InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Thoughtful Misconceptions ❯ The Letter ( Chapter 15 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

Author's Note: I wanted to update right away because I wasn't entirely pleased with the way the last chapter turned out because it was more a filler chapter. This chapter is much closer to actual climax of the story. Please enjoy……..

The Letter

“5 . . .4 . . . 3 . . . 2 . . . 1. Happy New Year.”

Kagura laughed as Sesshoumaru leaned forward and kissed her quickly as the New Year began. She heard a low growl and saw Inuyasha eyeing her. She shook her head and he turned back to talking to Kagome.

“I think this is a good start, don't you think?” Sesshoumaru almost purred into her ear as he wrapped his arms around her.

A good start was an understatement. Her and Sesshoumaru have developed a relationship that she had been lacking for a long time. To appease Inuyasha, however, she invited much of the cast.

Yes, they owned their own apartment now. Both of their mom's weren't too thrilled with the idea of them leaving home but it grew on them. Now they lived in a simple apartment and both worked at the body shop so things were settling down.

She scooted close to him, relishing in the warmth of his embrace. “Yeah, I think it is.”

“Hey, Wench, if you're done plastering yourself on disgusting men then get over here so I can say `Happy New Year' to you.” Came loudly across the room.

She smiled, “I should go over there.”

Sesshoumaru sighed, “You know, I said I'd let the inheritance thing go.”

Kagura bit back on laughter, “Well now, it's more that he just doesn't like you.”

Sesshoumaru rolled his eyes, “I don't like him either but at least I have the mental capacity to be civil.”

This time Kagura did laugh, “I know but that's just how Inuyasha is.”

“Wench!”

Kagura kissed him quickly, “I'll be back in a minute.”

Sesshoumaru rolled his eyes again, “I'll just go talk to Miroku.”

“Wench!”

“Inuyasha, shut the hell up.” She yelled back as she made her way to him. “You have no patience whatsoever.”

He laughed, wrapping his arms around her in a tight hug. “Shut up, wench.” He kissed her forehead soundly, “Happy New Year, Kagura.”

She smiled up at him warmly, “Happy New Year to you, too.” She surveyed the crowd of people milling about their small apartment, “ You know this is going to be hell cleaning all of this up.”

Inuyasha let out a bark of laughter, “This party was your idea, wench.”

Kagura laughed, mocking Inuyasha's own exclamation, “Like hell you're going to get out cleaning. You know I can kick your ass.”

Inuyasha just grinned at her, “All right, all right, you win. I promise I'll help.”

Kagura grinned, tapping his nose. “Good.”

Inuyasha watched as she made her way back to Sesshoumaru, “As little as possible.” He muttered under his breath.

“See you tomorrow, Kagome.” Kagura yelled as Kagome slipped her coat on.

Kagome smiled warmly, “Yep, can you believe we only have one week left?”

Kagura groaned, “Sh, I don't even want to think about it right now.”

Kagome giggled and kissed Inuyasha on the cheek. “See you, hon.” He smiled like Kagura hardly ever got to see him smile and Kagome gave a little wave as she shut the door.

“Oh, and you better help Kagura clean up the rest of this mess.” Kagome said, quickly opening the door and shutting it again.

Inuyasha groaned and Kagura started laughing. “You heard the girl. Now be a good bitch and get the vacuum cleaner for me.”

He grumbled as he made his way to the closet and Kagura assumed it'd probably be better if she didn't know what he was saying.

After two hours of vacuuming and dish washing, Inuyasha and Kagura crashed onto their couch. Kagura rubbing her own feet and Inuyasha digging in the cushions for his lost remote.

“Where the hell?” He said muffled, digging behind the couch, “I bet that bastard sto…”

Kagura sighed, “Inuyasha, Sesshoumaru did not steal your remote. Will you get off it?”

“Kagura, I can't help it if you're dating a bastard.”

Kagura just shook her head leaving the argument where it was.

“Aha!” Inuyasha proclaimed, whipping out his missing remote from underneath the armchair.

“I told you he didn't steal your remote.”

Inuyasha looked at Kagura like she was an idiot. “Kagura, he's still a bastard.” He told her in a voice that one would use as if addressing a small child.

“Inuyasha, shut up.”

“You know you say that a lot. You think it's because you lack in comebacks that are over two syllables.” Inuyasha said smartly, sitting back and propping his feet up.

