Chapter 8
~~Through the Bone Eater's Well and Beyond~~
Kagome stomped into her room and threw her backpack on the floor as the young female hanyou followed. Hana had been following her all day, even to school. At one point Kagome considered her worse than InuYasha. Waking up to find Hana in her kitchen eating cereal didn't alleviate the pain from the headache from crying so much the night before, which she still suffered from, unfortunately.
`Geez, I took practically half the bottle of aspirin; why aren't I feeling better?'
Her question was answered by a loud blast of music - caused of course by Hana - and Kagome only sighed. Hana hadn't said a thing all day, but her silence was only replaced by the annoying sounds of other things - and people - that she had constantly been gaping at all afternoon. While Kagome was in class, Hana merely wandered around. After school, she had found Hana sitting in the gym watching the Kendo club practice, shaking her head the whole time.
“Those guys need to shape up.” She said to Kagome when she'd joined her on the bleacher. She also shook her head at the cheerleaders. “They need to shape up too. Maybe throw in some more flips and stuff.” Kagome couldn't believe that Hana was criticizing things she barely knew about.
Kagome brought herself back to the present long enough to trudge over to the stereo and turn it down. Hana wore a sheepish grin as her apology. Kagome plopped down on her bed while Hana continued to fiddle with the stereo. The tip of her tongue stuck out to the side in deep concentration while she pressed the small indentation on the top of the stereo that opened the CD player. Kagome barely raised an eyebrow. She knew what Hana was going to do. She was going to pick up the CD, sniff it, attempt to chew it, and when she figured out she couldn't eat everything she picks up, she'll toss it aside. Sure enough, she picked up the CD gingerly and sniffed it. She most likely would have bitten it had Kagome decided she really liked that CD and intervened. Once more Hana grinned sheepishly.
“I'm going to go see what Souta is doing.” Hana spoke carefully before edging slowly towards the door.
“Have fun,” Kagome waved tiredly, just wanting some peace and quiet. She rubbed her eyes with her palms and flopped tiredly down on her bed. Her period was so light she could go back any time she wanted. It's just that, well, she didn't want to. She wanted to stay and just be a normal almost 16 year-old girl. She knew she loved InuYasha, but she couldn't stand knowing that he didn't love her back. Or did he? Kagome remembered the kiss he gave her only a few days before. It certainly seemed like he loved her then. Of course, Kikyou was still in the picture, wasn't she? It didn't seem like InuYasha was going to give her up anytime soon. Maybe she was the one unwanted. She couldn't count the many times she felt that.
`It's the right thing to do. I'll send Hana back with the Shikon shards. She doesn't have to know; I'll just put them in something and give it to her. Maybe some food…'
Kagome immediately nixed that idea since Hana would most likely eat that on the way back. That could be bad. She would have to think of a different way to send them - the shards and Hana - back to Sengoku Jidai later. Right now, she had homework, and lots of it. Kagome stood up, but not before she heard the telltale crashing of something made of glass and a shriek. She rolled her eyes and sighed as she walked downstairs to asses the damage. It was going to be a long night…

InuYasha, Sesshoumaru, and Kirara were following Hana's scent at breakneck speed when InuYasha abruptly stopped. Slowly he turned his head to the right, where the well was located. One sniff told him that she had jumped into the well, and had most likely gone through the other side.
“Shit,” he muttered. Sesshoumaru was watching him, but he couldn't just jump into the well with him there.
“So,” behind him Sesshoumaru drawled, “you think she jumped into that well? It would not surprise me, to say the least. She always was a bit strange.”
InuYasha tightly shut his eyes and heaved a long-suffering sigh. That girl was supposed to be here to help him, right? `Then why the hell is she just making my life worse?' The bitch would definitely pay. He stared down into the black abyss that was the Bone Eater's well. What could he do? InuYasha couldn't go get Hana without Sesshoumaru figuring it out, but it was probable that he would figure it out eventually.
“Well?” Sesshoumaru asked behind him. “Is she down there?” InuYasha knew that Sesshoumaru was far enough away to not be able to tell, and didn't move an inch at the question. He merely turned around and replied, “No.”
Sesshoumaru's flawless countenance was not marred, but the concern was there. He silently turned and began walking towards the village. Kirara glanced back at InuYasha before going as well. InuYasha took one last look at the well and shook his head before he too, headed off towards the village. `Please don't let her really be there…'

Kagura thoughtfully tapped her fan against her jaw. Naraku was up to something, but what exactly he wanted with those three misfits - the monk, demon slayer, and Kitsune - was totally beyond her. Still, she had her suspicions. She had heard that a new demon was traveling with InuYasha's misfit pack. Kagura also heard that his brother had started accompanying them.
`Hmm, maybe I should pay them a visit myself…' The thought ran through her head before she dismissed it. `If I did something to mess up Naraku's plan, I would probably never get my heart back.'
Therefore, instead of stirring up trouble, Kagura opted to stand there and gaze out the window. She sighed. She wished more than anything to leave, but when that would happen, she didn't know.
`I hope it's soon.' She thought. She could just imagine it; she could taste the freedom of her soul, of the wind. How she longed to fly away and never come back. Kagura was dreaming of what her life would be like when she left when a blood-curdling laugh from the lower part of the castle broke her out of her reverie. Sighing, she turned on her heel and headed to the dungeon; she assumed Naraku would want her to dispose of the bodies when he was done.
`Please, someone get me out of here!'

