This Can't Be Real

Chapter 2

Deep Meaning

Kagome's neck was stiff and her throat was sore. She knew that she was lying in an uncomfortable position, but yet she didn't want to open her eyes. She heard tiny noises and suddenly she realized that she wasn't with Inuyasha, or Shippo. Her eyes flew open as she sprang forward, only to have her head come in contact with something hard. She fell back and put a hand on the bump forming.

"Dammit." She whispered as she rubbed the reddening spot.

Her eyes focused and she got a look at her surroundings. They weren't what she wanted to wake up to. It was a dark and musty room, not something that she would ever consider home. She was lying on what seemed to be a table with one directly over it. `Shelves.' She thought immediately.

"You're awake, I'm glad." Said an irritated voice.

She looked over to a chair and a woman that she had failed to notice on her awakening. Kagura sat there playing with her fan-flicking it open and closed. She didn't look very happy to be sitting there, waiting for her to awake.

"What? Where am I?" She asked trying to remember what happened.

"Stupid girl, do you not remember anything from the previous night?" She asked standing up and tucking away her fan.

Kagome closed her eyes and slowly she recollected the memory that had failed to surprise her when she opened her eyes. She put a hand over her gasp, as she now knew where she was. She slid out from where she was lying and stood up to her full height.

"What do you want with me!" She asked fearfully.

"Me? Nothing, Naraku on the other hand, he's got some plans for you." She said smirking at him.

"What kind of plans?"

"Don't want to ruin the surprise for you. Let's just say that you won't be the same Kagome that you once knew."

She laughed at Kagome before grabbing her arm roughly and dragging her out of the room to another one attached to it. It was much larger and at the opposite side a man with his back towards her sat. His long hair cascaded down his back and onto the floor around him. Kagome wasn't fooled without his costume on-Naraku couldn't hide from her.

.

"Slow down! Inuyasha we need to rest! We've been going almost all morning, we need a break." Cried Miroku as he jogged behind the leaping hanyou.

"No, we have to find her!" He called back determined.

"Inuyasha we realize it, but we can't fight Naraku if we're dead tired! She won't be going anywhere." Sango said stopping her jog abruptly.

Miroku and Kirara followed suit, watching the hanyou finally stop and turn around to them.

"FINE! HAVE IT YOUR WAY!" He yelled at them as he jumped up into a nearby tree overlooking the part of the forest they had yet to cover.

He mumbled to himself about weak humans and their rest as he crossed his arms over his chest in aggravation. He knew that his anger and irritation would soon fade and would be replaced by sadness and denial. His heart tightened fiercely as he thought about how he had let Kagome slip from his grasp, let Naraku take her. He tried to tell himself that there was nothing he could do, but there probably was.

"Stupid, stupid IDIOT!" He said through clenched teeth as he grabbed a nearby branch and squeezed it until the wood splintered and broke.

`How did I let it happen? Why couldn't I save her? I told her that I would protect her no matter what happens, and I fucking failed her!' He thought as he tightened his hands into fists.

From below, the two humans watched as their friend sulked up in the tree. A part of Miroku felt sorry for the man, seeing as he had been the one who had found him after Kagura and her minions had fled.

[]Flashback[]

In a flash of light, and a rush of violent wind they were all gone. Every single one of them. He looked into the distance to see a white dot turn smaller and smaller by the second. He turned away to Sango and Kirara, to see if they were all right. She had dropped down next to her companion, who had gone back to the tiny cat form. She was bleeding from her side and he could hear Sango's concern in her breaths.

"Sango, are you alright?" He asked putting a hand on her shoulder as he kneeled down to her level.

She looked at his hand on her shoulder, then to his face.

"Yeah, fine. Go find Kagome and Inuyasha, I'll be fine right here." She said placing a hand on his.

He looked down at the contact and then back to her face. She had a soft smile on her slightly flushed face-and it was meant for him. He returned it before getting up and letting the contact he had established go.

