The Child

When the light has finally faded with the sun, the darkness rules the night; and since Kanna was who she was, everyone hid from sight. Doors were barricaded, windows sealed shut, and no one made a sound. Very few slept, mainly the men, and the children were kept close to each other and made sure not to wander alone. At this very moment, they all know, The Child is coming, she always comes when the sun is down; but, still, no one can seem to catch her.

“Heh, they still believe they can hide from me…” her childlike voice rung out,” well, they can hide all they want, but they cannot escape me.”

With that, she leaped off of her perch on top of her cave, landing swiftly on her feet. Holding the mirror directly in front of herself, she listened to the voices of the village.

”SHE'S COMING! WE MUST HIDE THE CHILDREN!” was one woman's harsh whisper.
”No! They must stay with us, she will find them if they hide.”
“But then she'll kill us!”

As she watched, her mouth turned bitter at the site of them. “Foolish humans save the children or save your-selves. It is a difficult choice I imagine, but no one will escape…no one.”

Slowly, she began her quiet walk to the village, while the villagers them-selves were completely unaware.

“They had slacked off, it seems, usually they all have already hidden by now. Heh, it seems they do not care for the offspring as much as they once did….maybe they have finally given up.”

Closer and closer she came, louder and louder were they're huddled voices, and every step she took, her mirror yearned for a soul. Yes, tonight, not one child would escape.

One child had been set out in the woods before the sunset, but unfortunately, didn't return in time, only now, did his mother realize this.
“Toru…TORU! WHERE'S MY TORU!?” she screamed.
“ Shhhh! Hush Durei! She will come sooner if you do not silence yourself!”
”MY BOY!” the young woman cried,” WHERE ARE YOU!” She ran into the forest to find her lost child.

Along the same path as Kanna, the boy searched frantically for the village path. He heard a twig snap behind him and his heart beat sped up.

”Wh-who's there?” Trying to sound strong, he didn't dare look behind him, but only kept his eyes focused on the ground.

In a soft voice, Kanna tenderly spoke to him, “Why child, are you lost?”

”Y-yes, I am…” a cold sweat began to drip off of his face.

“Please, I will do nothing to you, please turn around, take my hand.”
That voice, how could he have turned down that voice. It was, so pure and real, it was calming, almost as if he was under a spell, he turned around.
He saw before him, nothing of a demon, no devil creature with blaring red eyes, but what seemed to him as an angel.

“There, I am nothing to be afraid of, come now, trust me..” Kanna said as she outstretched her hand to him.
He took the hand without saying a word, and felt his own feet disobey his mind. He knew this was bad, he could feel it, none of the movements his body was making was of his own will, tonight would surely be the last night of his life.