“This is fun, Kagome!” Hana giggled, bouncing down the crowded sidewalk. Kagome followed along, a bemused smile on her face. Hana had pushed Kagome just a little too far at home, so she decided to take her for a quick tour around the city while they were here.
`I should come here more often!' Hana thought as she hummed happily to herself, regardless of the fact she was human and people were staring at her strange outfit. Kagome had tried to get her to wear something normal, but Hana was afraid that her clothes would be thrown out if she handed them over, and she was most likely right. The only thing Kagome had convinced her to do was turn human, and Hana complied because she didn't want to complicate things. Now, her eyes big with wonder, she slowed to a walk to take it all in.
“I have to wonder,” She said to no one in particular, “If Sesshoumaru and InuYasha are still alive in this time.”
Kagome came up to the right of her and kept pace. It was definitely an interesting thing to think about.
“Do you want to look for them?” She asked unexpectedly. Hana swiveled her head to look at Kagome, and pondered her question.
“…Yeah, let's go look for them.”
Kagome steered her for the nearest phone booth, stepped inside, and flipped through the phone book. She stopped flipping the pages.
“Wait….what would his last name be?”
Hana looked puzzled. “Try his first name.” Kagome looked doubtful but tried anyway.
“No luck,” she sighed.
“Try InuYasha's name now.”
Kagome started flipping through the pages once more and stopped in the “I” section. Her finger traveled down the page and stopped at a name. Hana looked where her finger rested. The name was InuTaisho, Sesshoumaru and beneath it was InuTaisho, Kagura. Beneath that were two more InuTaisho names she didn't recognize. Pushing the door open with a bang, Hana ran out, Kagome yelling after her. Hana felt no pain, just anger. Angry at the fact Sesshoumaru would betray her the way he did.
`That bastard!' She fumed. `He leads me like that, and then he mates with Kagura and has two pups with her! Well, when I get through with that bastard he'll be wishing he were dead!'
Her youkai quickly interjected. `Hold on, Hana, think about the concept of time -`
`Screw the concept of time! He's going to die!' Hana broke it off.
She ran faster down the street, Kagome's voice lost in the shuffle. Hana didn't care, she just had to find Sesshoumaru. Ducking into an alley, she slipped on her ring. Feeling the transformation, she leapt onto a roof and scoped out the area. A long ways past the innumerable rooftops was a high hill surrounded with fir trees and a large house sitting on top. Hana made her guess and leapt onto the next roof. She stopped. She couldn't just leave Kagome alone, could she? Her conscience got the best of her and she turned around. Back on the sidewalk, Hana found Kagome within the mix of scents. She grabbed Kagome's hand and pulled her back down the alley.
“Hana, whatever you're thinking about doing, stop it. You don't have any right to do this - “
“Oh, so I don't have the right to talk to the man who told me he loves me? Is that it?” Hana looked downright pissed now. “Well, he'll just have to get over it, won't he?” At that, Hana grabbed Kagome and jumped onto the roofs once more.
Twenty minutes later, Hana touched down in the group of fir trees surrounding the house. This had to be it. She could almost smell him. Telling Kagome to stay put, Hana inched forward. She knew anyone there would be able to smell her. She stayed low and crept over to where a presence seemed strongest. She stopped under a window and slowly looked through it. She saw a large dining area with an enormous oak table and chairs. A large, spider-like light hung over the table. Hana made sure there were no people around, and jumped to hang on the second-story windowsill. She barely struggled to pull herself up and look in, and saw Sesshoumaru sitting at his desk, alert that she was there. Pushing her chin up, the window slid open. Before she could say anything though, Sesshoumaru spoke.
“Go in the front door like a civilized person, please.”
Hana shrugged inwardly and dropped back to the ground. She walked to front door and knocked. A tall, muscular man opened the door and, in a deep voice, said, “Skye? Why are you knocking? Did you forget your key again?” He opened the door wide and she stepped in. He continued to talk. “Now, I like the ears, but I don't think mom and dad are going to go crazy for the bleached hair.”
Hana stood there almost awkwardly, someone with her grace did not usually do. Staring at him, she searched for resemblance. He had Sesshoumaru's build, eyes, and deep, resonating voice; his hair oddly resembled hers. Tearing her gaze away, she ignored the man's question and marched up the stairs towards Sesshoumaru's scent. He must have noticed she was leaving because he shut the door, and his scent slowly faded as she ascended the stairs. Hana pressed her palm against the door Sesshoumaru was behind. Feeling the smooth wood beneath her fingers, she gradually pushed the door open and stepped tentatively inside. Sesshoumaru sat at his desk, writing out something, and did not look up, only saying, “Take a seat.”
Hana's faced twisted with confusion as she stood in front of his desk, instead of sitting down. Sesshoumaru looked up at her with a bored countenance. If Hana were to have everything but one memory erased, what happened next would be the one she would want to keep. Sesshoumaru stood up quickly, then stepped back, tripping over his chair, and immediately fell back into it. To Hana, it was a humorous, once in a lifetime experience, but the seriousness of the situation prevented her from enjoying it.
“Never thought you'd see me again - is that why you're so surprised?” She said coolly.
Sesshoumaru still stared at her with a frozen countenance, and Hana walked around his desk to get in his face. Unable to swivel the chair towards herself, she leaned over him, their noses almost connecting.
“What's wrong? So shocked to see me you've actually succumbed to showing emotion?”
Words finally managed to slip past his lips. “You…you're not supposed
to - “
“Don't even bother finishing that sentence, Sesshoumaru. The fact that you would reproduce two bastard children with that spawn of a pathetic excuse for a demon is more than I can stand to think about.” Hana's eyes narrowed.
At that moment, a young girl stepped into the room. The air became awkward and still as Hana whipped her face around to see the familiar scent that filled her nose.
“What the hell are you doing to my dad, you whore?!” The young girl yelled indignantly.
Hana stood upright, clearly ignoring the outburst. “You…you are the offspring of Sesshoumaru?” A deadly intent played across her face.
The girl stood her ground. “I'm adopted. Nonetheless, I still don't appreciate your grubby little hands on my dad.”
“You certainly are not Rin, so I assume you are the one that boy called `Skye'?”
Skye's profile was that of puzzlement. “Boy? Oh, you must mean Kai!”
“Kai? Yes, I suppose you're right….Though, I must ask one more pressing question: why do you look like me?”
This question brought more silence in the room. Sesshoumaru stood and cleared his throat.
“Hana,” Behind her, Sesshoumaru found his voice and spoke clearly and with authority. “You are not supposed to be here. Skye… is -.”
Hana whipped around, a harsh sound resounding from the hand that struck Sesshoumaru's face. Wild wind flew in from the open window, whipping her hair around her face. Hana turned to Skye.
“I will spare you for the time being.”
Hana heard a single word uttered from Skye, “Leave.”
She needed no more words. Sesshoumaru, now staring at Hana with what could only be indifference, stepped aside, allowing her to pass. She swung herself onto the ledge, pausing only for a moment, gazing at the car coming up the drive. She knew that somehow, Kagura was in that vehicle. Pushing off the ledge, Hana landed softly on the ground below. She took off into the forest, collected Kagome, and went back to the shrine.

