InuYasha led the way down the path as the group had turned to head back north. It had been barely over a month since they had left Kiade's village. The group had traveled to the southern shore line and now had to turn back after running out of land to search. InuYasha was getting anxious knowing tonight was the night of the new moon. He didn't want the new demon girl to know his secret.
The sun slowly began to set in the sky as Miroku and Sango began settling down for the night. InuYasha had decided he would spend the night away from everyone in an attempt to hide his human form from the demon girl. But just as he was about to slip off he noticed she was no where to be found.
“Hey Miroku, where is Akira?” He barked.
“I don't know.” Miroku said scanning for her with his eyes.
“She was here just a minute ago.” Sango added.
“Damn her.” InuYasha said as he tried sniffing the air for her scent. Barely he caught her scent from inside the forest his sense of smell was fading fast. “I think I have picked up her scent. Stay here I'll bring her back.”
InuYasha darted off in the direction of her scent, but before he could get to her it happened. Darkness had crept over the land and his demon powers had faded with the light of the sun. `I have no choice now. She will see my human form.' He growled to himself as he continued walking.
Soon he came upon her sitting with her back to him. As he approached she heard his footsteps and quickly rose to her feet drawing her sword. “It's just me.” He called out walking closer to her.
“Stay away from me!” she hissed at him not recognizing him at first.
“It's me, InuYasha.” He said, but as he got closer he noticed there was something different about her. She too had changed with the new moon.
“Akira…” he said softly.
Her claws were gone along with her fangs. Her black hair with the bold dark streaks of red was now just black and her deep blue eyes were now brown. She stared at him with tears in her eyes.
“You are a half demon like I am.” InuYasha said in amazement. “You too loose your powers when there is no moon.”
Akira stepped toward InuYasha and embraced him. She buried her head into his chest as she cried. After a moment of shock InuYasha embraced her back. Akira looked up to him, large tears still falling from the corners of her eyes, “A half demon.”
InuYasha stood looking down at her. `She doesn't even know what she is.' He thought to himself. But before he could begin to explain his human body began to react to a beautiful girl holding him. Even though he no longer had his demon sense of smell, he could still smell her sweet fragrance. He began to blush as his body began to encourage him to kiss the girl who was pressing against him.
InuYasha had been attracted to her, but his demon side was able to keep it hidden, now his mind was being overpowered by hormones and physical urges he leaned down and pressed his lips to hers. He gently parted his lips sliding his tongue against the crease of her lips asking for entry. Her full lips parted and she used her tongue to meet his as they explored.
After a few moments of bliss Akira pulled away. “We can't do this.” InuYasha grabbed her hand as she pulled away from him. She stared back at his brown eyes. He pulled her back to him and embraced her once again.
The two stood in their embrace longing to be closer to one another. She rested her chin on his shoulder and whispered into his ear, “What if I told you that I don't want to find my sister. What if I told you that everyday I have spent with you has been a blessing and a curse for me...”
“I know.” InuYasha whispered back to her.
The two sat down embracing each other and fell asleep in each others arms. When dawn came the next morning they awoke to uncomfortable glares from Sango and Miroku who had been searching for them. They quickly pulled themselves away from each other and InuYasha hastily stood up.
“Let's go.” He said walking away from the others towards the path northward.
Sango and Miroku's eyes then fell upon Akira who was left standing. A light shade of pink flushed her cheeks and she dropped her eyes to the ground. Sango and Miroku slowly walked by her following InuYasha. Akira trailed behind them.
Day dreaming of the kiss the night before Akira stayed a few yards behind everyone. InuYasha's thoughts returned to her words the night before. Guilt overcame him as he wondered how upset Kagome would be if she knew. And she would know, Sango and Miroku would tell her.
“I never thought of InuYasha as a lecher.” Sango spoke softly.
“Ah my dear Sango we don't know what happened last night between those two.” Miroku said trying to defend InuYasha.
Sango's eyes narrow as she glared at the monk. “They apparently didn't want us to know otherwise they would have slept in the camp with us.” Her expressions soften, “What about Kagome?”
“I think InuYasha feels Kagome has deserted him. Perhaps last night in his human form, it was his way of dealing with it.” Miroku replied, his hand holding his chin as he was deep in thought.
InuYasha heard the mumbling coming from behind him. He shifted his ears to try and hear what was being said to no avail. But he had a pretty good idea what the conversation was about. The very same thing he was worrying about, Kagome.
Later that evening the group had traveled as far as daylight would allow them. Miroku and InuYasha sat by a small campfire with only the sound of fire between them. Akira and Sango had retreated to a hot spring a few yards away beside a stream. InuYasha was annoyed by the silence between them. “Miroku nothing happened between us.”
“Oh,” Miroku replied with a huge grin on his face. “It's not my business if it had.”
InuYasha bared his fangs, “Keh, I am saying it so you'll know.”
In the hot spring the two girls relaxed. Akira wanted to speak, but was afraid of her new found friends opinion of her after last night. Sango sat silently looking down into the water. Her thoughts were not about those two, but her lost brother Kohaku.
“Sango is something bothering you?” Akira asked sensing her distress.
“I was just thinking about Kohaku, my younger brother. I wonder if he is okay.” She replied never breaking her gaze.
“You worry about him a lot don't you?” Akira asked.
“Yes. He's all the family I have left.” Sango explained. “Naraku possessed him using one of the jewel shards and now uses him to do his bidding.”
“I am sure you will get him back.” Akira said trying to give her hope. “You and your friends are very strong.”
“I am sure your sister is worried about you too.” Sango said raising her eyes to look at Akira.
“I'm not so sure about that.” She replied. “She's probably here to take me back to the tiger clan.”
“The tiger clan?” Sango questioned.
“Yes, I was to marry the young prince of the tiger clan to uphold a treaty between our clan and theirs.” Akira explained.
“And you didn't want to?” Sango questioned. Akira nodded. “Why?”
“I was very young when my mother was killed. My father and mother had been away for many days and my father returned alone. They were only supposed to be away for a ride through the country side. When I asked my father where my mother was he said she had taken a long journey to a better place, to heaven.” Akira's eyes began to tear. “Several nights later I snuck into the thrown room and heard my father and older sister arguing. My sister was demanding my father go to war on the tiger clan, that they were responsible for her death. But my father argued that even he could not see or sense anything about the attack.” Akira fell silent as she still struggled to hold back her tears.
“Has anyone ever told you exactly what happened?” Sango asked.
“I have heard rumors. My father could not talk about it. From what I have gathered over the years, while they were riding four hooded figures came from the shadows of the surrounding forest pulling my mother from her horse. They took her into the woods, kicking and screaming, and she was never seen again. My father pursued them for many days, but could not find them. It was said they had no scent to track, and barely left any traces through the forest. My mothers' body was never found. Rumors of her death spread like wild fire through our kingdom. But the only one's that could have been responsible were the tiger clan. It is said their ruler was in love with my mother, but her heart belonged to my father.” She fell silent for a few moments staring into the water of the hot spring. “I'd die before joining their clan.”