Without looking back he rushed towards the area where Kagome had disappeared. He ran faster when he couldn't hear anything-afraid that something horrible had happened. He searched the woods frantically, seeing neither of the two. Then an orange ball of fur attacked him from some nearby bushes.

"MIROKU!" Shippo cried as he pushed his face in front of his. "KAGOME! INUYASHA! NARAKU!"

"Shippo calm down! Where are they?" He said in a concerned tone.

"Over-over there." He said pointing to the left of him.

Miroku nodded and looked over at the place.

"Go back and help Sango with Kirara." He said letting Shippo jump out of his arms and run the way he had just come from.

He wasted no time rushing over to the spot where Shippo had pointed, but surprisingly found nothing except for Kagome's bow and arrows. He bent down and picked them up, knowing that Kagome would never leave behind her weapon. Something was definitely wrong with this picture-he could sense it.

He headed in the one direction that seemed to be recently used. He sped up when he saw a faint red figure on the ground. He knew that it was Inuyasha, and he couldn't be sure if he was hurt or not. His feet sped up, not listening to his aching muscles. As he neared he noticed that Inuyasha wasn't on the ground, but holding himself steady above it. He slowed down as he came to the area where he stood.

Soon he found himself approaching Inuyasha slowly, knowing exactly what had happened. Naraku had taken Kagome, and Inuyasha wasn't there in time to catch him. Before he could speak Inuyasha started to whisper just barely loud enough for the monk to hear.

"He took her…he took her away from me…and I couldn't do anything to stop him. He won…and now I've lost her…just like before…"

Miroku slowly bent down near Inuyasha's side and placed Kagome's things to his right, away from the grieving hanyou. Deciding that he could offer some comfort, he placed his hand on his friend's back.

"Inuyasha…"

Suddenly Inuyasha turned his head to Miroku with a rage that was all too new to him.

"That fucking bastard took her from me!" He sat up and flexed his claws. "I'm going to rip his head off and make him suffer until he feels the pain that I've felt!"

He started to growl dangerously and his eyes started to flicker red.

"Inuyasha, Tetsusaiga!" He said slowly reaching for Kagome's things.

"He's not going to live another day of feeling life his way anymore! I will make sure I let him taste hell before sending him down!" He growled as the intensity of the red started to fleck his golden eyes.

Miroku started to panic and grabbed Kagome's bow and shoved it towards Inuyasha. He stared at the bow and arrows with a confused, yet angry look.

"They're Kagome's. I found them back there." He said quietly as Inuyasha took them in his hands.

His face fell and he ran his finger over the bow as he thought of Kagome. The anger dissipated and his eyes turned back to the hurt and broken eyes that he had expected to see. Miroku knew that he should just leave him alone and stood up silently.

"If only she hadn't left like we told her to. If only I'd let her stay and fight…she might've had a chance." He whispered before closing his eyes and holding the bow close to his chest.

Miroku took this as his sign to leave and left the hanyou to have time to himself-it wasn't easy loosing someone who you care deeply about. He glanced back and felt a little sympathy for the guy.

[] End of Flashback[]

Miroku looked over at Sango who seemed to be pretty down. She sighed as she stroked her fire cat's fur. He could tell that she was also upset about Kagome being taken away, and he knew that she had given the command not to fight. He wasn't sure how to approach the situation-he wasn't that great at comforting people in a situation like this one. Then he decided to just let his senses guide him.

He got up and sat down next to Sango, closely. Her head snapped up and he knew exactly what was going through her head. He held his hands up defensively and put a n innocent look on his face.

"That's not why I came over here, I swear!" He said putting his hands down in his lap. "I've come to discuss a very depressed hanyou."

"Oh." She said quietly.

"When I found him last night, he was…well not himself."

"What do you mean?"

"He was upset and was muttering to himself. He said that it was his fault and that he should've not sent her away." He took a deep breath and brought a thinking face. "But what really I think that confuses me the most, is when he said `he took her from me'. I mean I know that she's a friend of his and he would protect her no matter what, but could it mean more?"

"I'm not sure, but he is usually confused with his emotions. There is still Kikyou…and I don't even think that he is sure what he feels. Maybe it's just friend to friend ties."