“I swear I'm leaving right now, Kagome! Don't you even try to stop me!”
Hana and Kagome walked up the stairs to the shrine - Hana stomped on each step - and Hana had been ranting and raving about how Sesshoumaru was going to catch hell when she saw him next.
`Well, this will be easier than I thought. All I have to do is fake something, send back some food, and…' Kagome chose not to finish her thought.
“Hey Hana,” She spoke up as they reached the entryway. “I'm still not feeling all that well, so I think I'll just send you back with some food. Okay?”
Hana raised an eyebrow. “Okay, Kagome. That's fine.” She said hesitantly. She took off her boots and carried them to the kitchen; there was no point leaving them in the entryway when she was leaving through the back door.
Kagome followed her into the kitchen and began to dig through the cabinets for chips and other snack foods.
“Hey Kagome? I'm going to go use that thing you use in that room upstairs.”
Kagome, amused, said, “You mean the toilet…in the bathroom?” She supplied.
“Yeah, that thing. I'm gonna go use it and I'll be back.”
Kagome saw this as her chance and waited until she heard the click of the door. Quietly but quickly creeping up the stairs, she jogged down the hall to her room, closed the door behind her and locked it. Hurrying over to her desk drawer, she pulled out the bottle containing the jewel shards.
`This is it. I have to do this. I have to do what's best.'
Kagome hurried back downstairs to the kitchen, clutching the bottle. She grabbed a box of pocky and stuffed it inside. Closing the box, she shoved to the bottom of a box and piled other food on top. Kagome made sure she put extra ramen in for InuYasha and Hana, who had confessed a few days before she loved it more than life itself. Hana bounded down the stairs just as Kagome closed the flaps on the box.
“Why aren't you putting it in that giant yellow pack of yours?” She asked, coming up beside Kagome.
“I told you, I'm not going back just yet. I'll be back in a few more days, don't worry. Just take this box with you, and it should tide you guys over for a while.”
Hana still looked unconvinced, so Kagome took charge. She shoved the box into Hana's arms and started to push her out the door. She only stopped and waited for Hana to put on her shoes. While she waited, she too slipped on some boots.
Kagome walked Hana to the well house, reassuring her that she would indeed return in a few days. Hana jumped into the well with the box, and the blue light told Kagome that she was gone.
A single tear rolled down her cheek as she walked back to the house.

Here it is! The next chapter! I'm not completely satisfied with it, so I might be making changes to it in the future. Until then, enjoy yourself!