“Or maybe it's because I assume you can't handle anything more complicated than shut up so I try to dumb it down for you. However, it seems you don't even really understand the concept of shut up.” Kagura retorted.

Inuyasha grunted in answer, his attention more focused on finding something interesting on the TV. Kagura shook her head, grabbing a blanket off the back of the couch. “I'm gonna crash.”

Inuyasha nodded, “Night, babe.”

She leaned back the armchair and stretched out. “Night.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~

Kagura woke with a start, not having her bearings, she almost fell out the chair she had been sleeping in. Wiping her eyes, she made out the clock on the stove that read that it was twelve thirty already. Meaning Inuyasha had already gone to work and she had the shower and bathroom and the refrigerator to herself. The New Year was starting out in a fine way.

“First munchies then shower.” She mumbled to herself, rising to visit the said refrigerator. Halfway to the kitchen a knock at the door interrupted her journey to food enlightenment.

“Who could that be and what did they forget?” She asked, once again talking to herself. Company was not exactly welcome at the moment because a Kagura without food was a Kagura without a good temper.

She opened the door expecting a sheepish guest admitting that they had forgotten something important. Instead all that stood in front of her was an empty hallway. She looked left and right not seeing anyone.

As Kagura was shutting the door, she noticed a small white envelope lying on the ground addressed to her.

She recognized the writing immediately and debated for about 10 seconds on whether or not she just wanted to throw it away.

Curiosity got the best of her.

Dear Kagura,
I know you didn't answer my first letter and ignored my last two attempts to talk to you but I feel like I can't give up. I wish to speak to you, to have you at least hear why I did what I did. I know it wasn't right and I'm not asking you to forgive me or understand but just to listen. If you're willing to give me a chance, I'll be at the Main St. Café tomorrow at noon and I hope that you will meet me there.
Sincerely,
Mika

Kagura just stared at it, her hand shaking and her eyes burning. She didn't know what to do, to think. All she really wanted to do was to scream in aggravation at the injustice of everything.

She was just starting to feel like things were getting on track and once again, someone has to come back and screw that up for her.

The phone rang bringing her out of her reverie. She dropped the letter and ran to answer it, her mind still on the letter. “Hello.”

“Hello, beautiful.”

She allowed herself a small smile, “Hi, Sesshoumaru.”

“So how is your new year treating you?” He was speaking low, like he was trying to whisper.

“Shitty. Where are you that you have to whisper?” She asked somewhat suspiciously.

“I'm visiting my family and they're starting to get on my nerves. I don't want them to know I'm hiding in my old room.” He answered her, still whispering.

Kagura bit back on her laughter, “Sesshoumaru, that's horrible. You should cherish your family.”

Sesshoumaru sounded offended. “I do cherish them. I just don't always like being around them.”

This time Kagura did let out a small laugh. “Oh, Sesshoumaru, I need to see you.” She spit it out all of a sudden. Inwardly cursing for letting that slip, she tried to make excuses, “I mean, it's kind of creepy here being alone because Inuyasha went into work and I heard a noise so I think I need to get out of the house.”

Sesshoumaru sighed, “Kagura, I'm not stupid. What's wrong?” She could almost see his little smile, “I wouldn't guess you as one to be afraid of the dark.”

She took a deep breath, organizing her thoughts, “Remember how I said that my real mom was trying to show up and be mommy again.”

“Yes.” He said softly.

“She left me a letter and wants to meet me tomorrow.” She whispered, biting back on tears. She hated to cry.

“Hey, beautiful, get dressed. I'm gonna come pick you up.” Sesshoumaru said gently.

“Ok.” She answered weakly and hung up the phone. For some reason knowing that he was on his way made things seem less bad.

She drew a shaky breath and ran to her bedroom to find something to wear. Finding some jeans and a brown sweater, she dressed quickly and brushed out waist length hair.

A knock at the door sounded and Kagura took one last look at her make-up to make sure her mascara hadn't been smeared too badly and went to answer the door.

She opened it to Sesshoumaru clad in a dark purple sweater and black slacks and a small encouraging smile. She didn't say anything when he reached out and pulled her into his arms. He held her rocking a little and she was silent because for now she didn't have to say a word.

~*~*~*~*~*~

They sat in a small café called The Metal Café and they had the restaurant mostly to themselves. Sesshoumaru had just read the letter and now he just sat back mewling over what he had read. “So what do you want to do?”

