Chapter 1:
I have to get what?!
**************************************************************** ********
At one point in time, the great kingdoms of the East, West, North, and South were all at war against each other. Fifty years of senseless fighting brought fifty years of famine, bloodshed, and misery and woe. All the kingdoms finally came to their senses and ended the never-ending war. The four kingdoms entered an era of peace and tranquility. Two years later in the North, the royal Higurashi family rejoiced in the birth of the twin infant princesses, Kikyou and Kagome. Seventeen years later, the twin princesses were trained to be mikos by their mother. Both of them beautified over the years. Kikyou, the oldest, had midnight black hair that reached to her thigh, brilliant brown eyes, and beautiful pale skin. Kagome, on the other hand, had wavy midnight black hair that reached to her waist. Unlike her sister, Kagome had slightly tan skin but like her sister, she also had brilliant brown eyes.
On a crisp morning, Kagome was walking through the winding, old, wore downed cobblestone path with pink, fragrant, Sakura trees winding along the path inside her palace. She wore her favorite kimono that was a bright pink and a radiant red, decorated with pink, Sakura blossoms prints on the sleeves. Her tumbled down her back in waves of ebony and blew slightly in the warm, mid-summer breeze. Though the setting around her was peaceful and tranquil, her mind was anything but that. She was still playing back the events of last night.
(Flashback)
It was a stormy, summer night and rained as if there was now tomorrow. The palace was quiet and still except for the palace guards. Inside the palace, everyone was asleep except for Kagome who could not sleep with all the thunder but still found it relaxing. All of the sudden, she heard a thunderous boom, an earsplitting creak, and many footsteps running through puddles of clear rainwater. “A demon.” Kagome thought. She quickly sat up and ran towards her bow and quiver, opened her shoji door and ran down the enormous halls to Kikyou’s bedroom. When she got there, Kikyou was already closing her door. “Kagome let’s go.” Kikyou said. Kagome nodded her head and both of them ran outside. When they got there, their mother and father were right there with the guards surrounding the night visitors. “What is going on father?” Kikyou asked. “Well, let’s find out.” he answered. “Guards, at ease!” he commanded. They immediately did what they were told. “Who are you and what is your purpose?” One of the mysterious people walked up and said, “Forgive me your majesty, we mean no harm.” The man bowed and so did the others in his group. “My name is Satoro; I’m the chief of the demon slayer village. We have come in search of your eldest daughter, princess Kikyou.” Kagome looked at Kikyou, who at the time looked confused. “What do you want with my daughters?” Kagome and Kikyou’s mother asked. “We need the spiritual powers of princess Kikyou to purify this.” Satoro said as he took out an object from under his sea green shoulder pad. In his callused hands was a small, spherical, glass like jewel. It was a soft, pink like almost purple color but what got Kagome and Kikyou’s attention was that it had an unbelievably, strong malevolent aura that black light hone around it. “It is known as the jewel of four souls,” Satoro started, “It has the power to grant one’s most desired wish or increase power hundred-fold.” The other slayers got on their knees and bowed as Satoro walked up to Kikyou and handed her the jewel. “We trust that you’ll purify and protect it” Kikyou looked at the jewel, which was glowing its malevolent glow and then looked back at Satoro. She nodded, “I’ll do it.” Satoro smiled and offered is best wishes. With that, he and the demon slayers left the palace, leaving Kikyou and the royal family with the jewel of four souls.
(End of Flashback)
By the time of her recolations of last night ended, Kagome had already made to her favorite spot in the entire palace. She sat down on a stone bench on top of a grassy gren hill, which overlooked the palace grounds and the full-bloomed Sakura trees. It overlooked the palace walls, which from where she was sitting did not hide the bustling village below. A breathtaking sight. She thought about Kikyou and how she is always second best and basicly living under the shadow of her sister Kikyou. “Sometimes I envy her.” Kagome said softly. “Wait! I should not envy my older sister! I should be proud of her!” She eclaimed. “What is all the commotion?” Kagome turned around and saw her mother, Empress Akira standing behind her. She had radient, brown eyes and long, silky brown hair. She wore and elegant silk kimono that was light lavender and a beautiful shade of azure blue and a golden yellow. “Nothing’s wrong mother.” Kagome said in a downcast voice. “Kagome please, I know when my own daughter is unhappy. What ails you Kagome?” Akira asked. Kagome sighed, “Mother, why am I always second best than Kikyou? I am always considered as a subordinate to Kikyou. I just want to know why people won’t give me a chance to prove myself that I am as equally powerful as Kikyou.” “What are you talking about! You and Kikyou are equally powerful. Do you remember when you and Kikyou were battling that wave of demons that attacked the village in the mountains?” Akira asked. Kagome nodded. “Remember when she got injured badly and you annihilated all the demons with one blast of your energy?” She nodded again. “Kagome, Kikyou is the first one in line for the throne. We are testing her ability to rule and ability to uphold obligations and responseibilites.” Akira said. “Well, tha answered my questions. I’m going inside to get a bath.” Kagome stated as she stood up. “ Wait Kagome,” Akira started, “ I have to tell you something.” “What is it?”
“Do you really want to prove yourself?”
“ Yes mother!” Kagome said eagerly.
“ You truly want to?” Akira asked.
“ Yes more than anything!” Kagome exclaimed.
“ Good because you’re getting married to the prince of the South!” Akira said, hoping that her daughter did not hear the last part.
“ Thank you! I…WHAT!?” Kagome yelled. Birds flew away from the branches of the trees and ran for cover.
“ What do you mean I’m getting married?” Kagome demanded.
“ Well, your father wanted you to get an arranged marriage with prince Kouga. It’s more of an issue that you should take up to your father.” Akira explained.
Kagome ran down the hill and started down the cobblestone path back into the palace.
“ Wait Kagome!” she yelled to her daughter but was no use.
“ Huh, marriage! What’s up your sleeve this time father?” Kagome thought as she continued to near the palace.
