Chapter Six

The sun was lowering into the west, once again dark purples and deep pinks were painting the light blue sky. In the distance, several stars were breaking through the blackening horizon.

Now, settling upon an overturned, moss covered tree trunk, Miroku sat beside Sango. Looking down a gently sloping hill, a small creek was wavering, colored by the darkening sky.

Even the glorious view wasn't quite enough to lighten the heavy hearts of the couple, whose fingers were intertwined, outer thighs pressed together as they sat close.

Sango let out a breathy sigh. Miroku knew his anxiety matched that of the beautiful woman beside him. The weight of the situation spoke volumes, though their lips said nothing.

“It's beautiful.” he whispered, trying to make light conversation.

Sango nodded, taking in the scene. “Hai.”

They sat, aside from the twittering birds, in the heavy silence.

“Miroku…?” Sango tentatively began.

“Hai?”

“Do you think…?”

“No, I don't think she will.” Miroku finished softly, but firmly, giving her hand a gentle squeeze.

Sango looked into his dark eyes; a sad smile touched his lips. She hung her head, looking defeated.

“It's not right for Inuyasha to even ask her, is it?” she asked sadly.

Miroku shook his head. “No, probably not.”

Both knew Kagome belonged in her own time. It was a stone cold fact. Kaede had not sounded overly optimistic about her returning, had even given them a departing warning; don't get your hopes up.

Their small troop was disbanding, in their hearts and minds they knew that it would've eventually come to this; it still didn't make it easy or pleasant. It wasn't as if a village or miles separated them from their friend…it was centuries.

Movement below them drew their attention down towards the creek that was now turning steel gray in the fading light. Kikyo, staff in hand, was walking along the pebbled shore, looking about her cautiously. She seemed a bit on edge, a bizarre behavior for the typically refined, hollow miko.

Darting inquisitive glances at one another, Miroku and Sango slid off the top of the tree trunk, hunching behind it. They couldn't have said why they did this, but something about the miko's manner was odd. They'd never seen her act so…shifty.

Another movement a ways along the creek brought the small dark figure of Jaken, joining her at the water's edge.

Straining their ears, they tried to catch what was being said between Sesshomaru's henchman and the long departed miko.

“…help me…Lord Sesshomaru…” Kikyo's voice floated up the hill towards them.

Jaken's voice began with an affronted squeal.

“What! How dare you…!”

Kikyo hushed him quickly.

“…amulet of ages…for me…”

The rest of the conversation only reached their ears in whispers and couldn't be made out. The crickets were chirping melodiously, more stars were twinkling above as the pair meeting below the hidden monk and demon slayer, departed.

Still squatting behind their tree trunk, Miroku exchanged a puzzled glance with Sango. What kind of help could Kikyo possibly need from Jaken?

A matching uneasy sensation gripped at the couples insides. Something wasn't right with the whole scenario they had just witnessed.

“Should we tell Inuyasha?” Sango asked her monk, staring into his dark, baffled eyes.

Miroku, chin clasped between two fingers, was perplexed. Whatever Kikyo and Jaken had met about was mysterious, yet they needed Kikyo's help to open the time portal and retrieve Sesshomaru. Herein lay their problem. Throwing an air of suspicion over Kikyo wouldn't help with the predicament they were in.

Besides, Miroku knew Inuyasha only too well…the hanyou heralded a blinded soft spot wherever Kikyo was concerned.

“No,” he finally said, “but let us keep a wary eye on them…just in case.”

Sango nodded her agreement before the two slipped from behind their hiding spot and wandered back to the makeshift camp, hands once again entangled together.