"Or maybe it's love."

She looked at him with wide eyes, but yet saw the meaning behind his words. She looked up into the distance where she knew that they would be heading off to in only moment's time, and then her eyes flickered to the hanyou in the tree. She couldn't help but feel a twang of guilt knowing that she gave the command to send her away, and she caused him to be like this.

Back above ground in the tree Inuyasha let his eyes close and his thoughts wander. He hadn't caught Miroku or Sango's conversation, but seemed to be too busy in his own world. `She's gone because of me. I'm stupid, so so SO STUPID! She can't be hurt…I just won't let her. Naraku, if he did anything to hurt her, I will send him down to hell faster than you can say sit!'

"Kagome, where are you?" He whispered into the wind. "Where did he take you?"

.

She soon found her wrists being bound tightly together from the ceiling. She felt partially like a punching bag, although he hadn't abused her as of yet. He had told Kagura to leave for now and prepare Kagome's room for when his plan was complete. Her mind was buzzing with possibilities of what he might be talking about, but she didn't want to believe any of them.

"Kagome…such a weak individual…but such a pretty face." Naraku cackled from behind her.

His finger's traced around her waist, making her shudder at the contact.

"Get your filthy hands off of me." She whispered in a deathly tone at him.

He pulled away immediately, but still had the smile on his face.

"What are you going to do with me?" She asked as he came into view.

"You'll soon see Kagome, but you won't be the same Kagome that you know now."

He walked over to a table that Kagome had noticed looked unusual suspicious. A black silk cloth lay across it, leaving bumps from the objects under it. Kagome kept her eyes trained on it as he swept a hand over to the edge of it and pulled it back. On the table, a dagger, a bowl filled with dark red liquid and a scroll lay there.

"KAGURA!" He barked as he looked back at her. "IT'S TIME!"

She appeared out of the room with a similar smirk on her face. She nodded and pulled out her fan. Kagome closed her eyes, not wanting to see anything that they were doing.

"Don't want to witness the fun? Too bad." He said motioning to Kagura to begin.

Suddenly the air around Kagome started to turn into violent wind, and she could feel it cutting her. She bit back her scream and waited till it was over. The wind didn't die down, but the pain stopped. She could feel blood trickling down her body from the wounds, but she tried not to notice them.

She suddenly felt a cold blade pierce her sides, shedding blood-lots of it. She could hold it back anymore. She screamed. It seemed to be drowned by the fierce wind whipping around her, but she still screamed. Naraku dropped the blade on the ground around her feet and then reached towards the bowl that held dark red liquid.

He took no time in reaching Kagome and pouring down her throat as she screamed. He shut her mouth closed and forced her to swallow. She gagged and fought, but she could get a release on her mouth. Then to his delight she swallowed and the red liquid began to work quickly on her. He stuck a hand out and the scroll flew to his hand. It had writings on it that seemed difficult to read.

Then he started to chant them. Kagome had never heard such words in her life, and she was beginning to get scared. Her insides burned and it felt like her gut had been scraped clean with acid. She couldn't scream anymore-her throat was thrashed and swollen. Her eyes flashed open and suddenly the roof was gone. Up in the sky of early morning, it was only black filled with flickers of lightning. They started to get closer and Kagome knew that it wasn't just a coincidence.

Then when Kagome thought that he wouldn't cause her any more pain, she was proved wrong. A bolt of lightning shot down and attacked her body. She felt like she was on fire and her blood was boiling. She didn't feel so good anymore and her reality was falling apart before her very eyes. Her whole body felt scarred and she couldn't stop the darkness from taking over. She slumped forward against the ropes and hung there until Naraku cut her down.

"Kagura, take her back to her room. Tonight she should be ready." He said walking away from the scene.

"Yes master." She said quietly as she lifted Kagome up as if a feather.

Her room had transformed into somehow darker with only a small pillow and a blanket. Kagura dropped her on the poor excuse for a bed and left her alone like instructed. She prayed that he would see what a mistake he had just created, that would be the downfall of them both.
