Chapter Eight
Kagome blew years worth of dust off the ancient book grandfather had found out in the old shrine, stored away with boxes of old artifacts. She'd gone to him, begging information of any kind on magical items that may have a spiritual force strong enough to move time.
Sending out a silent prayer, she actually blessed her odd little grandfather for harboring so much knowledge about the past and the shrine. Knowledge for so long, she thought utterly useless.
Flipping open the book, her eyes raced, scanning the pages. Sesshomaru stood, looking over her shoulder. Hopefully the miko was correct in her assumption that the prayer beads draped around his brother's neck still held the powerful spell she'd placed upon him.
He, however, was doubtful. If she failed in her attempt, he'd set out on his own to find the gem…
Sesshomaru was familiar with its power, its ability. He hadn't become the Lord of the Western Lands without acquiring a plethora of the countries spiritual and mystical secrets. He eyed the back of Kagome's head; besides he did have a sacrifice if need be.
Sesshomaru never exerted his energy on needless killing, but it had been a day and a half since the anomaly that had so forcefully threw him five hundred years into the future. He was beginning to feel desperate. His urgency to return to Rin was causing bizarre emotions that he just wasn't used to, his coolness was slipping away.
Wafting from the book was the smell of decay as Kagome continued searching its pages. Small pictures of different magical and spiritual trinkets or objects were sketched on the pages.
“Anything, miko?” Sesshomaru growled his question. Kagome couldn't miss the annoyance in his voice. He wasn't attempting to hide his growing irritation any longer; his typically calm façade was dissolving. This was seriously unnerving her…
He was deadly, her safety not a concern of his as it was with Inuyasha. She was beginning to suspect why he was so discontent.
Gulping, she said, “No, not yet.”
He brought a clawed hand down hard on her desk, causing her to nearly leap out of her skin.
“I suggest you find what you're looking for quickly.” He once again growled.
Kagome's eyes, wide with fear and loathing at being spoken to so roughly, bit her tongue and began reading more frantically. Why in the world was he taking his frustration out on her? She was trying to desperately search for a way back!
“jar of life…' Oh! Only used by Shinigami…ugh… `kimono of beauty' no, it's granted only by offers of sacrifice…” she muttered.
Sacrifice? Did they really do that? Human sacrifice? She shivered at that tidbit of information.
On the following page was a picture of prayer beads similar to Inuyasha's. Kagome read the incantation next to it… `Beads of Submission'…Unto the wearer, who possesses no control; that definitely described Inuyasha…
Dammit! Was there nothing? She sensed Sesshomaru pacing like a caged beast behind her. This had to feel like imprisonment to the independent, stoic youkai.
His mind was racing, he could just throw her over his shoulder and force her to come with him when he went to search for the…
“Aha!” she exclaimed, rooting him mid pace.
“What?”
Her nose was nearly touching the page.
“…any items with spell bestowed may be summoned from any time…chanting the mantra thrice…spirit of infinite life, return to me my mystical entity…I was the one who put the sit command on him, I say it three times and he should be able to reach us…”
She read further down the page, frowning. “It has to be preformed at the exact spot where the spell was induced.”
Sesshomaru arched a skeptical eyebrow.
“Are you joking?”
Kagome shook her head. “No, but I put the command on him near the go-shinboku.”
Her chair teetered slightly as she shot up from her desk, tucking the book under her arm.
“Miko,” Sesshomaru said, stopping her before she dashed from her room. “If this doesn't work, I will take the situation into my own hands. Do you understand?”
Kagome swallowed a knot of fear down her dry throat at this threat. His whole demeanor was deathly somber. Just what did he mean by that? Why did it cause the hairs on the back of her neck to rise to attention?
The next second, she felt her chin clutched between his thumb and forefinger. His golden eyes were boring into her deep dark ones. His facial markings were suddenly vibrant before her wide eyes.
“I will find a way back to my time, regardless of who's harmed in the process.” His lip lifted into a menacing snarl.
A far away look suddenly passed over his face. “…she's worth any forfeited life…”
Kagome felt a violent shudder shake her. She had been right; it was the little girl…
He didn't seem to recognize that he'd let his mind lapse as he refocused on her face. He let go of her chin, pointing out the door.
“Lead on…”
Kagome spun, her heart thumping loudly up into her ears. She had faced many lethal youkai alongside Inuyasha before, she now found herself choosing to stare them down again then spend anymore time with Sesshomaru than was necessary.
Sesshomaru followed her out of the house and back into the courtyard. He'd give her this chance; then, when she failed miserably…he'd have his…
