Chapter 5
~In the hut~
A hut could be seen in a meadow, near the edge of the lush green trees of the forest. Built sturdy and strong.
Inside, a light could be seen. Sango sat in front of the fire, cooking everyone's dinner, after a long day of training with her twin girls, Suiseiseki and Mizumi. Their fighting combat skills had started getting better, or maybe Sango was finally losing her touch.
Suiseiseki, the elder one by three minutes, had her mothers brown hair, gentle smile… as well as attitude, but her father's blue eyes.
Mizumi, the younger one, had black hair and also had blue eyes; she was calmer and a little less violent compared to her sister. Miroku's gentle spirit lived within both children, but the younger one showed it more.
Now that they were eight years old, they had decided to start training them… on a low level of course, not wishing to hurt them too much or hard. They have not been blessed with weapons yet, thank god, was Miroku's thought during their taijiya training.
They were obedient… most of the time
Right now, Suiseiseki was playing a small quiet game with Shippo, and Mizumi had fallen asleep in her father's arms. Miroku had always liked it when they were actually good, means les problems for him.
Miroku stood up and set her into her room. To come out a minute later and stand behind his wife, gently kissing her on the cheek.
And out of bad habit, she smacked him… hard. Leaving a red handprint on his face. Quickly apologizing for the habit, and kissing the abused area.
Over in the corner, Inuyasha sat. Silent and seemingly asleep. His ears up and alert for any danger. The sounds around him inside the compact home were typical. He was more worried about outside. Propped up on his usual; position, sitting Indian style and his arms crossed his chest with Tetsusaiga, laying on his shoulder, all he did was listen and keep his senses open.
“Shippo, come along. Dinner is ready.” Sango said quietly, knowing that one of her daughters were asleep. She normally didn't eat very much and she did not that long ago. So she had no worry.
Sango filled a bowl and passed it around, giving it to Shippo who passed it to Miroku, who looked over at Inuyasha, and passed it over once he looked up and met his gaze.
Inuyasha looked down at the bowl with disgust… Sango can't cook to save her life. He preferred Kagome's cooking any day. Damn how he missed her.
The occasional breeze that slipped through the reed mat door, brought in a scent that gave him a shocking look. He looked over to the door, set the bowl down and sprinted out side.
Sano and Miroku watched him go, “What do you think got into him?” Sango asked.
“He probably ran from your cooking.” He joked. But when it came to her cooking, she took it seriously. So this innocent `joke' gave him a black eye.
Sango got up and started after the inu hanyou. Shippo followed after as well as Kilala and Miroku.
Inuyasha had just ran outside and stopped a few feet from the hut and just stared into the darkness of the forest in front of them.
Sango had her Hiraikotsu in hand. Kilala just ran past her.
“Kilala, come back here!” Sango yelled after the small nekomatta. Wondering why the kitten was leaving.
Inuyasha knew exactly who it was though.
“Kagome.” Inuyasha breathed.
Sango looked over in astonishment, “Wha… what?”
~Across the field~
She treaded through the path that she had followed so many times when she was younger. And even though the path was barely there now, and it may have been years, but Kagome remembered it as though it were just yesterday.
Memories started returning to her, as she moved forward. She felt light and care free. A smile plastered on her features, wondering how everyone will react when they see her again.
But then again… her thoughts traveled back to Kilala… she still had questions… but figured that she'd trust her and allow the threads of fate wound and tangle as they were meant to on their own. But the thing that scared her was… what happened where the threads met?
She pushed that thought aside, just as she always did through these past couple years and looked forward.
On her shoulder, she carried her bow and quiver that she had gotten from Kaede's hut before entering the forest that bore `his' name.
It may have been a while, but she wasn't stupid and has not forgotten the dangers in this time.
The sun was quickly disappearing behind the mountains, spilling colors of red and gold into the sapphire sky. And the thought of seeing Sango, Miroku, and Shippo… and Inuyasha, gave her legs the burst of energy that made her start into a run.
She ran a good distance, being grateful that her metabolism has not left her yet. And thankful that she stayed in shape.
Eventually, she came to the clearing the young girl had told her about. Yeah, she saw the hut, and someone was definitely awake, seeing the light still lit, and smoke coming from what Kagome knew was a controlled fire inside.
`This must be it.' She thought to herself as she slowed down and then stopped. Setting a hand against the near tree, and setting the other on her knee, Kagome bent over and tried her best to catch her breath
She looked up at the hut, and heard a smacking sound, and she smirked, `I guess some things never change, huh?' Knowing perfectly well where and why the sound was made.
But the next thing she saw, mad e her breath get caught in her throat. One by one, they came out. Inuyasha, Sango, Shippo, and then Miroku. And even from her distance, she could see the red mark on the monks face She looked at Shippo, who was no longer the little kitsune she practically raised, he was older, and almost taller than she was. Just a few more months, maybe, and he would be.
Kagome heard the sound of scurrying legs, looking at the ground, Kilala came running up to her. She smiled and sank down to her knees as the kitten jumped into her arms, easily recognizing her friend and nuzzling her head under the miko's chin. In which, Kagome had no problem petting.
“Thank you, Kilala.” She whispered into the neko's ear. Knowing perfectly well that she won't understand now, but will soon enough.
Kagome stood, with Kilala in her arms and walked out of the forest and into the moon light.