“Punch her in the face.” Kagura said in a pouting voice.

“That's assault.”

“Damn it.”

“Do you want to talk to her?” He set his hand on hers, reassuringly.

“No.” She sighed, “A little. A very small, almost miniscule part of me wants to hear what she has to say. However, the much larger part of me still wants to hit her in the face.”

Sesshoumaru let a small smile show through, “Then I think you should.”

“You think I should hit her in the face?” She asked hopefully.

“No.”

“Damn it again.”

“Kagura, if you think you should talk to her then I think you need to.”

“But why should I give her that chance when she never gave me a chance?” Kagura said, stirring cream slowly into her coffee.

“How do you know that when she left you there, she thought she was giving you a chance for something better?” Sesshoumaru said softly.

She frowned, “You think?” Kagura bit her lip, “I've held so much against her. How do I just let that go?”

Sesshoumaru shook his head, “I'm not asking you to let everything go. I'm asking you to do what you think is right. Can you honestly just go on and never know what she has to say?”

“No, I can't. I have to know.” She broke her biscotti in her frustration, “Damn my curiosity. Damn my inability to let things go.”

Sesshoumaru let out a little chuckle, “Come on.”

Kagura curled her lip in slight disgust, “Come on where?” She asked with a little whine.

“Come with to visit my family. I promised I'd come back.” He said, pulling his coat on. “And you're coming with me.”

“Sesshoumaru, I don't want to see anyone right now.” She whined out as he pulled her up and handed her coat to her.

“Come anyway, please, for me?”

Kagura sighed, groaning, “Fine but you owe me.”

Sesshoumaru kissed her cheek, “It'll be fun, I swear.”

“Weren't you just calling me earlier so you could escape them?” She said, following him out the door.

“That was just my excuse to give you a call.” He answered almost smugly.

It occurred to Kagura suddenly as she got in the car and strapped her seat belt. Sesshoumaru had told her that he was never adopted and that both his parents had passed on. She knew he had a cousin but how many relations did he actually know?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Kagura hid her surprise when they pulled up to an orphanage. She inwardly chastised herself for not thinking of something like that. It would make sense that Sesshoumaru thought of the other foster kids as family.

`I really am selfish not to realize how lucky I was to be adopted by somebody like Kohana.' She thought suddenly feeling like a jerk.

She smiled and grabbed Sesshoumaru's hand, “Make sure you introduce me to everybody, ok?”

He smiled back, shaking his head, “I promise to do just that.”

As she opened the door, a rush of kids ran passed her to the front yard, one of them brandishing a football. Sesshoumaru grabbed one as he ran past and spun him.

The red-haired boy smiled widely, “Hey, Sesshoumaru, you wanna play some football?”

Sesshoumaru messed up his hair, “Maybe later, kid. I want you to meet my friend here.”

At that the little boy then noticed Kagura. He grinned once again, “Hi. My name's Shippo.”

She smiled back, shaking his extended hand, “Mine's Kagura.”

“Nice to meet you, Kagura.” He said automatically as Sesshoumaru set him down.

Kagura sighed a little, “Same here, Shippo.” But she didn't think Shippo heard her as he ran off to join in the football game that had started up in the front yard. She turned to see Sesshoumaru watching her, “What?” She asked somewhat consciously.

He leaned forward and kissed her head, “Nothing.” He grabbed her hand, “Come on, I want you to meet Rin.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

A few hours later, Kagura and Sesshoumaru sat in her living room mostly in silence but completely in comfort.

“I'm going to do it.” Kagura stated suddenly.

Sesshoumaru glanced over at her somewhat surprised. “Yeah? What made you decide that?”

Kagura sighed, “I don't know. Just being there with all those kids seeing how happy they were, how content even though they know they deserve better.” She shrugged, “It made me kind of realize that even though I always believed that Mika was the mistaken one, maybe it was me. I've been the ungrateful one. I couldn't ask for a better mom than Kohana. Maybe I should give her some kind of resolution.”

Sesshoumaru nodded thoughtfully, “No one said you had to forgive her or be her daughter but I think it might be best to hear what she has to say.”

Kagura nodded, “Yeah, me too.” She curled up into his arms, “But Sesshoumaru, I'm afraid. I've held everything against her for so long. What if she takes that away from me?”

He stroked her hair, “Then maybe you'll be able to move on in your life as well.”
