Chapter Three

“This is most troublesome indeed,” Kaede was saying as she rubbed at her gnarled chin. Her deep carved wrinkles were etched even further as, with furrowed brow, the old miko's mind turned over the events of the evening that Inuyasha, Miroku and Sango had shared with her.

Inuyasha paced her hut impatiently, while Miroku, rubbing his smooth clear right palm, and Sango sat cross-legged before the wise woman. Kirara, now in kitten form, was curled up, exhausted, in Sango's lap. Shippo was perched atop Miroku's shoulder. All eyes were trained to Kaede, except for Inuyasha's. The hanyou couldn't keep any part of himself still, even his heart was thrashing around inside his chest.

“Explain again about the blue light…” Kaede stated.

Inuyasha rounded on her. “Are you kidding me?! Dammit, we're wasting time! Kagome could be lying hurt somewhere…”

Kaede fixed him with a firm, steady stare. “Inuyasha, I cannot fully help Kagome if I don't have exact details.”

Inuyasha glared daggers at her. In return, she didn't lower her set eyes from the agitated hanyou. She could read him so well. The self torment from not having been able to save Kagome, his internal terror at never being able to find her…it was written like a book across his face.

“After Sesshomaru and Inuyasha struck Naraku, Kagome's arrow pierced the Shikon no Tama.” Sango explained.

Kaede, finally tearing her gaze from Inuyasha, who once again began pacing the room, turned to the demon slayer.

“Did her arrow purify before or after the powers of Tokijin and Tetsusiga caught Naraku?”

Sango and Miroku darted quick glances at one another.

“Actually, Lady Kaede,” Miroku began. “I think the sacred arrow purified at the same moment.”

Kaede's lined face now looked like a map of a deep gorged canyon. Could it be? She'd heard of such things happening, but never in her lifetime…

“And the bone-eaters well?”

“I already told you, hag! I couldn't get through!” Inuyasha snarled.

Kaede, choosing to ignore Inuyasha's insult, nodded.

“I see…so it's true.”

“What's true, Lady Kaede?” Miroku pushed. Inuyasha's irritation was growing by the second. The monk knew they needed to start pushing for some answers. That or let Inuyasha start converting Kaede's hut into a pile of kindling.

Kaede sighed slightly, poking at the glowing embers of the dying fire that lit the room. Miroku heard Inuyasha growl in aggravation.

“Well, I've heard of a strange phenomenon occurring when a huge force of power is released…” she explained.

Inuyasha halted his pacing; all four were now gripping to every word the ancient miko spoke.

She continued. “…when this tremendous amount of energy is let loose, anything within the path of the source is effected by a movement in time.”

She glanced briefly at the attentive faces all tuned to her.

“Again, anything around the source is either made young or aged. Trees can become seeds or wither and die depending on the type of shift in time.”

Inuyasha's voice was low and frighteningly serious, only above a whisper.

“What are you saying?”

Kaede sighed deeply once more.

“When Kagome purified the jewel, her spiritual energy joined with Naraku's power and that of both swords…she created this change in time.”

When no one spoke, she went on.

“Sesshomaru was obviously too close to Kagome and was swallowed at the same moment. None of you were affected because the energy followed the course the arrow took, from Kagome.”

“I don't give a damn about all that! How do we get her back?!” Inuyasha suddenly shouted, hovering over her.

Kaede, poking at the embers again, was silent several long, almost eternal, moments.

“There is a way…”she began.

The monk, demon slayer, kitsune and hanyou, were all on edge, waiting for her to continue. The old miko didn't lift her eyes, but kept staring into the ever shifting red glow of the fire. Her voice was quiet as she went on.

“…there is a shrine at the furthest southern shore of the land that houses an energy that may be great enough to reopen the doorway to Kagome's time.”

Inuyasha gripped Tetsusiga's handle, ready to bound out of the hut.

“Keh! Let's get going!” he said urgently.

“No, Inuyasha. You'll need help. An ancient incantation needs to be spoken to invoke the power of the shrine, an incantation known only by the most powerful monks and priestesses. Only then can you cross over and ask Kagome to return.”

Inuyasha felt a clenching in his lower belly and a fluttering in his heart.

Sango cocked and eyebrow. “What do you mean `ask', Lady Kaede?”

“With the Shikon no Tama destroyed, there is nothing to tie Kagome to our time any longer. She'd never be able to get home should she choose to return here.”

The implication of this was obvious to all in the room. Kaede lifted her eyes to Inuyasha's. She could see the dueling emotions warring behind his golden eyes.

“You must decide, Inuyasha. You have to open the doorway, bring Sesshomaru back. Ask her then, if that is what you desire, yet she is home and she may select to remain there.”

Shippo felt a tear slip from his emerald eyes. Miroku and Sango exchanged sorrowful glances. Inuyasha's mind battled the options before him. Of course Kagome would want to stay in her time; that was where she belonged. Could he even ask her to return here, to him? Would it be selfish to expect her to want to?

He inhaled deeply, trying to emit the appearance of self control and sure fire decisiveness.

“How can I find Kikyo?” he asked stiffly.

Kaede nodded, understanding the hanyou's intent. “The last I heard, she was in a village north of here.”
