Meanwhile back in the village Kagome had a troubled mind. Her senior year was going to begin in just a few days. She had spent almost her entire school break here in the feudal era with her friends. Even when she was in school she barely managed her classes. And she began to feel left out of everything that was going on. She was always struggling to catch up right before test, when she could make it back to take one, and she had missed her junior prom. She decided to go for a walk alone.
InuYasha had noticed Kagome's distress and that she had wondered off on her own. Using his nose he followed keeping himself hidden at first. Before either of them knew it they made it back to the well. Kagome stood staring down into the darkness. InuYasha quietly made his way to her.
“Kagome, something wrong?” he asked concerned.
“InuYasha, I didn't know you were here.” She tried to salvage a smile. “Nothing's wrong.”
“Are you sure?” He asked knowing she was lying. “You're not planning on going back home are you?”
Kagome stood silent and turned her eyes back to the well before her. InuYasha continued, “You know that we'll get Naraku soon.” Hoping in someway this would discourage her thoughts of going home.
“I know.” She said still staring into the well. With tears beginning to push there way out of the corners of her eyes she turned to InuYasha.
“K-Kagome?” InuYasha stuttered. Kagome walked toward InuYasha slowly. She took him by the hand.
“InuYasha.” She said. “You know I want to be here…be with you.” The tears began to fall freely.
“And I want you here.” He said. “I need you here Kagome.”
Kagome looked deep into his eyes a faint smile through her tears. “InuYasha I have to go back.”
“Why?!” he asked with anger rising in his voice.
“It's my senior year.” She said in almost a silent whisper. “It's the most important grade of school. In the last three years I have been barely getting by in school, this year will determine my future.”
InuYasha's golden orbs began to gloss over. He pulled Kagome to him and hugged her tightly as if he would never let her go. “Kagome don't go.” He said chocking back his tears.
“InuYasha I won't be gone long. I will still come back on the weekends, but during the week I need to be at home, in school.” She pulled back to look into his eyes. InuYasha dropped his head looking to the ground letting his long bangs cover his eyes so she could not see his tears. “And if I do well, I won't have to go the full year and I can come back and stay as long as I want.” Again she tried to force a smile.
InuYasha looked up and Kagome saw the tears in his eyes. She reached up with her hand to cup it against his face. InuYasha turned his face away before she touched it. Kagome froze as her already tear stained face began to flooded from more of her own tears. InuYasha couldn't take it anymore and pulled away from her darting off into the woods. Kagome sat on the edge of the well and cried with her face in her hands.
After she had cried her fill and tried to get most of it out she headed back to the village. To her surprise InuYasha wasn't there and no one had seen him. She decided to stay the night and return home the next day. When daybreak came Kagome struggled to revive herself. She had a sleepless night worrying about the decision she had made. Maybe she should just go home for a few days and then come back. She searched for InuYasha but he was no where near the hut.
She took a walk through the village and asked a few villagers if they had seen InuYasha. No one had. Sango and Miroku were in the dark. Even thought the two had fought before never had InuYasha disappeared. They did not ask Kagome about it, they figured she would tell them in her own time. All day Kagome moped around the hut and finally told Sango that she was going home. She tried to explain her reasoning, but in her heart she felt she was wrong in some sense. The day faded quickly and Kagome decided it was time to go. Her first day as a senior was tomorrow. She walked to the well alone and took a look around scanning for any sign of InuYasha before jumping into the well.
“Goodbye Kagome.” InuYasha whispered. He had been hiding in the trees. Again he took off on his own. With his heart aching like it never had before he strolled through the forest. He cursed Kagome for leaving. He cursed his human side for letting him fall in love. He cursed the day they met.
