Chapter Seven

`Kagome, are you okay?' pondered the silver-haired hanyou, as he lounged on a branch in a nearby tree overlooking his hodgepodge traveling group and their makeshift camp.

A thundering in his chest was threatening to escape in the form of a growl as he thought of Sesshomaru, stuck with Kagome in the future. Sesshomaru may look as if he'd softened, now that he had taken on the responsibility of having a human companion, that didn't mean he trusted his brother.

Sesshomaru was lethal, his impatience and intolerance could only be restrained for so long, what would happen to Kagome then?

`Kagome, I'm sorry,' he groaned inwardly. He hadn't been able to get to her in time, had failed as her protector. Cement blocks of guilt sat in the pit of his stomach.

He could apologize once the barrier was reopened; ask her forgiveness…even if he knew that he didn't deserve it. He wasn't worthy of it, especially now, with Kikyo around, arousing that sleeping beast of want.

He opened a half-slit eye, looking in her direction. She was lying propped against an old, root bound tree. Her soul collectors had rejoined her and were snaking their way through the air, dropping white orbs of light into her lifeless, clay body.

Sliding his eye shut again, he swallowed down a dry lump trying to escape his throat. He couldn't help thinking back to that day; that beautiful day he'd offered to become fully human for her. He'd loved her, felt more for her than anything he had ever known before…until now.

Now, merely thinking of not bringing Kagome back to the Feudal Era, well, it was unfathomable. She'd become a vital part of his life; swallowing down the knot again, he realized he loved her. Differently than he'd loved Kikyo, but fiercely all the same…

It wasn't enough to love her though; he knew she wouldn't want to spend her days here, would she? She'd never be able to return to her family, it wasn't an option that she'd even consider.

He slit his eye again to look at the dead miko, illuminated by white souls. Was it wrong to even think of rekindling something with her, knowing Kagome was sure to remain in her own time? Yeah, he knew it was, his stomach writhed for even considering it, yet there it was all the same…

Damn! Why were women so troubling, so confusing?

Rustling of robes in the campsite caused his fuzzy ears to perk. A black shadowed figure was disappearing into the brush. Without even thinking, the bold hanyou leapt after whoever was sneaking about.

Atop the trees, Inuyasha saw the squat figure of Jaken, staff of two-heads clutched firmly in his hands. Glancing over his shoulders, Inuyasha realized his brother's henchman did not want to be seen.

Arching a curious eyebrow, Inuyasha decided to silently follow him, see what he was up to. Effortlessly, he jumped along the branches above the little green youkai.

Silvery and full, the moon was illuminating a large glade a ways into the forest, where Jaken finally stopped. With another quick, nervous glance about himself, Jaken raised the staff high over his head, bringing it down with a hard thrust into the thick, mossy ground.

Inuyasha hit the ground without a sound, hiding himself behind a shrub. What the hell was the miserable cretin up to?

“Spirit…of Sky and Heavenly Bodies hear me…” Jakens high pitched voice called out. He didn't appear to Inuyasha to be enjoying his task. His brow was beaded with sweat, his voice broken.

Inuyasha started slightly when the staff head resembling an old man, began speaking.

“On the eve of the full moon, why am I summoned by youkai blood? What is it you wish of me?” The voice coming from the head was deep, unearthly.

An unwanted shiver ran its course through the usually over confident hanyou.

“M..milord,” Jaken stuttered, “ I've come to request the Amulet of Ages…”

“The Amulet of Ages in not to be used by the hands of human or youkai. Only the spirits possess the ability to use it…” the head informed a shivering Jaken.

“Please, milord, I was told y…you could help me…” Jaken squeaked.

The staff was quiet for a heavy, seemingly infinite, moment.

“This Spirit of Sky and Heavenly Bodies has given the use of the Amulet before, but only in exchange…What do you have to exchange?” there was almost a covetous sound to the staff heads voice.

Jaken was visibly shuddering head to toe, his eyes bulging more than usual.

“A..a life…for the Amulet,” he said, barely loud enough for Inuyasha's disbelieving ears to pick up.

The head began to laugh in its supernatural, hollow sound.

“Of course, a life would never be refused for the use of the Amulet, clever youkai; or whoever has sent you to me. I accept your offer.”

The mouth of the head opened, a bright stream of light cut through the silvery night like an arrow.

“Follow the path of the beam, there you'll find what you seek.” the head said before closing its mouth, becoming nothing more than a staff once again.

Gripping the wood tightly, Jaken wrenched the staff up out of the ground. He had an edgy grin on his face. What good fortune was upon him to find such a say to return his Lord Sesshomaru to him!

A tightening around his neck made him gag; his feet suddenly departed the springy earth. Being swung around, he locked eyes with a blazing pair of golden ones.

Inuyasha's brow was furrowed in evident anger. He held Jaken by the scruff of his neck.

“And just who's life are you bargaining with for this little trinket, eh, lowlife?” the hanyou snarled into the terrified youkai's face.

An echoing voice rang in Jaken's ears. She had told him that Sesshomaru's brother mustn't know of this that if he caught wind of what was going on that Jaken must misdirect him.

“Not that it's any business of yours, you hanyou filth, but I'm giving my own life! Nothing is too great a sacrifice for my Lord Sesshomaru!”

This was clearly the truth to some degree; Jaken would go to his grave before letting that scum brother of his lord know anything about Jaken's intentions of retrieving his master.

Besides, the miko had her own reasons for deceiving her former lover…
