete, I could not have been happier. I thought you would leave, and never return to ruin my afterlife again. I saw you and Inuyasha, being all affectionate by the well, he obviously wasn't paying attention to his senses because he would have noticed I was mere yards away. I heard you say you would come back in a few days. I wanted to lunge out and attack you. But I held my composure, and waited. You jumped in, somehow leaving behind the Shikon no Tama. I saw Inuyasha pick it up and walk back to my sisters hut. I walked to the well and made sure you were really gone before going after Inuyasha. For a few days he moped about like his life was over, he didn't even want to spar with the demon slayer he was so fond of. Finally, I asked him, once again, to come with me to Hell, where we could be happy and he wouldn't have to dwell on the fact that you left him. He seemed to accept my offer, but then he decided to wait for you. For five hundred long years. I just about killed him right there, but I couldn't. I walked back to the well and blocked it, I didn't want you coming back for him. If I couldn't have him, no one could. Now, I went to Hell, there was no point in me following him anymore, and I knew he would never give in. This is where my plan became tricky."

"Lets see, cabbage? The runt doesn't like cabbage. This is why Inuyasha always dose the shopping for me. I hate shopping." Sesshomaru grumbled as he picked up a head of lettuce, inspecting it for any sign of decay.
"Broccoli looks fresh today." a girl commented from beside him.
"Mm." he replied emotionless.
He looked over at the girl and realized she was a demon, a cute one. She had bouncy blonde hair, she was about five six with a medium frame. She was wearing a concealing spell, but that was obvious to anyone of the demon persuasion. Sesshomaru, being the bold demon he was decided a little flirting wouldn't hurt. "It does doesn't it. Not as fresh as you." he mentally smacked himself. That was quite possibly the dumbest pick-up line ever.
"You are quite the flatterer, I think." the girl blushed deeply and picked up a few tomatoes.
"I'm sorry, I'm not very good at flirting. My name is Sesshomaru Tenkai." he extended his hand for her.
"My name is Nyoko Yunokawa." she shook his hand sweetly.
"Your hands are amazingly soft." he stated, almost as though he were in a trance. She giggled softly, the blush that had lightly stained her cheeks, growing deeper.
"You are quite sweet Sesshomaru-Sama."
"This is a bit awkward, since we've only just met, but, would you like to go out to dinner with me some night?"
"Oh, that is really sweet Sesshomaru-Sama, but-" Nyoko began.
"Mated? Should have sensed it."
"I was. Once. He died." she paused briefly, "How did you know I was a demon?"
"I am too. By the aura I'm sensing I'm about a hundred years older." he chuckled, voicing such an age difference sounded so odd.
"Oh," she smiled again, "I would love to go to dinner with you Sesshomaru-Sama. But, I have a son and most people who find out I have a son, they run away." she looked down at the ground, shuffling her feet nervously.
"I am not one of those people. I have a son, adopted son. His name is Shippo, and I look after my half-brother Inuyasha, who is more of a child then Shippo." he had the emotionless mask, but at this he seemed to smile.
"If you accept my son, then I accept you. I would love to have dinner Sesshomaru-Sama." the girl brightened immediately.
"Please, call me Sess, everyone else does." the pair walked along the produce section, "Do you like Ramen?" he asked, coming to the next section of boxed goods. Nyoko nodded, "My little brother can't get enough of them. One time, he was having lunch with the Miko, that is his fiance, and she prepared this wonderful lunch and all he cared about was the ramen. I tell you he is a complete baka when it comes to that. What about you? Tell me something about your son. Your mate, yourself."
"Well, my mate was a horrible demon. He forced me to mate with him, but I love my son. His name is Kumanosuke. He is the best thing in my life. He adores ramen as well, he actually sounds a lot like your half brother -"
The two walked and talked while they shopped. Sesshomaru carried her groceries to her car and packed it for her. "Well, I'll see Saturday night Nyoko." Sesshomaru kissed Nyoko's hand and she blushed again.
"Indeed. At six thirty?" Sesshomaru nodded. "Arigatou. Have a lovely day."
"You too Nyoko." Sesshomaru smiled and got into his black Montero.
