Chapter Two
Kagome took two steps before she realized that she wasn’t in the forest any longer with her companions. The night was still warm and smelled of summer grasses and flowers releasing their sweet nectar into the air, yet something was different…a distant car horn drove home just what was amiss.
She turned her head towards a twinkling glow that caught her eye. A light in the kitchen window of her house jolted her. How in the…?
“ I’m home…?” she whispered to herself, baffled. She hadn’t gone through the bone-eaters well, still, here she was, standing in the open courtyard of her family’s shrine.
She’d been about to run from that bizarre blue light that was on the verge of exploding out from Naraku, now she was here…?
“ How’d I get home?” she asked, this time a bit louder. A small sliver of dread was beginning to take root in her belly.
“ Home? This place?” A smooth voice said from behind her. Kagome almost blacked out from spinning so quick. She could have placed that calm, calculating voice anywhere.
“ Sesshomaru?” she gasped.
Lord Sesshomaru was looking about, taking in the odd surroundings with an air of complete indifference. For a youkai who now found himself thrown into such a strange circumstance, Kagome thought he was awfully reserved. Then again, there was hardly a time that she could remember Inuyasha’s full blooded youkai brother not being in control.
“ How did you…?” she began. Sesshomaru didn’t even grace her with a look.
“ This place has a foul stench.” He cut across her, his nose tilted upwards.
Kagome scowled. She really didn’t fancy the idea of being the one to have to inform Sesshomaru, Lord of the Western Lands, that he was now centuries away from his home.
“ This is my home, “ she said weakly.
He finally brought his head around to look down at the little miko who tagged along after his dimwitted hanyou brother.
“ How did we get here?” his calm voice held a hint of ice.
Kagome swallowed hard. “I…I don’t know…I usually go through the well…”
He cocked an eyebrow at her as she continued. “…you see, I live in the year 1997, Sesshomaru…”
She noticed his golden eyes widen slightly in surprise at this amazing bit of information. Yet, he recovered beautifully, as if being catapulted five hundred years into the future was a common occurrence for him.
“ No wonder you dress so odd…” he merely surmised.
Turning his back on her, Kagome realized that he still had Tokijin clasped in his clawed hand. He slid it smoothly back into its sheath.
“ Where’s the well?” he asked, glancing at her from over his shoulder.
Kagome lifted her eyes from the restrained demon sword to his. She pointed towards the rude, wooden building a short ways from them.
“ It’s inside there…” she told him.
Sesshomaru began walking towards the building. Kagome paused briefly, watching him. He didn’t quicken his pace or appear at all urgent to return to the Feudal Era, but Kagome sensed that he didn’t want to be here any longer than could be helped. Surely a powerful youkai like Sesshomaru wouldn’t fear being so far in the future, why would he be so silently resigned on returning to the past?
She followed him, that seed of dread now beginning to blossom, spreading out like icy cold tendrils, embedding into her. A flickering, ghastly thought tried to touch her mind. She buried it into the recesses of her psyche.
Sesshomaru threw open the door, glanced at her to make sure she was behind him. He stood aside and let her pass him into the shrine first. Kagome didn’t think it had anything to do with being gentlemanly.
Down the steps, they now stood at the wood encased well. Kagome gulped, fearful expectancy licked at her innards.
“ Well?”
Her eyes darted to Sesshomaru’s face. “ I usually jump…”
His face set, no emotion touched it, though Kagome saw rising irritability.
“ Then jump. I’ll follow…” he told her.
“ It’s not that easy, Sessh…”
His movements weren’t visible to her mere mortal eyes. He clutched her wrist and wrenched her to him. She felt a catch in her throat as he leapt into the well with one swift bound.
Kagome shut her eyes against it. She didn’t want to know…didn’t want to allow the truth in; the truth that was breeding inside her, trying to break free and awaken her to it.
They landed with a thud in the earth at the bottom of the well. Sesshomaru released her with a curt shove. Lifting his sensitive nose, he inhaled deeply. That same foul odor filled his senses, they hadn’t gone anywhere. He turned furious golden orbs onto the miko, who had fallen to the ground from his push.
“ We’re still here.” he said harshly.
Kagome swallowed down the dry knot that had formed in her throat. Her voice was shaky when she spoke.
“ I know. We…we can’t get back…”
Authors Note: Sorry, I forgot to add this at the end of the first chapter. I don't know how angsty this story will get, but I put it under, just in case. Also, I don't own any of the characters of Inuyasha, I just get the opportunity to play with them! Please read and enjoy and all constructive reviews are welcome!
